Ab initio , there was an amalgamation in 1914 that unified a Southern Protectorate to a Northern Protectorate and the end result was a Country called Nigeria. Divide and rule was successful in the Northern Protectorate while unsuccessful in the Southern Protectorate yet the British went ahead with the marriage of inconvenience on these two strangers and make sure they are one by force. They lived amidst us trying to study the nature of these two strangers and came to a conclusion that when its time to return to Britain, power must be consolidated into the hands of the more subservient stranger of the two and there came the Independence date of October 1st, 1960 power left the British government on paper but not in reality and was transfered to a young man, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa (a Northerner) however the seed of tribalism was sown as a result of regionalism system of government that was in vogue then. Three regions were created namely; Western Region headed by a Premier (Chief Obafemi Awolowo); Eastern Region headed by a Premier (Chief Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe) and Sir Ahmadu Bello, Premier of the Northern region. There was joy all around because of the joy of a new Nation birthed in freedom. Unfortunately the joy of Nationhood turned out to be a curse as ethnic violence, political motivated arsons and wanton killings as a result of a rigged electoral process. The resultant effects brought in the khaki boys (then Nigerian Army) that were hitherto relegated to the barracks by some group of revolutionary-minded young officers of mainly Eastern region extraction and many casualties were recorded. However, when the record of the fallen leaders were taken it was observed that few Eastern region leaders were spared while those of the other regions were killed this made the media of the time to brand the military putsch an "Igbo Coup". Eventually their was a retaliatory coup from the Northern officers to avenge for their slain leaders in the first coup which spread to the streets where Igbo civilians residing in the North were massively killed for a length of 4 months which leave the question: could this purge of these innocent civilians be part of the coup by the northern officers? This scenario prompted the Igbo officers, with their professionals and politicians to sit down and deliberate whether Nigeria is still home to them or they should leave to chart a new course for their future, which they named Biafra. Nevertheless, after much ado to be considered as law abiding citizens in a Country that is now looking beyond killing Igbo officers as a result of the retaliatory coup by northern officers but still killing innocent Igbo citizens then Biafra was officially born and secession was not negotiable. Despite the series of meetings to pacify the Igbo representatives to see reason to stay fell on deaf ears, Nigeria headed by a 32-year old Yakubu Gowon and Biafra headed by a 33-year old Odumegwu Ojukwu decided to test their military might at the battle field. The battle started in 1967 and ended January 1970 with the land locked core igboland bombarded and destroyed beyond human imaginations by the Nigerian troop but the coastal part of the Eastern region then was not as battered. Three million casualties went with the war and now its time for reconciliation to pacify the vanguished side. The premise of my title to this thread lies on The Marshal Plan drafted to integrate Biafra and Biafrans into the Nigeria family so that we can be put back in the pre independence unification spirit. This Plan came about with the 3Rs; Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reintegration. The truth is if the tenets of the 3Rs were duly implemented within the framework of time it was programmed to run, we won't be talking of another Biafra today, another young Turk, Nnamdi Kanu wouldn't have bothered Nigerians with his Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) again. However, Gowon failed the Igbos in not inplenting fully the programme of the 3Rs to make our Biafran brothers feel at home once more and somehow the psychological trauma of what transpired during the war which was pure genocide started taking its toll on generations to generations and here we are 50 years after the war, the Igbo's cannot boast of ruling over the Country we made them believe they have a stake in. Truly, our leaders waited too long in fixing the polemics and mending fences when the time was ripe for it (between 1970 - 1975). That moment of grace to show love towards the vanquished passed us by and like the proverbial ostrich, we buried our head in the sand, wishing it away? No, it won't go away. Its a pity we (Nigerians) planted and watered Biafra to maturity. I hope its not too late, but something keeps telling me that it's too late. The truth is, WE (VICTORS) WAITED TOO LONG after the war!. |

ScotsReferendum:You clearly miss the point of this analysis which states that the 3Rs (Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Reintegration) initiated by the Gowon Administration were not fully implemented to calm nerves and prevent future holocaust but were neglected for other frivolous activities within the time frame of the 3Rs implementation which now makes Biafra a case study now. |

Ratello:You are the one who don't understand what I wrote God gave Nigerians enough time to act like human beings towards the Biafrans but they failed. Therefore, God has resolved to resurrect Biafra. That God is not interested in Restructuring and Presidency |
