BAE hits milestone with new F-15 electronic warfare system With the completion of a Critical Design Review in February by Boeing, BAE Systems' Eagle Passive/Active Warning Survivability System, or EPAWSS, is one step closer to be deployed on the F-15 Eagle fighter plane. The EPAWSS serves as an upgrades for the Digital Electronic Warfare System, or DEWS, which was released in 2008, and is part of an effort to modernize the F-15 and keep it in service for several more decades, the company announced on Tuesday. "The EPAWSS Critical Design Review is an important step toward providing our F-15 air crew with a world class defensive and jamming system that will bring them home safely," Col. Tim Baily, F-15 program manager for the U.S. Air Force, said in a press release. "Hats off to Boeing and BAE Systems for the impressive work that went into these reviews. Their efforts provide the foundation required to rapidly deliver this capability to the field." The EPAWSS is an advanced electronic warfare suite meant to analyze and jam enemy radars and missiles. In particular, it is meant to help counter enemy jamming and air-defense systems and help detect and counter enemy radar. The system completed its CDR in February, which followed a successful test of the overall warfare suite installed by BAE at the end of 2016. "Our entire team is driven by the importance of providing this enhanced EW technology to our warfighters in a timely manner," said Brian Walters, vice president and general manager of electronic combat solutions at BAE. "EPAWSS provides a critical capability, and it is our mission to provide this capability on or ahead of schedule." |

nemesis2u:Air power. The technological advances in air power I think has seen air dropped munitions taking the roles filled by heavy guns or howitzers. Only those offering smaller fire power compared to available air dropped munitions are currently still widely utilized. 155mm and lower countries utilizing anything above are probably offsetting a serious need for air bombardment. If the effectiveness or the capability in terms of destruction is available in air power then I think it is to avoid having your nuclear arsenal exposed to special forces or or similar forces shadowing your conventional forces. Just adds stress to tactical commanders similar to the president showing up on the battlefield. Command is a stressful thing. The land isn't the ocean. The written S.O.P for moving them around would be composed of 4000 pages. ![]() |

MikeCZA:nice one anyways how about this nukes real life effectiveness lies rarely on the battlefield rather it lies in the minds on the enemies as far as i see it , it will stymie the enemy battle plan and force them to come up with their own solutions which will in turn tie down their meager resources. if ur using NFU doctrine and have made clear that tactical nuke strikes will result in massive strategic level nuke retaliation , it will further put the enemy in a catch 22 situation. should i go to match the artillery nuke capability or should i not , either way any first tactical strike will get a massive strategic retaliation. so as far as i see the side with NFU doctrine and nuclear artillery is in a win win situation. i hope u get my point , u were looking at the tactical side while i am looking at the strategic implications ofcourse with the necessary headaches which u already mentioned. |

MikeCZA:what about nuclear torpedo ? ![]() Indians were pretty much interested in a Soviet torpedo-testing facility at Issyk-Kul lake in the eastern Kyrgyzstan they were looking into soviet manuals etc relating to such , in the guise of testing conventional torpedoes, the news died up pretty quick , but this is where things get interesting. raw was involved in the negotiations lol ![]() on a serious note does SA have any DEW/laser based weapons under development |

nemesis2u:Hehehe imagine an entire carrier group disappearing. Not according to my knowledge. Rheinmetall were pushing for their system as a possible upgrade within the inner tier of an air defence system. Most technology advanced projects in SA especially Denel's are on halt cause of funds. The have been mentions of projects like the Small guided bomb, Stealth Ingwe ATGM, LED-150 etc. |

The Nazis made many operational firsts from jets, choppers to corner shots! Here's the first NVG using infra red mounted on the G3 predecessor the STG 44. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaGXbCtLSxs It projected an infrared beam with a 'scope beneath it through which the shooter saw his target. The whole set up with battery was at least 12 kgs.

Have you any considered the logistical demands of corps sized conventional attritional warfare? Lets look at the heaviest battle of the Pacific,Okinawa,1945-the Solomons,New Guinea and Burma were all a dress rehearsal. A 100K US servicemen invaded the IJA 32nd army and within 2 months lost 75K including,KIA,POW and MIA!! The Japs under Lt.Gen Mitsuru Ushijima suffered nearly 100% KIA,with only 7k captured. They destroyed 60% of US tanks and sunk 36 ships. Kamikaze pilots before their last flight. An idea of the terror they caused-how many rounds do you think are airborne in that pic? US forces fired and dropped nearly 100k tons of ordnance and 37k gallons of napalm within the 2 months practically shaved every brick standing atop the other. Everything had to be completely rebuilt post war.

The Advanced Assault Rifle (AAR) , previously known as MCIWS, is going to be inducted into Indian Armed Forces within 6-10 months if any further problem doesn't arise. All modifications, suggested and demanded by army, have been done. All trials have been conducted successfully. The new model has reduced the weight further, means AAR is lighter than early MCIWS. It can accept 5.56, 6.8 and 7.62 mm ammo, giving an edge. More than 250 models have been evaluated and more than 25000 rounds have been fired still now.

Henry240:u surely like to drag me to the guillotine now and then dont u ? ![]() first go shake hands with commanders who took the good decision to implement the dual civilian military cellular network. a dual use network will off set the costs incurred and free up funds and importantly create funds later to further develop and expand the system. generally the trend for military is to go for standalone systems as far as the networking segment is concerned, however it is always desirable to exploit the commercial/civilian infra to deploy the secure networks in times of need. importantly NA endevour to creating and deploying a network geared to serve both civilian and military applications will both have its advantages and importantly challenges. at the end of the day, how good is the system will be decided by how good its capabilities r towards 1.ensuring information security 2.ensuring infrastructure mobility 3.ensuring resilience of network 4.ensuring immunity to attacks 5.ability to interconnect legacy and future network 6.providing 'on the move' connectivity 7.providing multiple backhaul options etc etc also NA has/will have to vet the various vendors (OEMs who will supply the routers , switches etc etc) equipment's when they come through. they will need to be thoroughly tested for 'intended' / 'un-intended' backdoors .it has to be lead by the concerned security and vetting agencies and not left to the developer. anyways cant comment perse on the nigerian 4GLTE C4ISR network becz it is still to be implemented in real, untill its development is complete and atleast the basic backbone is up and running , it will be difficult to say anything on it. on paper it looks good and capable and importantly economically sustainable by itself. one area i am concerned is the vastness of its implementation ,according to me it might not be that easy in the end to seamless integrate all of them . it will surely create problems . but the onus is on the developer to prove me wrong ![]() eg. developing a standalone tactical military standard LTE network with the capability to serve different command echelons like brigade, battalion and subordinate units by establishing a cellular network, with selected units equipped to function as base stations/LTE nodes, creating a communications cloud wherever they operate/move, and also support data, images, video and voice communications at very high speed, enabling the sharing of sensors, intelligence, voice and video streams is a very difficult task by itself. applying such systems into larger applications (ie beyond tactical realm ) will stretch the developers capabilities to the limit. end notes : a good pragmatic and sustainable approach by NA , me thinks the developer will go for a staggered approach ,getting the backbone up and then proceed with capabilities/functionality being added as per the pre planned schedule and as per capability both in house or through foreign hand holding/involvement . entire 'projected' fully functional grid will take 5 years or more to come up according to my estimate. when completed it will be an achievement to be proud of. ps: these r my opinions , so maybe correct or maybe incorrect. user discretion advised |
