OP is so on point.
To start with, people now prefer to settle cases amicably without a lawyer.
The type of lawyers I see everyday in PH and Lagos make me weep for the profession.

I will advise the young ones to look into ICT. forget this Law thing! don't waste your time.
Secondly if you finish studying Law and you are not very good with the use of English, what us ur fate?

The key to solving this is to invest in more STeM courses. This will bring up more opportunities. Many people select these courses not really because they want them but because they are easy to get admission to.
Courses/Departments like Dentistry and whatnot are few and far and competition is stiff. Many highly qualified persons are not taken. So many applicants just get a course they can easily enter.

Last last it's all to get the certificates. Many people enter University knowing that they may not even get a job in the field they are studying in.

In this recession , many people decide setting their disputes outside the court. Feeling for young lawyers who don't have better connections to manage properties and solicit for cases that pays well. Chaiii everyone is affected in this country . Street is the only thing feeding many graduates now.

This is the type of writeup one put up when you lack ideas on a particular issue. The OP in his myopic mind thinks all Banking&finance graduates are restricted to banking work only. If as a banking and finance graduate you can't stand your ground and raise your head above your shoulders in a gathering of Bus admin,Accounting, economic & statistics students, then you need to burn your certificate. A banking & finance graduate ought to have knowledge of anything concerning finance. When you tell some people that you're a BFN graduate, they suddenly think you can only work in a bank.

Spot on and very educating.I studied chemical engineering but if I had known earlier I would gone for none competitive courses,in fact most of our colleagues that graduated over 10 years ago are going back to learning trade or handwork as no job is available .Though I thank God for my situation .

Tupac Amaru Shakur an illiterate black American rapper years ago demanded that black Americans should cut down on the number of athletes, music stars and entertainers they had and get more kids going to school to study Law, Accounting, Medicine and a lot more scientists. 2pac was truly prophetic.

Great write up, its time Nigerians engage in continuous life long learning/education, it's ok to study law , banking an finance etc but the key is to merely see it as a stepping stone into the real world. On graduation one must review the economy and the job opportunities and then choose a path based on the demand of the labour market and professional self employment opportunities. It might be the case you pursue a masters degree to put you on a different career path. You could study law and then pursue a career in Human resources management, become realtor, seek local government or state government administrative employment opportunities. Agriculture is a very expansive industry and one can see where they can fit into this sector, agriculture does not just mean you are a hands of farmer, there are many opportunities from distribution and storage, logistics, consultancy matters such as land and government grants, veterinary services, middle man selling opportunities, retail. Nursing offers a great opportunity for people with law and banking degrees, as you build your career in nursing along the way you might get the opportunity to seek out carving out a legal career (not barrister in court) . I know engineers that are successful in the agricultural sector

This should apply to all available courses in Nigeria even medicine. Nigeria should stop producing university graduates we have had enough for now

Very true......I have never regretted studying hospitality and tourism mgt, that course is so on point! Happy where I am today,i'm as flexible and versatile as anything u can think of in the labour market apart from the so called "medicine" grin

it is a pity how some ignorami are exposing their ignorance on the relevance of law as a profession in the society.
Some areas of practice are within the exclusive reserve of legal practitioners and can never be replaced by modern softwares.
Law profession is a noble calling.
I'm yet to see a lawyer who knows his onions and suffers penury.
I'm presently in law school and there are briefs floating over my head which will be crystallized as soon as I'm called to the bar.
@ Op, speak for yourself and do not speak for lawyers

I agree completely with his point if view....but he left out the most important one.....engineering. I mean ICT is good. but beyond ICT....we need to start creating basic things ourselves....freezers, basic machinery etc

There is no reasonable message there. All I could see was an attempt to relegate the listed professions.
Any professional could carve a niche for oneself notwithstanding the number of professionals in such field.
Re: We Don't Need More Lawyers/Banking, Finance Graduates In Nigeria: Nimi Princewil by safarigirl(f):
Some people are just here to make themselves feel better about whatever shitty courses they got stuck with.

The idea that every lawyer practices law in its strict sense is archaic, of every 100 lawyers you see, less than thirty actually practice.

The majority implement their knowledge of law on other facets of life. There is NO establishment that operates without the input of a legal team, which needs lawyers.

The idea that any random farmer or computer scientist is equipped with appropriate knowledge of law is ridiculous.

Most law students just want to get a PROFESSIONAL degree so they do not end up being dependent on one oga who may choose to sack them the day his wife forgets to service him.

Finally @OP, in today's world, skills get you to the top, so be you a lawyer, educationist, doctor, accountant, political scientist, sociologist, you need skills to make it, not a useless piece of paper

Tell them ooo people like OP thinks BFN graduates r only restricted to working in a bank that shows the OP is not exposed coz every organization in the world deals with finance and have a finance department that's where a finance graduate comes in. Finance is like a wheel of the organization it keeps the organization going in business....Pls OP make ur research wella coz as far as am concerned BFN graduates r wanted in all organizations. Thank you

He was commenting with his view on the society as a whole, not on individuals. I'll tell you this; Nigeria needs more engineers than lawyers. More people in the "real" sector so to speak.

We don't create or manufacture things generally here that's why we are having trade deficits, falling currency value. If the real sector is not buoyant enough to support the large number of lawyers and bankers out there...there will always be redundancies in those professions.
Re: We Don't Need More Lawyers/Banking, Finance Graduates In Nigeria: Nimi Princewil by okito: 11:27am On May 31, 2017
My take...Study a course that gives you great joy, be it medicine, theatre arts, engineering etc. Fortunately most of the courses the OP advised people to go into like Agriculture, theatre arts, IT are professions you can easily take up in future even without having university degrees in those courses, professional courses/certificates may just suffice rather than academic degrees especially IT. I am an Engineer (O & G industry) and I have seen that at the end of the day, your passion for what you do will give you the greatest satisfaction, not even the money you make. So, if you are already in School, please try and be the best in whatever you do and love it too. If you are not, dont just go for it because you want to be a graduate, make sure you love it! All professions are important! It is up to you....
