There are plenty of vultures in Africa.

This African animal will feed on dead animal carcasses which are often rotting in the hot African sun.

They are well equipped for this type of meal.

They have very strong acids in their digestive system which kills dangerous bacteria in their meal.

China is the world’s largest consumer of ivory.

Elephants are poached for their ivory, which is carved into jewelry, utensils, religious figurines, and trinkets.

Approximately 70% of illegal ivory ends up in China.

In the 1900s, there were about 12 million elephants south of the Sahara. Today, there are about 500,000.

Conservationists estimate that between 30,000 and 38,000 elephants are poached annually for their ivory.

A single male elephant's two tusks can weigh more than 250 pounds, with a pound of ivory fetching as much as $1,500 on the black market.

Kenya reports that 90% of ivory smugglers caught in the country are Chinese citizens.

At the current poaching rates, elephants, rhinos, and other iconic African wildlife will be gone within our lifetime.

Since 1960, the black rhino population has decreased by 97.6% due to poaching.

Most poaching is done by organized crime syndicates who use high-powered technology and weaponry to hunt and kill animals without being detected.

Poachers often prefer using poisoned arrows because there is not a telltale gunshot sound.

A well-placed arrow can kill in 20 minutes; however, a misplaced arrow can leave the animal dying a lingering death form infection for up to a month.

In 2014, 1,215 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa, that is one rhino killed every 8 hours.

The most expensive items in the world are diamonds, gold, platinum, and rhino horn.

With rhino horn topping the list, Rhino horn can sell for nearly $30,000 a pound.

Gold, by comparison, is worth about $22,000 a pound.

At the current poaching rates, elephants, rhinos, and other iconic African wildlife will be gone within our lifetime.

Tigers are being poached to extinction.

Their claws, teeth, and whiskers are believed to provide good luck and protective powers.

Their skins and bones are valued as status symbols.

Poachers and criminal networks are drawn to tigers because parts from a single tiger can bring them as much as $50,000 on the black market.

There are 23 species of crocodiles and most of them are endangered because of poaching.

Crocodile's skin is highly appreciated in fashion industry and represents a status symbol for wealthy people.

Crocodiles live on the Earth 240 million years.

They appeared at the same time when dinosaurs appeared.

Crocodiles vary in size.

Largest crocodile species is Saltwater Crocodile which can reach 13-18 feet in length and weigh up to 2200 - 2200 lb.

The saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), is the largest of all living reptiles, as well as the largest riparian predator in the world.

Smallest crocodile species is Dwarf Crocodile which can reach 5 feet in length and weigh up to 40-70 pounds.

Crocodiles are meat-eaters (carnivores).

They have 24 sharp teeth which are used for killing of fish, birds, mammals and small crocodile (their prey).

Crocodiles don't chew their food.

They tear apart flesh and swallow large chunks of meat.

They sometimes swallow stones to ensure faster grinding of the food in their stomach.

Expression "cry crocodile tears" is based on the true fact crocodiles produce tears when they eat.

They don't cry because they feel sorry for the prey, but because they swallow too much air, which gets in touch with lachrymal glands (glands that produce tears) and forces tears to flow.

They have one of the strongest bites in the animal world.

Muscles which induce closing of the jaw are much stronger than muscles which open the jaw.

Because of that, people can use their bare hands to keep their mouth closed.

Crocodiles can be often seen with their jaws wide open.

They open their jaws to cool themselves because they don't have sweat glands.

Only crocodile's belly has a gentle skin. Skin on their back contains bony structures (called osteoderms).

Crocodiles have excellent eyesight (especially during the night).

Their eyes can be seen as red dots while peeking from the water during the night.

Crocodiles and alligators are not the same.

Crocodiles are larger, have V-shaped jaw and some of their teeth can be seen even when the jaw is fully closed.

Alligators are smaller, they have U-shaped jaw and their teeth are not visible when jaws are closed.

99% of crocodile babies will be eaten in the first year of their life by large fish, hyenas, monitor lizards and larger crocodiles.

Most crocodiles live 50-60 years in the wild. Some crocodiles can live more than 80 years.

The Amazon is the world's biggest rainforest, larger than the next two largest rainforests in the Congo Basin and Indonesia combined.

At 6.9 million square kilometers (2.72 million square miles), the Amazon Basin is roughly the size of the forty-eight contiguous United States and covers some 40 percent of the South American continent.

The "Amazon rainforest" which defined biogeographically includes the rainforest in the Guianas, which technically are outside the Amazon Basin covers 7.8 to 8.2 million sq km (3 to 3.2 million sq mi), of which just over 80 percent is forested.

Nearly two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest is found in Brazil.

Re: Let's Talk About Animals On Our Planet(Photos). by Explorers(op):
The Amazon River is by far the world's largest river by volume.

It has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are longer than 1000 miles.

The Amazon River once flowed west-ward instead of east-ward as it does today.

The rise of the Andes caused it to flow into the Atlantic Ocean.

It pour on average about 60milion gallons of fresh water into the ocean per seconds.

This massive influx of fresh water actually dilutes the ocean's salinity.

The Amazon is home to more species of plants and animals than any other terrestrial ecosystem on the planet perhaps 30 percent of the world's species are found there.

Its biodiversity the term used to describe biological richness is astounding: a single bush in the Amazon may have more species of ants than the entire British Isles, while a lone hectare of forest (two-and-a-half acres) may have more than 500 species of trees and a single park can have more than 1,400 butterfly species.

The Amazon is estimated to have 16,000 tree species and 390 billion individual trees.
