EGGPLANT CULTIVATION PROCEDURES.

EGG PLANT (Solanum Melongena)
Eggplant also commonly known as garden egg in Nigeria is well adapted to both dry and wet season . "Eggplant" derives its name from the shape of the fruit of some varieties, which are white and shaped similarly to chicken eggs.We have both european and African egg plant with different colors .It is advisable to plant the crop in the wet season especially where water may be a problem. In the dry season liberal or even application of water and heavy mulching of soil surface with grass or manure must be carried out and waterlogged areas must be avoided. Eggplant can tolerate drought and excessive rainfall. There are different varieties of egg plant as obtainable with TECHNISM seed company France. Some of such varieties include; Bello,F1 Djamba,Meketan and F1 Aliona. Most of which variety takes 60 to 65 days to maturity with average weight ranging from between 50gram to 125g depending on variety.

STEPS FOR CULTIVATING EGG PLANT .

1.LAND PREPARATION : Every good farm practice begins with land preparation prior to planting.Land selected for egg plant must be well ploughed to a depth of about 20cm and harrowed to provide a good tilth.Well - rooted organic manure must be added to the soil before planting. The crop could be planted straight in the field or farm or seedlings could be raised in seed beds through broadcast or trays and afterwards transplanted.

2. PLANTING OR SOWING : The minimum temperature for growing egg plant is 22 to 30°c.Well-drained, sandy loamy soils are ideal for eggplant production. Poorly drained soils usually result in reduced functional root area, poor plant growth and low yields.
Eggplant grows best with a soil pH of 5,5 to 6,5. Clay soil should be avoided. Like okra ,eggplant can be down in nurseries and latter transplanted or planted directly in the field. The soil should be well tilled before planting directly. The soil also should be ridged. When using nursery trays u can put two seeds per hole. When using seed bed you broadcast.Directly sown plants are thinned.

3. TRANSPLANTING : Transplanting of seedling is done when the plant shows two true leaves.Plants should be spaced at 90 x 90cm on flat. When ridges are made the spacing should be 50cm between plants and 90cm between ridges.Eggplant is intolerant of poorly drained soil, so it is usually helpful (especially on heavier soils or in low areas).

4. FERTILIZER APPLICATION : The nitrogen (N) requirement for eggplant is approximately 168 to 224 kg/ ha. Preplant fertilisers are usually broadcasted. A proper blend will require 90 to 134 kg/ha each of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) and 22 to 45 kg/ha of N. During the growing season, 2,3 to 4,5 kg of N is applied each week for the period of vegetation growth. At early flowering, 7 to11 kg of N is applied each week. During fruit enlargement, 5 to 7 kg of N is applied each week.

5.WATER NEEDS : Eggplant can be grown with furrow or drip irrigation especially in the dry season. A crop of furrow irrigated eggplant uses approximately 1 850 m3 of water. Some farmers use black plastic mulch and drip tape to control weeds, moisture and soil temperature in plantings. Critical watering periods are at flowering, fruit set and enlargement. The volume of water applied, depends on the time of the year and stage of plant growth. Most of the water and nutrient absorbing roots are in the top 45 cm of the soil. Irrigation should be managed to maintain good soil moisture.

6.POLLINATION : Eggplant are usually self pollinated as its flower contains both male and female parts. The flowers are usually formed on opposite leaves. Flowering is considered day neutral. Eggplant is not well suited for greenhouse production because it will not set fruit in extremely high or low temperatures. Fruit seperation can result if day temperatures exceed 35 °C. If night temperatures drop below 16 °C, pollen deformity increases and less fruit is produced. Flowering and fruit setting begin 6 to 8 weeks after transplanting. Market size fruit is ready approximately 2 to 3 months after planting after flowering depending on the variety planted.

7.WEED CONTROL : Eggplant is slow to become established and cannot compete with aggressive weeds. Weeds also harbour damaging insects and diseases. Weeds are controlled either by physical methods or chemical control Herbicides but not safe . Physical methods, such as hand weeding, getting the manual weeder machine we sell, cultivation and mulching, can be use to control weed. Mulching with black plastic mulch also control weeds and reduces labour needs. Natural organic mulches, such as rice straw or dried grasses , will conserve moisture and add organic matter to the soil.

8. HARVESTING : Harvest of eggplant starts from 65 to 70 days after transplanting depending on variety planted . Fruit is harvested when it reaches market size, and the skin is smooth. Varieties with elongated fruit take more time to ripen. Over mature eggplants loose their gloss or smoothness . Fruit should be removed often to encourage continued fruit set. Regular harvesting of ripe fruit will stimulate further growth and healthy plants can continue to produce fruits for several months. At market maturity, the fruit stem hardens and a sharp knife is needed to cut fruit from plants. Harvesting is done by cutting the stem rather than by pulling the fruit. The fruit is dumped in a water bath for washing and cooling prior to packing. Fruit should be handled and packed carefully to avoid skin abrasions and puncturing. Some types of eggplant have skin that can be damaged easily. Careful harvesting and handling practices should be followed to avoid bruising and compression injuries on the egg plant.

DISEASES ASSOCIATED WITH EGG PLANT.

1. Bacterial wilt : This is a fungal disease caused by the wind and through water. The disease can be controlled by using resistant cultivars or varieties of egg plant for cultivation especially F1 varieties. Alternatively crop rotation, elimination of crop residues are a few measures that can be taken to control this disease. Like is said that prevention is better than cure.

2. Fruit Rot : This disease is caused by the fungus called phytophithora parasite. The organism is mostly spread by the wind.Effective control of the disease can be done by removing affected fruits and spraying with fungicides or organic solutions like Neem extract.

3.Pest : There are different pest that may attack your egg plant such as ; Caterpillars, bugs and flea beetle. This can be controlled by using insecticide such as sevin,Fighter, agritgion or tetrakill Technism product and alternative organic solutions.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN HYBRID SEEDS AND STANDARD VARIETY SEEDS FOR PLANTING.

Gdday all.a short note on fertilizer application.

*TIMING OF FERTILIZER OR MANURE APPLICATIONS A VITAL KEY TO HIGH YIELD*

Timing of fertilizer application has a significant effect on crop yields. Proper timing of the fertilizer application increases yields, reduces nutrient losses, increases nutrient use efficiency and prevents damage to the environment.
Applying fertilizers at the wrong timing might result in nutrient losses, waste of fertilizer and even damage to the crop. The mechanisms by which losses occur depend on the properties of the nutrient and its reactions with the surrounding especially inorganic fertilizers.

TIMING ACCORDING TO CROP PHENOLOGY
Plants need different nutrient ratesand ratios at different growth stages. In order for the nutrients to be available when the plant needs them, fertilizers should be applied at the right timing. The optimum timing for fertilizer application is, therefore, determined by the Nutrient Uptake Pattern of the crop. For the same crop, each nutrient has an individual uptake pattern.

* SPLIT FERTILIZER APPLICATIONS
Different crops have different salt tolerance levels. When salinity level exceeds the salt tolerance of the crop, yield is affected and begins to decrease.
The maximum rate of fertilizer that can be applied at one application depends on the salinity threshold that the crop can tolerate.
Therefore, split fertilizer applications help to avoid salt damages to the crop and improves germination rate. Applying smaller amounts of fertilizers at shorter intervals.
