Bro, our emergency response to situations is zero to none. Only a few states like Lagos can boast of functioning emergency management services.

Bro, it is a given that a highrise built in '74 would have at least fire escapes.

It was also reported that 10m pounds was spent in refurbishing the building only recently. Couldn't that 'modest' sum cover for the installation of fire alarms and a sprinkler system too?

Wow, didnt know that. It probably shows there is no perfect system anywhere.

This is UK not Nigeria. The house ought to meet the right standard. Something is wrong somewhere.

You are not wrong but standard varies from time to time. I have worked within safety industry and know that some things that are stringent now were not compulsory some years back. In the light of accidents and experience gained from such, modifications are made to standards.

My point exactly. But the abrupt response of the fire department compensated for the flaws in the building structure.

Explorers:
Dozens are feared dead today after an inferno believed to have started when a fridge exploded ripped through a 27-storey west London tower block in just 15 minutes.

Residents were seen throwing themselves and their children out of windows to avoid being burned to death - others made ropes by tying sheets together as fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in White City at 1am today.

But a baby tossed from the 'ninth or 10th floor' of the building housing 600 people was caught by a member of the public and survived with only broken bones and bruises, a witness has said.

The trapped, some of whom are still inside, were heard begging for their lives screamed 'help me' while waving white towels, torches and mobile phones to attract the attention of the 200 firefighters who started storming the building within six minutes of the 999 call.

Those who managed to flee said it was 'like hell on earth' inside and compared the disaster to the 9/11 attack - and also revealed there was no working fire alarm, sprinklers failed and the only staircase out was blocked.

The building's new cladding completed during a recent £10million refurbishment 'went up like a match' and sped up the blaze, another said.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has also demanded to know why Grenfell residents were told to 'stay put' in their flats for up to an hour in the event of a fire and will investigate claims that residents repeatedly warned that many people would die in the event of a major fire.

Dany Cotton, Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, said there had been 'a number of fatalities' while the London Ambulance Service said 50 people are in hospital and paramedics are treating many more walking wounded for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Desperate survivors being cared for in several west London rescue shelters have seen sobbing as family and loved-ones, including dozens of children, remain unaccounted for.

On a last note, for those that think that all is green on the other side (the Western Hemisphere), how can you explain away a 20+ storey building having no fire alarm or water sprinklers, or emergency fire exits for that matter?

I may be jumping the gun, but it looks like an attack to me: somebody turned off the water supply to sprinkler system or broke it, disabled the smoke alarms (there are many on each floor), then blocked the fire escape staircase, then started a fire.

It might have taken weeks to execute, and if so, UK is going to be in trouble.

Any of these should have been detected during recladding, as inspectors would have come through to check. There are too many things that failed for it to be entirely coincidental or human error, but who knows?

Holy sheet! People throwing themselves out of windows and high-rise floors to survive. The human instinct to survive is a very strong one: jumping to an uncertain fate to escape a certain fate.

Respect to the crowd that caught the baby. That was touching.

And sorry to add this, but I call it as I see it. If this were to be Nigeria, in all likelihood those people would have perished beyond redemption.

The fire service responded within SIX minutes, but could not fully contain the conflagration. Our own go tell you say water no dey, or na after house don burn finish you go come dey hear wi-wo-wi-wo. Speaking from personal experience.

sharrap....the sprinklers and alarms failed. do u think d building will even be approved in the first place.

u think say na your rotten 9ja with 6-story buildings witout an extinguisher talkless of a fire emergency system in the building plan.

look at this as a terror attack.

Quite insightful, but what's the essence of the elaborate planning? Why not just blow the building to smithereens?

How sad!!! Someone has taken his bad luck to London. His presence anywhere portends everything evil and tragic. Take him to another country, and see the tragedy that will befall that country. God, save Your people.

Apology accepted. However, if you observed where I pointed out to someone that it'd be impossible for a building of that site not to have prerequisite safety precautions and appliances; and if you understand that moribund appliances are the same as non-existent ones, there'd have been no need for your outburst.

On whose strength should I take it as a terror attack?

Bro it is clearly stated in the report that the only 'staircase' was blocked. Staircases are different from fire escapes.

On a last note, for those that think that all is green on the other side (the Western Hemisphere), how can you explain away a 20+ storey building having no fire alarm or water sprinklers, or emergency fire exits for that matter?

I have some questions for you

Where do you live?
Where's the nearest fire station to you?
Did you know that fire stations are supposed to be built beside every police station?
Do you know the fire service emergency number?
Do you have functioning fire extinguishers that are serviced when due?
What other safety plans and actions have you put in place in case of a fire emergency before the fire grows and the whole place is well alight?
Are you fire safety conscious? (Everybody should be trained to be fire safety conscious and of the basic use of fire protective equipment)

If you must know, as long as a fire engine is on-the-run, there is always water in its tank, and every water tank has a capacity, right?

Firemen are always eager to fight fire and save lives and properties but remember they are men like you and can only work with the limited resources they have. Ask your government when last a fire engine was bought in this country. I'm not talking about Lagos state cos they are an exception. Firefighters fight fire in this country without personal protective equipment and breathing apparatus, getting exposed to real danger. Imagine how much smoke they have to inhale and how many days they have to cough for.

My point is, blame the leadership and government...not the personnel.

I hope you learn to respect firemen who risk their lives to enter fires when people are running in the opposite direction.
