The management of Covenant University has suspended over 200 students of the institution for missing the just concluded Easter ‘Youth Alive’ programme.

Punch reports that the affected students were placed on compulsory suspension for not being part of the retreat.


Meanwhile, some affected students have described as “unjust” the suspension of undergraduates at the institution.

According to them, the rules of their admission did not say it was compulsory for them to attend the programme organised by ‎the faith-based institution.

A 400-level student said that over 200 students were affected by the decision of the university.


He said, “We were going for the services in the morning and night and people were getting tired of it because we were also preparing for exams. So, the Vice- Chancellor got angry and ordered that those who missed the services be sanctioned.

“Some were suspended for four weeks and those who had missed eight services for the four days got a year.”

According to another 300-level student, some of them have been prevented from sitting for exams and they had no means of protesting the sanctions, which he said was ‘unfair.


“The mood in school is really tensed. Though students are not protesting but they are angry because you are preparing for an exam you’re not sure you will sit for, until the paper starts.

Lol, why would they protest? Protest is for un-cultured public school goers. Well, keep calm.....they will someday be pushed to where their patience will say to NO to them.

CU is certainly not a conventional university. If you can graduate from CU without transferring out or getting expelled then you can succeed in any thing you do in life. However this isn't good for the PR of the University. No one is saying they must compromise on the core values but some times you've got to get a human face to legality especially when dealing with youths.

Also, Easter is a public holiday which is backed by either the law or an executive order hence any program within that duration should NEVER be official...

I have three attendance defaults, i don't even know what exam i'm going to miss, i pray it's not a 3 unit course.
Those that are already done with their exams i wonder what the management will do to them. Well i think this is bs and we would be given make up examinations maybe during TTG week, cos otherwise will mean automatic spill over for many final year students.
How can you hold a service for 5 days straight every morning and evening, and exam was scheduled to start on the sixth day. This school get wahala sef.

Well, no compulsory church for us but we have our own issues as well, lol.

I quite agree with you but you should bear it in mind that it's a religious school. That's the more reason most persons are scared to attend there

Well I hope CU would organize a makeup exam for you guys. I really hope they do.

Funny enough I knew an Atheist and an Agnostic while I was in CU. The guys were always ranting lol.
