The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a dog breed developed in Zimbabwe, formerly Rhodesia. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was previously known as Rhodesian Lion Dog, African Lion Hound or African lion dog because of its ability to keep a lion at bay while awaiting its master's arrival to make the kill. One of the breed's unique trait is that it has a ridge of hair along its spine which runs in opposite direction to the rest of its coat. The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a muscular and powerful build.

The breed is intelligent, loyal and learn quickly, but will be stubborn and willful if it is stronger minded than its owner (in other words they will only pay attention a dominant owner). Ridgebacks react best to an extremely consistent and firm but calm approach to training, training should begin at a young age. This breed was officially recognized by the AKC in 1955.

In my opinion, the Rhodesian Ridgeback shares a slight resemblance to the South African Mastiff (Boerboel) in terms of its muscular frame, color, and roots (they both have roots in Africa). What are your thoughts on this breed?

I just love this breed, it doesn't seem as popular as boerboels in Naija considering both came from the same region..

I wonder why, breeders??

What could be the reason, not exotic looking enough or what or are they expensive..

Sorry for your loss. I dont know of any, I think the best bet is to ask family and friends if they have a dog they want to give up for adoption.

This looks somewhat like a mixed breed to me, It has the size of a St Bernard, the colour of a Rottweiler, and also some features of a Boerboel.
