Oyo and Ogun State Governments have declared Monday, June 12, 2017 as work-free day in the state.

Secretary to the Ogun State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli in a statement made available to journalists on Friday said Governor Abiola Ajimobi approved Monday as work-free day to commemorate the annulment of the anniversary of the June 12, 1993 elections, generally believed to have been won by late Chief MKO Abiola.

He said the government will use the anniversary to honour the martyrdom of Chief Abiola, who laid down his life for Nigerians to enjoy the democratic dividends of today.

Similarly, the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has declared Monday, June 12, 2017 as work-free day.

A statement issued on Friday in Abeokuta, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Taiwo Adeoluwa, said the annual holiday is in honour of the late illustrious son of the state, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely believed to have won the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election, which marked a unique watershed in Nigeria’s democracy.

The statement reads in part, “This year’s celebration will feature the annual ‘Democracy Walk’, which will be led by the governor, starting from the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta at 7am.

“The walk is expected to take participants through major roads in the state capital to the Abiola family homestead at Oke-Ido, Gbagura, Abeokuta North Local Government Area, where special prayers and speeches will be made.

“Later in the day, an inspirational stage play, ‘Oju Kelekun’ (farewell to reproach), directed by Prof. Bakare Ojo Rasaki, will be performed at the June 12 Cultural Centre, between 3:45 and 6:00pm.”

Are you OK? Who cares if you people decide to shut down your entire region? Coz I definitely do not give a shyt as whatever happens in the SE does not affect my life in any way, shape or form so don't flatter yourself. Perhaps you are mistaking me for a Northerner. FYI, I'm Yoruba and down here we don't give a flipping fvck about y'all. If una like una fit shut down una region for months sef, it doesn't affect our lives. Abeg swerve.

One is to honour the start of the struggle from the military, sacrifices were involved, the whole of Nigeria was involved, and is decleared by the governors ,the other was a form of revolt by someone who is not a constituted authority, the Igbo governors didn't support it.

In your dreams, have you ever considered yourself more knowledgeable than me

That is abuse of office.... Governors suggesting that holiday are supporting anarchy.
Abiola committed treason, usurping the Supreme Military Commander's powers and declaring himself President.
He had no respect for constituted authority and so; deserves no reverence.

How exactly did that military government assume power? By the popular votes of the citizens or by "usurping power"? If your answer is "usurping power", then you have no right to say Abiola committed treason and had no respect for constituted authority.

Please, just take the young man's advice, yeah? Google really helps.

Does he deserve reverence Yes.

Does he deserve public holiday. NO

What good did he do to the states concerned?

What is the rationale behind it.

Losing your mandate doesn't make you deserving of a public mandate.

No bashing please.

Just mention significant strides he made in the states concerned to warrant a public holiday in his honour.
he could have given up on d mandate freely given to him by d majority of Nigerians and probably still alive till today, just like Obasanjo and co.But he chose to lay down his life, endure d imprisonment for democracy to be birth. His wife was also assassinated and his business went down greatly. He lost everything and eventually lost his life.He deserves it from Nigeria.Ojukwu would have deserve same honour but after leading 3 millions of his people to early grave,he abandoned them, feared for his life and left them with Nigeria and ran away.He wanted to be president at all cost, still came back to same Nigeria u fought and contested but lost woefully even in his region, which means they didn't even reference him. There is a big difference btw these two great nigerians----for those that were comparing them.
