The Conservatives are set to be the largest party but without an overall majority according a joint BBC/Sky/ITV exit poll, which indicated the Tories will win 314 seats and Labour 266.

Polling stations opened at 7am and they closed at 10pm with the first result, likely to be Houghton and Sunderland South which has been quickest at the last five elections, expected to declare just one hour later at 11pm.

BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg says Theresa May took "a high risk strategy" by calling the election.

She says Mrs May's catchphrase had been "strong and stable leadership", but she may well end the night diminshed

Poll: Conservatives largest party, but could lose seats

The exit poll indicates that the Conservatives will be the largest party but will lose 17 seats with a projection of 314 seats.

The poll suggests Labour will get 266 seats - a rise of 34 seats.

It puts the Liberal Democrats at 14 - an increase of six, SNP 34, Plaid three and Greens one, and UKIP will lose their only seat. The other parties will account for 18 seats between them.

Very interesting election

1.Looks like Comrade Corbyn is much better than we thought! Might even become PM Comrade Corbyn

2.Theresa May's gamble certainly did not pay off. I was surprised when she called a snap election after all there had been an election some two years earlier. Election fatigue, eh.?

3.The Lib Dems (my party if I were a British citizen)...not doing well. At all.

4.Wonder what it means for Brexit.? Nigel is certain that there may be a second referendum on the matter.

One other thing....Conservatives losing seats...at least two ministers gone....and they are already singing 'Hung Parliament'.

On the plus side for the Tories...they did gain seats in Scotland...including claiming Alex Salmond's seat (that's one big scalp!)

That's the Official Monster Raving Loony Party .

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party is a registered political party established in the United Kingdom in 1983 by the musician David Sutch, better known as "Screaming Lord Sutch, 3rd Earl of Harrow" or simply "Lord Sutch". It is notable for its deliberately bizarre policies and it effectively exists to satirize British politics, and to offer itself as an alternative for protest voters, especially in constituencies where the party holding the seat is unlikely to lose it and everyone else's vote would be quietly wasted.

Nationalisation

The Loony Party will nationalise all other political parties . . . and when they don’t keep their manifesto promises they will be merged into Rainbow George’s ‘Rainbow Alliance’.
We will nationalise crime to make sure it doesn’t pay.(Come again?)

We shall see over the next few days what happens....but for now, Labour , and the LibDems are both left of center. SNP is a nationalist party with a left wing program. They could form a coalition.
