It is alarming to how CCTV monitors are handled in some organizations especially banks and supermarkets. Things that should be hidden are displaced for public view. I entered in on of Keystone banks in Port Harcourt (won't mention the location for security concern) and they have their CCTV monitor displayed for public view. I had to let them know the implications but to my greatest surprise, nothing has been done to it. Supermarkets are the worst. Sometimes you see the monitor almost at the entrance opposite you or a big signboard informing you that they have CCTV. What for?! CCTV was majorly manufactured for security purposes not for public views, neither is it a home video. It is even dangerous to let people know there's such gadgets in your organizations. It is suppose to be hidden and not displayed as most organizations do. The monitor or monitors are to be hidden away from the public. Infact, it should be in a room with one or two persons assigned to continuously monitor it so that no one can enter the organization without the knowledge of the security persons. It aids in making the security work easier and better. If displayed for the public, the organization and staff are been expose and placed at risk. Let's change our attitude towards it please, to avoid what shouldn't have happened to happen. |

Here in the U.S, CCTV monitors are displayed also in supermarkets, banks etc. I guess one of the advantage is that it discourages some of the thieves reducing the his headache of security men in such organisation. For instance if 50% of those who intended to steal are already discouraged the place is safer rather than chasing here and there every thief monitored on hidden cameras. The hardened criminals might still go ahead anyway and may not even get away with the crime no matter what measures of precaution they take. In U.k there are cameras everywhere and everyone knows they are there. In my opinion, except the camera is meant to capture a secret activity, I don't think it's wrong to display parts of the monitors |

olu77:In the U.S. and U.K, there are cameras everywhere and the people are aware of it yes sir. But where do they carryout most intelligent crimes that even get so bloody and dangerous mostly? I guess your answer is as good as mine. The fact is if these cameras as well as the monitors are hidden with people to always monitor it regularly, the crimes will reduce because even the "crimestars" themselves will keep wondering how they are been cut from afar. When these monitors are exposed, one can calculate the number of cameras in the building and their positions and I tell you, they can get in and get out without notice, also without been cut. Keeping it hidden to me is the best. |

megastarjec:] Displaying the monitor as a home video as you call it is Preventive & Precautional Strategy. Lots of business do not have time for litigations and all sorts of issues associated with petty thefts. They just want people to know that they are being watched, even though the reverse is the case. So that cuts it. I think I prefer letting people know they are watched. It keeps the society safe. |

Billyonaire:Take this scenario. In one of Big Brother Africa episodes (can't remember the particular one now), one of the housemates had to tell her follows of a position where there's no hidden camera. A spot where they could get down low without been caught by the cameras. Why? simple. Because they saw the cameras and know that cameras are on them and also the positions of these cameras. If a petty thief comes into the flank and notice the monitor and cameras, i tell you, he/she will still get down there calculating the positions of the cameras and fingerup the products. I think if the cameras are hidden and monitors too. it's simple, he/she does it and get caught, tries it again and same thing, my bros, dem no go come again, 4 9ja, dem go say una dey use juju So why not jujuing it there for them to letting people beat the cameras. my thought though. |

megastarjec:In that case, It is best to keep the monitor outdoor to deter thieves from pilfering while keeping another monitor at the inner office to monitor extra hidden camera for more vigilance. Both models can be implemented. |

In a way advertising security measures is a security measure in itself. Some people automatically start acting right on seeing CCTV eg no hanky panky, theft, etc. Also there might be issues with privacy when people are unaware of CCTV s e.g no CCTV in toilets but if you urinate by the roadside and its captured on CCTV the company can't be said to be invading your privacy. Displaying CCTV is like you acknowledging before entering the premises and there could still be hidden ones. |

Keeping d security camera is like hiding ur security dog, so dat thieves won't b aware of d dog, meanwhile d main purpose is to scare them away and nt to start monitoring after d deed av been done.. dats campaign after election |

ashkenking: Yes it's placed in strategic places yet it can still be beaten. There are areas it doesn't cover in most cases and also depending on the number of the camera and the exposure of light to that area. |

Justuceleague2:CCTVs on streets is no problem and reduces crimes no doubt. My take is this, displaying the monitor that shows all the angles of the cameras in places like banks and other sensitive organizations. It's even more of a security risk to do so. petty thieves don't come to bank, if you get what i mean. |

Anywhere u go in the world provided there is CCTV, it will be boldly inscribed that "This Environment is Under CCTV Surveillance". Once you see the inscription, even without the presence of camera, you have already been discouraged from committing a crime. Is even better displaying the monitors for all to see because you never know who will be observant to see a theft going on. It could the security personnel, receptionist, customer. Mind you giving only the security the job of monitoring the cameras might not really be effective because he will never be 100% conscious althrough his duty hours. |

I stand on top fence for this argument. But both sides make sense all the same. That makes it fair. |
