I am a pan-africanist who loves to learn about other African countries. I've taken a look at your forum and have followed a bit of the "Igbos Must Leave The North Ultimatum". I do not have enough knowledge to comment about matters of Nigeria. I Don't know much about the "real tension" as opposed to the "Online tension" that is in Nigeria. But i'll let you out on some info...

In 2005, a group of missionaries came from 20 different countries for a one-month mission activity in Kenya. One of the guys was a Burundian. While we were watching the news, he saw how people were demonstrating and how much they were being clobbered as the were demonstrating about the constitution making process. When he saw that, he told me "This country is heading for bloodshed. Things are not good in this country."

When i heard him say that, i laughed. I told him that politics in Kenya is very hot, "But we are never stupid enough to kill each other because of politics. We are an intelligent group of people"

The violence of 2007 was TOTALLY UNEXPECTED. It was spontaneous, but it didn't happen by chance. It just happened when the circumstances are just right.

What does this have to do with Nigeria?

Same thing...

Many of you here are chatting online, but i believe very few of you actually understand that the stage for violence is closer than you can imagine. For the southerners living in the North, as much as you can, get out of that place. Forget about the Yoruba, Igbo whatever nonsense. Whereas there are a majority of people who feel that the ultimatums are heading nowhere, the truth is that you only think that way because you forget a very important scenario right now in Nigeria:

BUHARI IS SICK!!!.

What if he dies while you are still bickering? That would be a game changer. The Northerners will be mourning and they may even be angry. The so called "Moderate voices" in the north will change the minute a southerner celebrates the death of Buhari. If a group of ten southerners make a video celebrating the death of Buhari, trust me, that will be enough evidence to make the most "moderate" Northerner to explode. And even though he might not pick a machete and kill his neighbour, he'll just keep quiet and that's enough to let evil prevail.

The Timebomb is just waiting for a trigger, and the death of Buhari (if it happens) is a perfect excuse to slaughter the Southerners. I wish Nigeria the best

If you are Yoruba and you are thinking "This is an Igbo-Hausa" problem, you're very very ignorant. When i was in standard six, my favorite story was called "The Noisy Hornbill". I'm not sure whether there is a Nigerian Equivalent. I'd urge all Non-Igbos to read it. I can't get it online, but here is someone who has retold the story, though not as well:

In a large forest lived the hornbill, and other animals of course! Day in day out the hornbill would make its incessant noises which would be echoed all over the forest. The ladybird however was not indifferent to the hornbill's noise. So she summoned the snail, the mushroom, the hen and other plants and animals that lived in that great forest. To the ladybird's horror however, all the animals and plants dismissed her concerns! The mushroom claimed he did not mind the hornbill's noise since the hornbill had a constitutional right to make as much noise as she loved. The snail retorted that what the hornbill did was none of his business all he cared about was his children and what they would feed on. Everyone gave their excuses and at the end of the day all the ladybird could conclude was what the hen told her, "Everyone for himself, God for us all!!"
However one fateful morning as the hunter was passing by the forest, he was greatly attracted to venture into the forest following the hornbill's quacks, and in he went! Of course the first thing he did was shoot down the hornbill who fell on the mushroom!!! So he picked up the horn bill and the awesome looking mushrooms and ofcourse the snail was well tucked under the mushrooms, so he picked the snail too! When the hen saw what was happening he tried to sound an alarm to the rest of the forest but it was TOO LATE he was captured by the hunter

You don't need a kenya or a Malawian to remind you the imminent doom that is coming.

It's just there for everyone to see .

You don't even know what led to the first civil war. Let me bring to your notice that what led to the first civil war has just arrived in a convoy.

Great to hear that though I said the same thing in 2005. It may not be a war, but perharps widespread violence? 3,000 people dead? I wouldn't wish that. But please don't be complacent.

