I hope they sue the school for this. No one should be forced to attend any religious function. It doesn't matter what the student agreed to when entering the school. It's against the constitution.

There is something illogical about your argument...
Re: Covenant University Suspends Final Year Students For Missing Easter Programme by himee: 5:09pm On Apr 25, 2017
There was no rule that said students MUST attend Easter-Youth Alive function. There was no signed agreement to this effect either at the beginning of the school year. Also, this notice went out to parents from a strange personal number and not the school's usual CUSTOMIZED number... No one is saying the students who defaulted are right but there are several other punishments that can be meted out to the students rather than a full year suspension! Redeemer's University sends students to Bible school for 3 months when they default- they don't make such rash decisions, especially not when final year students are involved...

This should be looked into because such grave punishment for this "Minor offence" will not make the school or the students better tomorrow...

It's just dis-heartening!

Covenant University is as it again and this time I am not keeping calm!

Please how can a school suspend final year students for not attending "Easter Youth Alive" program" for ONE year Where is that done? Is it on their curriculum? How many units does this program carry?

These students have barley two(2) or three (3) months to go before project defense and graduation, have exams coming up this week and the school wakes up and decides to suspend them for one (1) year? And what happens to the fees paid for the year? In this economic recession, parents should cough out close to a Million Naira again to pay fees

How many "churchy" schools have ever done this? None! Its only Covenant University! Is there no better punishment to give to these students than suspension for a WHOLE YEAR What culture are you trying to imbibe into these students? When they are suspended, will they go home and become better people? What are the lecturers and counselors in the school for? What are the various Bible studies or programs in the school for? Are they organized for just believers? Who did the church come for? Who did Jesus come for? Isn't it the sinners? What if after every sin we commit, our Almighty Father in Heaven decides to suspend us from this earth, where will we all be?

I should believe parents who take their children to such schools do so not just for academic purposes, but also for the spiritual aspect. Isn't that why they have a course titled "The Total Man?" Or what other reason is this course for, if not to build all students, particularly the erring ones to become better people? If not so, they should please enlighten us.

I think this time around, Covenant University has gone over board!

We will not keep silent again.

Please and please, we would appreciate if this is published. We have had enough of this!
we need facts becos pple just post anything nowadays .....who are these student, are there pictures to back up wat u re saying?

There is something illogical about your argument...

Of course. It's illogical that NUC (or whatever institution is in charge) grants licenses to religious schools with unconstitutional rules in their code of conduct.

Fat lie from d pit of hell. Many people jump into conclusion without asking basic questions.
Youth Alive Conf. is a church program not a university curriculum.
There is no special register book for CU students during the conference.
Easter is christain holiday and every student is entitled to go for a holiday
Youth Alive Conferences is not even compulsory for members of Winners Church

So Mr rumours monger, stop fabricating lies to paint the school bad.

OK, I see your point.

I don't pretend to be a lawyer, but I don't think freedom of choice in religious matters is against the state/society.

(Isn't it supposed to be a fundamental human right?)

As long as the organization's rules are not inimical to the state, nothing stops the NUC from giving them a license.

From the facts available, the student was not forced to enrol in this institution.

And enrollment presupposes that he will abide by the rules and regulations of the said institution.

So why flout their directives?

Was this in your agreement?

Hearing so many similar stories about this same institution makes one assume that there could be some kind of binding agreement parents sign whenever they enrol their wards.

If that is so, such agreements would have to be respected.

If it stipulates that students should carry around pocket bibles and submit themselves for pregnancy tests before exams...

Well, as they say in the streets, "Agreement is Agreement"

Truth is that, even if these things weren't in the agreement, you can never sue the school and win the case. Firstly, by suing the school, millions of sheeple would twist the case and interpret it as 'you fighting God and Christianity.' You will basically be fighting against millions of gullible sheep, and such fights hardly ever ends in victory.

What is your own problem. Every Student of that school must have signed a contract to obey every rule of the school and attend all compulsory programs of the school irrespective of the student's religion. You are getting angry that someone is being punished for breaking a rule he obviously knew about. what do fees and obeying the set laws have to do together People like you will not allow Nigeria be great. Every student signs an undertaken to follow the laws of the school irrespective of your religion. If you are not okay with the undertaken then you don't attend the school. there are many other schools around. your religion probably has one and so does your government.

There's no reason to get worked up; I always want to learn more.

Which particular section of the constitution stipulates that private organizations cannot draw up their own agenda (as long as they are not criminal in nature)?

It's not a case to get unduly sentimental about.

Goodness gracious! I give up.

Hint: You should at least know your fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution. The school is forcing students to attend a religious function. If that isn't infringement of the rights to religious association, I don't know what it is.

People that chose the school must live with their choice!

This is why our rankings with universities in the world is undescribeably poor. Misplaced priorities, A U.S university professor of biology is somewhere in the thick forest studying perhaps an evolutionary toad to make concise textbooks and findings about that toad and my dear CU Is busy sanctioning their students for not attending a church program in the school. Big ups to graduates of public universities where you are allowed to fully explore your right to choice.

Don't blame the school... During admission, the people always ask "Will you be able to cope with our strict conditions concerning religion??". And students always answer yes. So who is to blame? It all boils down to choice, the students happened to pick the wrong option...
