Wimbledon 2017 Betting Tips – Winner & Each Way Predictions

Let’s begin by taking a look at how the men’s event is shaping up.
Men’s Singles Preview & Tips

Top 16 Men’s Seeds:

1. Andy Murray (GB)
2. Novak Djokovic (Ser)
3. Roger Federer (Swi)
4. Rafael Nadal (Spa)
5. Stan Wawrinka (Swi)
6. Milos Raonic (Can)
7. Maran Cilic (Cro)
8. Dominic Thiem (Aut)
9. Kei Nishikori (Jap)
10. Alexander Zverev (Ger)
11. Tomas Berdych (Cze)
12. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Fra)
13. Grigor Dimitrov (Bul)
14. Lucas Pouille (Fra)
15. Gael Monfils (Fra)
16. Gilles Muller (Lux)

Current Champion: Andy Murray (GB) – Top Seed for 2017.

The first thing to consider when wondering who could be the next Wimbledon champion is to look back over the years to see who has won the majority of Grand Slam events.

Incredibly, since the Australian Open of 2005, only two players outside the current top five seeds at Wimbledon have won any Grand Slam event. That was Juan Martin del Potro at the US Open in 2009 and Marin Cilic at the same event in 2014.

This means that in every other Grand Slam event since one of either Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray or Wawrinka have claimed the titles. That is an extraordinary level of dominance but seeing as these five players remain the dominant force in the men’s game, it seems almost unthinkable that one of them will not be lifting the trophy on the 15th June.

Who’s In With A Shout?

Murray is the current champion but he has struggled for form in recent times and was sensationally knocked out of the Queens tournament by a qualifier. Djokovic too is struggling to find his best form, albeit he did look stronger in his last tournament on grass. Wawrinka is not a grass specialist and the surface doesn’t really suit his game, which is why of the five players, I’d discount him from winning first.

In truth it is the Old Guard of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who are the most in form players at the moment. Nadal was superb at the French Open (which Federer sat out) but Federer was ominously good in his warm up win in Halle and it is clear he has prioritised what would be an eighth Wimbledon win this year over the French Open.

Big servers, such as Milos Raonic, Marin Cilic and Juan Martin del Potro could go deep in the tournament, but it is hard to see them having the all round game to beat any of the top four on their day, but of this group is is perhaps del Potro who has the best all round game to succeed here, but there are nagging concerns about his level of fitness, especially in five-set games over two weeks.
Men’s Singles Winner & Each Way Tips

Winner Tip: Having taken everything into consideration, I think the smart money here is on Roger Federer to claim his eighth Wimbledon title. The Swiss ace looked outstanding in Halle on his warm up for the event and having missed the French Open, he is rested and focused on securing what would be his second Grand Slam event of the year. You can back Federer to win at a best price of 23/10 with Boylesports.

Where To Bet:

New customers at Betfair can get 40/1 on Rodger Federer (max bet £1, winnings as free bets)
New customers at 888Sport can get 20/1 on Rodger Federer (max bet £5, winnings as free bets)

Each Way Tip: For an outside bet, if del Potro was in better physical shape I would have picked the Argentinean, but despite ruling him out as a winner of the event, I think as an each way bet the 33/1 you can get with Betvictor (bet £10 get £40 bonus) on Stan Wawrinka as an each way bet to make the final represents superb value for money.
Women’s Singles Preview & Tips

Top 16 Women’s Seeds:

1. Angelique Kerber (Ger)
2. Simona Halep (Rom)
3. Karolina Pliskova (Cze)
4. Elina Svitolina (Ukr)
5. Caroline Wozniacki (Den)
6. Johanna Konta (GB)
7. Svetlana Kuznetsova (Rus)
8. Dominika Cibulkova (Svk)
9. Agnieszka Radwanska (Pol)
10. Venus Williams (US)
11. Petra Kvitova (Cze)
12. Kristina Mladenovic (Fra)
13. Jelena Ostapenko (Lat)
14. Garbine Muguruza (Spa)
15. Elena Vesnina (Rus)
16. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Rus)

Current Champion: Serena Williams (US) – Not competing due to pregnancy

Ever since Serena Williams announced she was taking a break from competitive tennis to give birth, the women’s game has seen something of a power vacuum at the top of the game. No one woman has come through to dominate the game in quite the same way Williams did up until the end of the Australian Open in January.

This was clearly demonstrated in the French Open last month when unseeded Jelena Ostapenko surprised many by claiming the title. Her defeat over Simona Halep, was a shock but it is indicative of the fluid situation in women’s tennis at the moment.

Who are the contenders?

In such an open field, my gut feeling is that players that have decent records on grass should come to the fore. That means Angelique Kerber, who was a runner up to Serena Williams last year, may well feel this is her best opportunity to add Wimbledon to the list of Slam events that she has already won. Karolina Pliskova has been arguably the most consistent player on tour since Williams’ semi-retirement and she is the favourite with many.

I must admit, I do think it is hard for some of the more clay or hard court specialists to transform their game onto grass easily which makes me think that outside of those two players it may well be Britain’s Johanna Konta who stands a good chance of becoming the first British female winner of the event since Virginia Wade back in 1977. You can’t discount Heather Watson too, who despite being unseeded, has produced some outstanding performances in the warm up event in Eastbourne this week to reach the semi finals.

Petra Kvitova, who is still recovering from a nasty hand injury, has won this event twice before and given her incredible comeback, she will be a crowd favourite, but she isn’t quite at the level she was when she won this title in the past and even as the 11th seed, I think she won’t quite have the same level of competitiveness as some of the other girls.

There are strong arguments for a number of players ranked outside the top 16 with the likes of Sloane Stevens, Madison Keys and Eugenie Bouchard all drawing attention in what is likely to be one of the most keenly contested women’s singles tournaments in living memory.
Women’s Singles Tips & Predictions

Picking a winner here is tough given how open this tournament is, it is almost the exact opposite of how the men’s tournament looks, where the winner seems likely to come from just four possible players.

Winner Tip: My choice here is perhaps the obvious one and that is the current World Number 1, Angelique Kerber. The German has a superb all round game and she reached the final last year, only to be defeated by Williams. With her main opponent out of the running and with her being well-rested ahead of the week, I think she can tackle the win here.

You can currently back Anelique Kerber at a best price of 20/1 with Coral.

Each Way Tip: A decent outside bet could well be her compatriot Sabine Lisicki. She too is a former finalist at Wimbledon and is regarded by many as something of a grass court specialist in the women’s game. She may be past her very best, but in what is a very open field, she has the pedigree to perhaps get deep into the tournament and maybe even claim a finals spot.

You can back Lisicki each way at odds of 80/1 with BetVictor.
