I just got 50 broilers, 50 cockrels and 5 turkey poults from Foltem, a fellow nairalander. Everything arrived safely. Since other people share their experience here, let me too do same.

Gave them glucose, milk and multivitamins today to combat stress.

what type or strain are they?

I don't think they need milk or is it a new innovation? Please why did you administer milk?

Not all of them will eat quickly and I can't force them to eat. What I usually do is to dip their beaks in their water as I take them out of their shipping box and soon as they swallow they know how to drink. The milk acts as nourishment till they are able to eat. Within 30 minutes yesterday they were all active and drinking by themselves despite the journey from Ibadan to Lagos.

Checked them this morning. All doing great. No mortality. Gave them tetracycline. I don't want to start with antibiotics that might be too strong for them. I am trying to keep cost as low as possible so suggestions will be appreciated.

What a nice project! I wish you optimum profit!
I plan to venture into birds keeping soon. I want to ask the following questions:
1. How much did u get a pack of broilers?
2. I can see u used papers on ur floor, why? Is it better dan saw dust or sac/nylon sheets?
3. Wats d administration/dosage of tetracycline u used?
Re: My New Broiler Project by ifebrainy5: 11:18pm On Mar 17, 2017

Who taught you this dangerous method if i may ask?

Well it is just 100 birds, you wont feel too bad if they come up with their problems as a result of your action.

Asides the fact that it is meant for humans, you dont apply tetracycline to prevent but to cure a baterial infection where a strong resistance to normal antibiotics is observed.

like a said, you've nothing to worry about as your birds are just 100.

newly hatched chicks can survive for close to 72 hours without feed. To me the milk is not needed now unless you want to vaccinate and for the tetracycline, its an antibiotic just that it's meant for human which may even be stronger

Noted. Thanks. That's why I started this thread. So which broad spectrum antibiotics do you suggest?

I'm sorry if that was not cool.

I forgot he will need almost 100k or more (which is not small amount in this present Nigeria) to raise them to maturity.

Sorry once again!

This is the 8th day and so far no mortality. smiley
I have never had it so good.
Days 2 and 3, I gave them FURAMIX because I could not get FURAFULCAMIN to buy. (Furaltadone is used to prevent many infections)
Days 4 and 5, I gave them only multivitamins. I use VITAFLASH.
Days 6 and 7, I gave them Tylodox (this prevents coryza)
I will give them Multivitamins till day 9 and if I am satisfied, I will give them Gumboro vaccine on day 10.

Re: My New Broiler Project by frisky2good(m): 1:31pm On Mar 25, 2017
There is one minor thing that causes deaths in chicks. I am not a vet so I don't know the name or what causes it. If you notice poo sticking to your chick's rear, you need to check well to be sure their anus is not blocked. If it is blocked, the chicks affected will be unable to pass out poo which might lead to death. Take affected chicks, dip your hand in water and use the water to soak the stuck poo. Soon as it is soft, gently pull the poo off till you can see the anus. Separate the cleaned chicks and provide a lantern to help dry them up quickly.

Re: My New Broiler Project by frisky2good(m): 5:28pm On Mar 30, 2017
I stopped providing heat for them on day 10.
Day 13: Gave them gumboro today. Still no mortality which is quite surprising to be honest but I thank God for that.
I changed from paper on the floor to wood shavings today.
I will give them multivitamins tomorrow (day 14) and then procox for 3 days (Day 15 - 17)

Re: My New Broiler Project by frisky2good(m): 9:27pm On Mar 30, 2017
Sorry but don't understand how I missed this.

1. Price of broilers change rapidly. The week before I got this set it was 130 per chick. By the time I wanted to book it was 150 per chick. The next week it was 140 per chick. Broilers are usually more expensive 3 months before any major festival like Easter and Christmas. I got this set from folteminvestments and I am quite impressed so far.
2. Chicks peck at anything by instinct and they will eat anything that can enter their mouth in the first days of their lives. Sand, sawdust inclusive. Using paper eliminates that risk.
3. I put 5 capsules in 2 litres of water.

1. it's for personal consumption.
2. It is not your business and not your money being spent.
3. You don't know if I am taking any steps to do anything about the sizes if I feel concerned.
4. What use are big dead birds if mortality is not an issue.
5. Why not show me your own big birds so I can know how big they should be?
6. Learn to offer solutions along with criticism especially if noone asked for your opinion.
