Nigeria'll Be Ahead Of France, UK Economically By 2050 If..... Soludo by bundlez: 7:47pm On Jul 01, 2017
FORMER Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Professor Chukwuma Soludo, yesterday, said that Nigeria’s economy will be ahead of France and the United Kingdom, UK, by 2050 if the country gets its acts together. *Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo Soludo made this known at an event held by the U.S. Consulate General, Lagos to mark the 241 independence anniversary of the United States of America. While acknowledging the US government’s struggle to attain her level of development today, he noted that Nigeria in the same spirit can do better. According to him “no country comes fully made; every country is a product of continuous struggle by the citizens to make a more perfect union. What creates a good society, in fact institutions don’t just emerge from heaven, and institutions are products of struggle.” He stated: “The next Nigeria must be everything that the first Nigeria has not been and that is trying to be, in a process of creating a more perfect and prosperous nation. And I will dare to say a more united country trying to forge a nation out of the disparate nationalities. This won’t be easy because it will require a lot of dialogue, contestations but I think where there’s a will, there will always be a way. We already have the human and natural resources. “ So if we get our acts together especial economically, Nigeria will by 2050 be ahead of France and the UK in terms of economy. But the big question is if we can get our acts together to begin. This is a responsibility for all Nigerians.”’

I have bad news for you Soludo, Nigeria can never attain even the slightest improvement more than Togo with the way we are going. Which greatness are you talking about when a section of the country is allowed to use their cows and trample freely on the other section's crops, eat up the crops and kill the natives with the tacit support of the government?

Nigeria is going to be competing with Somalia with the way it's going.

Nonsense! First, they started with the vision 2020, now it is 2050. I won't be surprised when they shift the goal post to year 3000.

Nigeria WILL never progress if the 'leaders' keep on shifting the goal post!

Fayose and FFK also went to visit Kanu in court. Are they biafrans? Soludo went to see Kanu to offer words of advise to the fraudster on insanity fringes in order to not continuously soil the name of the great igbo race. Soludo is an Anambra son, an Igbo man and a Nigerian.

I think people who are criticizing Soludo have misunderstood what he was saying. He wasn't predicting that the average Nigerian could have a comparable standard of living to the British and the French by 2050, he was saying that the entire Nigerian economy could be larger than that of each of those European countries, which is not as far-fetched as it sounds.

Given a current Nigerian GDP of $500 billion (vs $2.8 trillion for the UK, $2.4 trillion for France), the Nigerian economy would only have to grow at 10% per year (vs. the normal 2% long-run growth in Europe) to have surpassed both countries in total GDP in 33 years, as 8% relative growth means a relative doubling every 9 years. 10% annual growth is not outrageous, as countries like China, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan have all managed it when they were developing, so there's no fundamental reason why Nigeria couldn't manage it, given good leadership, and this is the point Soludo is really getting at: the opportunity cost, in terms of wasted growth opportunities, of doing things the way Nigeria has always done them has been tremendous.

The average Nigerian could have been 2-3x times better off by now if the country's government 30 years ago were competent and growth-oriented, rather than being just one long succession of clueless thieves in khaki who finally handed over to clueless thieves in agbada and babariga. Unfortunately most Nigerians can't conceive of politics as being about anything more than sharing out of "national cake" by the FG, and care more about the tribe and religion of those who represent them, instead of what they know and what they plan to do once in office.

We can only get it right if the oil price stays the same.
Let successive governments continue to struggle with how to properly utilize low revenues, increase revenue generation, diversify from oil & create employment & develop infrastructure.

Easy to say! You can't compare the Nigeria of today with the Nigeria of yesterday! A lot of fatal damage has been caused already!

We live in an era where empty promises are made, where achievements are done on papers, tribal/religious differences, nepotism is the order of the day, everyone wants to join politics and share the national cake, where politics is a dirty game, a nation which relies only on oil products!

Lemme watchout...
