A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to vote on a particular proposal. This may result in the adoption of a new law. In some countries, it is synonymous with a plebiscite or a vote on a ballot question. Some definitions of 'plebiscite' suggest that it is a type of vote to change the constitution or government of a country. However, some other countries define it differently. For example, Australia defines 'referendum' as a vote to change the constitution, and 'plebiscite' as a vote that does not affect the constitution. In Ireland, the vote to adopt its constitution was called a "plebiscite", but a subsequent vote to amend the constitution is called a 'referendum', and so is a poll of the electorate on a non-constitutional bill. In lay man's language it a process adopted by a people to decide on a critical issue. It's usually a YES or No vote. The last two referendums conducted in the world was by Scotland and Turkey. Scotland desires to leave Great Britain to form their own country. Turkish president Erdogan conducted a referendum to give his government more absolute powers. In the case of Biafra, they desire a YES to stay and No to go vote in a referendum. The vote will be conducted for the Igbos while Nigerian government and international community are key observers. |

karllemah44:Say if the referendum is agreed, Igbos and other ethnic nationalities interested in Biafraland, will have to vote. If the simple majority of 55% goes for Biafra, then it is goodbye to Nigeria. |
