I think the real question is "would he still have been ambitious if she had accepted his proposal?"

The fact is: if you're not careful, some friends can easily talk you out of your fondest dreams.

Who knows; maybe she would have talked him into accepting a quiet "reasonable" life as a college professor.

We can argue that it took Michelle to fully unleash the potential in Barack.

With his marriage to Michelle, he was able to downplay the fact that he was raised by a white mom and white grandparents. The blacks accepted him and whites saw him as a decent black who is proving to be different from so many other blacks. They also saw he wasn't confused and not forcing himself to be "whitified " like so many blacks do when they attain a certain status in life. They saw him as their own, with a black skin.