SmallSimba, am also a kenyan with quite sometime in Nairaland. I joined this forum mainly to listen to online debates and learn from other Africans. Among the things i know is that there is alot of ethnic violence in Nigeria. Just google "Southern Kaduna" or "Fulani herdsmen " on the nairaland search engine and you will be chastened by what we had to undergo in 2007 in comparison . The inter religious violence also has an ethnic twist to it, and a few weeks ago i asked my pastor who is my ex school mate to pray for the Christians of Nigeria. Along with countries like Sudan, Somalia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia that are extremely intolerant of Christianity, Nigeria is the only Muslim majority country(the Muslim % is slightly over 50), not in the Middle East where Christians are regularly butchered for their faith.

You should also know that there is a nascent movement located in the south east of the country who are agitating for a break up of Nigeria and they call themselves IPOB. They want to reactuate the still born republic of biafra that was the cause of the Nigerian civil war. That war was very destructive and indeed was the bloodiest conflict ever on African soil at any time in history. The wounds of that war may have somewhat subsided, but inevitably there are always embers in the fire place itching for a rematch, sadly. This separatism infact is not confined to that section of Nigeria. Indeed there exist several other secessionist or regionalist movements across all regions like the guys who gave that ultimatum. Large countries tend to be like that - did you know for instance there exist Texas nationalists who want to break away from USA? You do recall the movement by Quebecois to break away from English speaking Canada and create their own French speaking wonderland in the early 2000s? So Nigerians are always on a knife edge with such elements in their population, its ever tense. Sometimes the utterances by important leaders there to other tribes can make one shudder, something that would make you be charged with hate speech ASAP in Kenya. The likes of Moses Kuria for example would be bridesmaids by comparison in Nigeria . Last election a traditional Oba or King of Lagos ordered all igbos to vote for the incumbent party in power or else drown in the Lagos lagoon! Imagine that!

That being said, i pray for peace and prosperity for all afrikans everywhere. The major problem i think in Nigeria is lack of a leader who can forge a bond between her peoples so that nobody feels left out. A Mandela or George Washington type national leader is sorely lacking. From my vantage point, which i confess is not a solid one being electronic media and internet influenced and not practical, i see Buhari not being truly on top of the unifying game. Even Goodluck and Obasanjo had major headaches trying to satisfy the nations competing regional factions. In this regard, its very much like India. If you ever asked me which leader of a large nation i admire most, i would say Vladimir Putin without hesitation. Why? The man has forged a nation under a firm but fair grip. Russians love him like no business. Even his critics concede he is the best devil available to lead the nation. Russians don't like sissified leaders like Yeltsin who made Russia look weak. Putin's rise put an end to sissified leaders and restored the historical image of a tough but fair leader that made Russia great again.

I think Nigeria needs a Putin.

Nigeria is a time ticking to explode any time soon.

If a Kenyan can see the future and we Nigerians are blind then something is wrong.

Just like he said, if Buhari dies today then no Yoruba nor an Igbo man will survive the massacre in the North.

A word is enough for the wise.

Thanks for the Advice. Nigerian Youths are toothless sometimes. They bark just to warn. We still have some astute educated elders to lead us out of this Recession quagmire. Some thieves, who can never stop stealing till they go to Hell are the real cause of our present predicaments. We shall overcome. Many thanks to your Tribesman, Obama, for his contributions.

Thanks. Kenya too needs a Putin to really clean up the mess we are in. The difference between us and the Nigerians is that we tend to be very sensitive to violence sentiments unlike in 2007. Back then, we overrated our intelligence. Today, we know that there is no madness beyond us as a people. The Nigerians in my opinion, have overrated their tenacity. That's why i respect Goodluck. If he had won and declared the winner, there would have been violence still. I'm still amazed that there are southerners still living in the North. There was a civil war in Rwanda-Burundi; But it was the death of the presidents that triggered the massacre of the Tutsi. Southernors must know that if Buhari were to pass on, the consequences might be unintended. Different activities in the world set the perfect stage for the exploding of the North's anger.
