Culture is fluid, it isn't static. There is a strong correlation between cultural integration by immigrants and career success, immigrants who cling on to their own cultures and refuse to integrate with others are overwhelmingly the same people who end up with unskilled jobs. This is a fact. My point remains - an immigrant who considers his/her culture so important that they choose not to imbibe the culture of their host country is better off going back to his/her own country. There is no way a successful immigrant will not imbibe aspects of the culture of the country that has made him/her a success, even Wole Soyinka speaks with a foreign accent.

I love your intelligent contributions.

Many Asians retain their languages but succeed, it's only Africans that chant this crap.

oh yeah i met payton and stockton and have their autographs on my wallet. that was definitely the golden era. hey the accent aint no biggie bro so long as people can understand what you are saying. nothing worse than a fake accent lol. just keep it the way it is.

Exactly, no need to form the accent. For us Nigerians, its very difficult for our accent to change. My wife is from the Caribbean and she came to America when she was 22, 15 years down the line she sound so American but a Nigerian accent will never change. I work in a office where I have to give powerpoint presentation almost every week, I have learnt to slow down when I talk and people understand me perfectly even with my Nigerian accent.

Paying well ke? Someone who could not even pay what we charged him. He ended up dropping his goods at our office so that we can help him sell it and send the money to the US.

What touched me most deeply in the entire article is the quote:

"If a language dies, so does the human spirit. A people without a culture will lose their self respect."

This is a most profound statement. Many Nigerians, at home and in the diaspora try as much as possible to emulate the western culture, ignorantly assuming that it will make them appear 'posh' and 'classy'. They don't realise that if the Westerners despised their own culture the way Nigerians do theirs, we won't even have a culture to emulate.

I have been speaking with a client who insists on being more American than the average American. When we talk on phone he introduces himself as Mr Yuuummy (Yomi). He speaks with an exaggerated American accent, even though his 'Yoruba-tic' intonation still manages to burst though. When I met him one to one I was unimpressed because of his whole fakeness. These kinds of Nigerians will go to Europe and the Americas and be more native than the aborigines.

Is it inferiority complex? A lack of self respect brought about by the despising of their own unique culture? You go London and instantly forget you're a Nigerian. Your children grow up to see themselves as English people because you have made sure they see their roots as 'inferior'.

Your culture is what makes you stand out from the average Joe. Own it. Be proud of it. Fly the flag wherever you find yourself outside the shores of Nigeria.

Just don't fly the flag and disgrace us sha. Our rep is already bad enough as it is.

Hello everyone, my name is Ifeoluwa and I am a Surrey-based final year secondary school student. My family first migrated to the UK from Nigeria in 2002, with the aim of hoping to effectively integrate into this society. I am enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and as part of my Diploma Programme, I have to complete a 4000 word mini thesis. The topic I have chosen to explore is the social factors that have contributed to the external migration of Nigerian's to Peckham since the 1980s. In order to collect sufficient primary data, could you please be so kind as to fill out this questionnaire for me?

Best wishes,

Ifeoluwa

Peckham na small Naija. Once you alight from Peckham Rye station, the smell that greet you will make you want to vomit. The place is also very dirty with rubbish all over, talkless of the rough looking area boys in the hood. However, nothing can beat Presidential Suya on Old Kent Road.
