What touched me most deeply in the entire article is the quote:

"If a language dies, so does the human spirit. A people without a culture will lose their self respect."

This is a most profound statement. Many Nigerians, at home and in the diaspora try as much as possible to emulate the western culture, ignorantly assuming that it will make them appear 'posh' and 'classy'. They don't realise that if the Westerners despised their own culture the way Nigerians do theirs, we won't even have a culture to emulate.

I have been speaking with a client who insists on being more American than the average American. When we talk on phone he introduces himself as Mr Yuuummy (Yomi). He speaks with an exaggerated American accent, even though his 'Yoruba-tic' intonation still manages to burst though. When I met him one to one I was unimpressed because of his whole fakeness. These kinds of Nigerians will go to Europe and the Americas and be more native than the aborigines.

Is it inferiority complex? A lack of self respect brought about by the despising of their own unique culture? You go London and instantly forget you're a Nigerian. Your children grow up to see themselves as English people because you have made sure they see their roots as 'inferior'.

Your culture is what makes you stand out from the average Joe. Own it. Be proud of it. Fly the flag wherever you find yourself outside the shores of Nigeria.

Just don't fly the flag and disgrace us sha. Our rep is already bad enough as it is.
SUPER INFERIORITY COMPLEX. Am too big for that. Anywhere I go people would even love to speak my language

I repeat, LIES.

How can the Africans at home rebel when many of them don't know better? It's what the media feeds to them that they swallow, which is why the government mandated 60:40 local content broadcasts in Nigeria.

Africans who go abroad fall into different categories, one of them I've mentioned in my post while another category are those who go abroad and have the spirit of Nationalism awakened in them. You go, realise that white is not superior after all and spiritually go back to your roots.

Then you have to give it to Africans abroad.
They too have the same media trying to brainwash them but they refused.
WE are the one with inferiority complex

I honestly don't know why these Nigerian people who have never left their mud houses love shitting on Peckham. I guess its cos that's only the place they've heard about in London. The article was written in 2005 and back then when Peckham was at its worst - it wasn't even close to worst/poorest parts of London. Most people just see Rye Lane and start dissing the place. Places like Woowlich, Brixton, Walworth, Stratford, Newham, Deptford, Tottenham, Hackney, Dalston, Bermondsey, etc., have always been worse than Peckham aesthetically. How many super-tall high rise council flats were in Peckham, even when it was at its worst?

The place even looks very decent now and a lot has changed in the last 10 years, with gentrification.

It's just basically like shitting on Brooklyn, NY, in the US. I was in Brooklyn when it was at its worst (not the new gentrified one) and Peckham looks like paradise compared to the place, especially with the giant rats they have in NY and the shootings. East New York is still super-ghetto (worse than anything Peckham was at its worst) in 2017 and there are tons of Nigerians living there. But I've never seen these Nigerians shyt on Brooklyn and the place has a big Nigerian community. And the people from there are proud of who they're.

Anyway, I only see people shyt on Peckham on here. The whole thing reeks of low self-esteem, especially since most Nigerians in London can't even afford to live there based on their wages. In London, being from Peckham is a thing of pride and no one brags about their hometown more than those from Peckham the Narm and Pecknizzy. They wouldn't understand it unless they're from there.

Those from Peckham aren't sweating this shyt. The place has produced more successful black people in the UK than any other part of London.

Brag?

Are you a Nigerian, black or African

I need clarification

lol blame games. It would make sense that those back home would be more rebelious? Isnt it disgraceful. So what exatly did you mean by saying diasporans like to imitate western cultures? undecided Most women in nigeria are bald-headed, cos they know nothing of their natural hair care. Wheareas diasporans love and embrace theirs so it thrives and grows. You lot are quick to dismiss african religions as juju and witchcraft without knowing a thing. Diasporans are eager for the knowledge.

Ur post was patronising and inaccurate undecided Why exactly do you lot look down on others when you all should be ashamed of urselves

oh btw, no Nigerian in london sees themselves as english... dont be silly

Chiefly:

When in Rome behave like Romans Huh...

I get what you trying to say tho, you do have a point... But have you ever heard a white man, Lebanese or an Indian conscious or unconsciously speak like a Nigerian; that's an Igbo/Yoruba or Hausa? Even after spending donkey years here? Do they showcase it in Hollywood/Bollywood? But here every Joe that has never even been to an airport is forming Jand and it's so obvious in Nollywood and our music....

Which should i talk about?? guys who no longer eat local dishes just cos they spent some time outside? or peeps who travel out and actually refuse to come home.. (to each man his own tho not my business really)

Self respect can't pay bills true but nothing will make a foreigner respect you more than hanging on to your fundamental values, they are intrinsic..

Culture is fluid, it isn't static. There is a strong correlation between cultural integration by immigrants and career success, immigrants who cling on to their own cultures and refuse to integrate with others are overwhelmingly the same people who end up with unskilled jobs. This is a fact. My point remains - an immigrant who considers his/her culture so important that they choose not to imbibe the culture of their host country is better off going back to his/her own country. There is no way a successful immigrant will not imbibe aspects of the culture of the country that has made him/her a success, even Wole Soyinka speaks with a foreign accent.

Brilliant submission at the bolded.
It is the backward mentality of indiscriminate cultural retention that has set arabian muslim immigrants on a war path with western civilization.
