was the position of the can in the car stated in the post?
The position is inconsequential. No matter what, it is the button that should be stuck up like that. The gas is expelled from the top and that propels the container in the opposite direction. Just like missiles. Understand?

Oga, you mixed it up, that is actually Newton's Third Law of Motion: To every action, there is equal and opposite reaction force.
The first law is the law of INERTIA.
Oh, my bad. E don tey. grin

Thanks for the correction.

The pictures go against everything physics! Totally impossible!

Now, for a canister to be turned into a projectile, gas has to be expelled violently from it. I'm a situation like this, which accidentally results from heating, the weakest seal edge is where tends to be compromised, and guess where that is on the comtaimer- the TOP of it!

Now, if gas is expelled so fast as to propell the can itself, it means the can WILL MOVE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION to the direction of the expulsion! This very principle is Newton's Third law of motion!

So, tell me fellas, how come the canister is positioned in such a manner when it should be the button that should be stuck up like that?

I perfectly understand the main advice of not leaving such objects in the car under such conditions is very important, but the picture should have be PROPERLY STAGGED as well. grin
I actually thought of that as well. The button shouldn't be the one up.

Good thinking! I also think the pics are funny cos impact would have such force only if it moves as explained by you. The way d pics are positioned seem impossible to have such impact. Infact for it to happen as stated it means the puncture must be at the buttom centre. But unfortunately in such cans the weakest points are the neck region where there is a seal after refill.

My oga, as far as I'm concerned, you have invoked the appropriate law to explain your argument, whatever number the law belongs to is immaterial, I jumped in just to straighten it for the benefit of JAMB candidates, you know they are more in number here. Infact, some of them will even capitalise on that and start bleating all over the places. grin grin

In fact, it is literally impossible for conventional gas cylinders to be blown out from the bottom (as against what the picture is suggesting) since their bottom ate reinforced by making them concave, leaving the most likely area of failure to be the valves and seals at the top. smiley

a missile is designed to go that way, this can isn't designed, plus so many factors might had affected it to go the other direction like it being deflected by something in the car..... I understand your point tho, but its real.

Bros calm down. What if the can started its motion at an acute angle? Meaning it hit a wall/obstruction perpendicularly and changed position once/several times on motion b4 landing in such way. We don't know the mass of d can, volume of d product in it, and d amount of pressure used in d initial storage. Lastly and as earlier stated, we dont know d position d car owner placed d can.

The picture is not staged. It has actually experienced it when a body-spray exploding and damaging the diaphragm of my car's speaker. I know you don't have doubt about the explosion anyway. Now to your observation. You cannot be sure that the leakage is from the top as you didn't see the bottom of the can. It could be could both be coming from the top and bottom concurrently with the gas momentum higher at the bottom. The dent you are seeing at the top of the cannister could be as a result of a collision with the windshield.

The motion of the can can also be altered as it flies around the car colliding with every part of the car until it get stuck on the glass. There are so many unknowns. You did well by thinking this but that is the actual flight is a combination of many unknown factors and forces whuch schools may be silent on.

Noooooo! For the can to have such an impact as to bore such a hole through the windshield, it means it travelled along a vertical trajectory over at least some seconds! That then brings us back to square one! The head and not the button was blown, and as such, it should be the buttom stuck up there and not the head as depicted.

Hain! embarassed

And what if ricocheted by something in the car? Say the front seat?
The position indicates it travelled vertically for some time. Under this time, it acquired sufficient momentum to bore through the reinforced glass. If it's trajectory was deflected by any object, it wouldn't have such precise impact!

I don't know if you understand. .

Actually, you and OmenkaLives are not accurate. Yes the first law is inertial. And you also correct about 2nd and 3rd of Newtons. But the law demonstrated here is Newton's momentum law which culminates in F=ma (2nd law)

I agree with you.

BUT, some cans have relief valves at the bottom too. The bottom of this can was never shown.

Don't justify what you don't know. You only took O-level physics. what make you think this is a vertical travel? Do you know the exact point of leakage, do you know if there what defect in this can from the manufacturer, Do you know the initial position of the can? The pointed valve alone is an addition pressure. What force do I need to pierce a needle into your skin compared to piercing a biro bottom into your skin? You have no idea of the unknowns yet you think you a great physicist.

Both tyre and tire are correct. Tire is American English. So don't be restricted to only that you kw. There may be another side of that which you kw, that's why it's good to have expanded horizon of ideas

My dear...you are so right...I was still trying to reason the picture, when I decided to let go and read few comments...woolaaah...you made life easier for me, as too much cracking of brain these days no too good...lol

Anyway, the op should do a better job with picture - writeup correlation next time...

The can actually could have exploded outside the car and it burst the windshield, the reason the bottom of it is inside the burst windshield.

On a second look, it could equally have busted the windshield from the inside, as stated by Mayflowa, taking a close look at the surroundings of the can...The splinters of the windshield seems to be pouring outside...

Read through omenkalives' argument. He actually talked about Newton's law of motion when he was trying to give a reason for recoil of the can.
omenkaLives:

If that is the case, which of the laws is he trying to invoke? Note, the second law is more concerned with acceleration being proportional to applied force (both quantities in same direction): the second law says: The rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the applied force (in the same direction.) Of course, you can't apply push/pull in one direction and expect the effect in the opposite.
The third law says: To every action force, there is equal and opposite reaction force. Now, which of these laws explains recoil? Note, this is the principle of rocket launch, air lift, ship's propulsion in water and a host of others.
Note also the keywords, "opposite"
