Edo state Governor, Godwin Obaseki, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Taiwo Akerele, revealed that the scheme was not about the stipend attached to it but the ability of the volunteers to make maximum use of the opportunity to develop new skills and improve their livelihood and their communities.

“We are going to determine those who have gone the extra mile to bring them into the civil service to fill vacancies created by retirees,’’ Obaseki said.

One of the volunteers, Mrs. Angelina Asein, who spoke during the interactive session which held at Urhokpota Hall, in Benin City on Friday, was rewarded with N100,000 by the Governor for acknowledging that the programme had brought out her hidden teaching skills.

Mrs. Asein told the audience that she has now resolved to be a professional teacher.

Asein, a 2012 graduate of International Studies at the University of Benin, had appeared alongside Mr. Clement Ojuomajie, a computer scientist, to testify that the scheme had transformed their lives in just six months.

Meanwhile, the governor has said that the success of the first batch of Edo volunteers will determine the consideration for the placement of their colleagues in the next batch.

He asked them to be true ambassadors of the state and assured that the administration would offer every investment to ensure the success of the scheme in the state.

On his part, Mr. Afolabi Imoukhuede said the N-Power programme was a fulfilment of the campaign promises made by President Muhammadu Buhari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

“”This is a lifeline extended to you by the President,’’ he said, adding that 200,000 beneficiaries were already in the graduate scheme while non-graduates would be deployed nationwide in July/August.

Imoukhuede expressed gratitude that many volunteers in Edo had fully keyed into the scheme and were receiving their N30,000 monthly stipends but expressed surprise that 257 volunteers did not have account records.

The SSA observed that many of the volunteers in the state were deployed to urban centres depriving the rural areas of the benefits and requested the state partners to repost many to the rural areas to add value to the grassroots.

Imoukhuede later held a fact finding meeting with the state partners at the Banquet Hall of the Government House where he told them to be firm with strict supervision of the volunteers.

*STILL ON OUR BACKLOG PAYMENTS...*

We are not always happy saying this, but it is very unfortunate how the Federal Government keeps promising and failing us on the payment of our backlogs.

Few weeks ago, we were told as usual that all backlogs would be cleared by July ending; July is gone and we are now into August and no more talks about the backlogs whereas we still have a good number of volunteers who are owed some months, ranging from one to five months.

Funny but pitiable enough, they have their own subtle manner of always dousing our tensions and distracting us from focus...

Now, device collection has been introduced as a way of luring us, and the noise all over the social platforms is about device and SMS for device collection, and worst still, visits to the Npower Situation Room as if that will fetch us our stipends or any other additional bonus. Deceptively, the much acclaimed device distribution is done selectively and scantily; so far, it has been distributed to very few volunteers in two states out 36.

*What is now becoming of our backlogs...*

On a more sincere note, we demand that the Npower Team come open to us about the status and statistics of our backlogs. We would even have loved them to tell us frantically there is no more backlogs to be paid, so that we would clear our mind and concentrate only on current payments, instead of keeping giving us excuses that do not hold...

At this juncture, we wish to briefly expatiate on the meaning of backlogs as it has severally been misinterpreted...

Please, note that by backlogs, we mean arrears payments of already verified, qualified and cleared volunteers. By implication it means all recently cleared volunteers are entitled to their backlogs stipends, depending on month of verification, including those verified in December but yet to receive December stipends.

Conclusively, we call on all concerned authorities and stakeholders into the scheme to ensure the right thing is done at the right time. Every verified and qualified volunteer must be paid accordingly. In the case of no more payments of arrears, their stance must be made public, and the reason for such decision must be known as well. But in all fairness, all qualified volunteers must be equally paid without discrepancy.

Thanks.

if implemented will go a long way in reducing unemployment.

in my view and in the view of many Nigerians , any time APC tells of 'we will do' count that promise as good as CANCELLED.
