Compared to one teacher like that whom I met during my NYSC, this is nothing na. That teacher was practically teaching the JSS 3 students pornography; describing the whole sex scenario, talking raw and mentioning all the vital parts without regards to the sensitivity and age of the kids he was teaching. |

stephanie11:In as much as sex education is good, we should be mindful of the extent we use certain words like masturbation. From what I can see in that text book, the author was talking about mutual masturbation and not just masturbation. What he meant was mutual fingering but there is no good word to replace that, hence mutual masturbation. masturbation should not even be included as means of sexual abstinence. Because if anybody attempt it, it may form an habit. It will take only the grace of God to be delivered from such devilish habit. I am a victim of it. But I thanked God today that I am free from the sin of masturbation that I was in for about 10years. It pays to get close to God. Plse let's always teach on the negative effects of masturbation to scare and keep people away from it. God bless us all |

tobtap: But a JSS1 student is not too young to learn about masturbation. They are largely already exposed to worst things on TV so, it is better to prepare them now. We cannot continue to pretend that JSS1 kids are still babies. The world is evolving and even children younger than 10 do not like the idea of being talked down at. It is not easy to prepare a book for kids. It takes a lot of observation and not just knowledge of the subject. That is why child psychology is compulsory in colleges of education. 1 Like |

Secretario:hahahaha i noticed this thing you said recently. people fight and quarrel a lot on my street. but there is only one man they all avoid quarrelling with because he is a native doctor. when i did my youth service in a secondary school in ijebu, i stopped flogging one boy the day i learnt his dad is a native doctor and he is an apprentice to his dad. i was like "wharrrt!! you guys didnt tell me all this while" nigerians subconsciously dread traditional people. i usually see drivers putting their native doctor Id card in a place police can easily see it and allow them pass. abeg we are better off without those things ooohhh |

gp6liveth: Let me be frank with you, the topic is appropriate for that age and you can't teach it properly without those details. If parents don't want, they should just ask that the topic be removed from the syllabus. You can't allow "kissing" and have them throw away "masturbation". |

In2systemsTech: You don't understand... The thing is what this book in essence is saying is for JS1 kids to go ahead and fornicate... Imagine a JS1 boy and girl "mutually masturbating", is that not d same thing and giving them the go ahead to penetrate each other... The book clearly says mutual masturbation!!!... Dat should ring alarm bells... Again, should we be exposing and teaching JS1 children how to achieve sexual pleasure? Please... I know these days, some of these are already into these things, but we shouldn't make it acceptable by now teaching it to them |

Some people and their level of understanding is very very low. Is there any way this topic could be taught in detail without mentioning masturbation? Its like saying if one lists all the sins people commit and how they are committed, more people will then decide to commit sin. We still have a long way to go 1 Like |

ngolokante: I understand perfectly well, during my secondary school days an only daughter died while committing abortion so that his father will not find out... Her father was filled with tears, he went to the daughters corpse and told her that she should have had the baby, that she knows she is the only one he has.... Now imagine what could have been averted if this was taught to her on time... Please what's the average age of a JS 1 student and why shouldn't they learn it on time so that they don't fall for peer pressure ? |

Franzinni: I, Prof. Femi say it is wrong. Wrong to teach 10 year olds MUTUAL masturbation. As I said on a previous post, sex education is a nuanced subject, and textbooks like this use the blunt trauma of a cudgel where the precision of a scalpel is needed. |

9th June, 2017. The Honourable Minister of Education, The Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Secretariat Complex, Shehu Shagari Way, Central Area, P.M.B. 146, Garki, Abuja. Dear Sir, OUR COMPLAINT AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE IMMORAL CONTENTS IN OUR CURRICULA We, the Parent-Teacher Association of Crescent College, Victoria Island, Lagos, are constrained to bring to your notice that we have observed that it has become the tradition of the National Examinations Council (NECO) to recommend junior secondary literature textbooks that fall short of moral standards that our nation’s educational system should be promoting. More specifically, the books are nothing but a means of glamorising acts of indecency such as rape, violence, kidnapping, girl defilement and sexualisation of knowledge. The books expose the vulnerable and unsuspecting minds of 10-12 year olds to amorous and deviant practices that can in turn breed rapists, cultists, homosexuals and kidnappers in youngsters. The prevalence of cases of rape among secondary students in recent times cannot be unconnected with the urge to experiment with the experience they have from such books. For example, The Precious Child, by Queen O. Okweshine, gave a vivid description of a young lady’s body as follows: If only I can find a sweet 16 to cool me down. But these eaglets with their fronts and backs fully set. Waaoo, those tender breasts that gyrate in provocating rhythm which seem to say (pushes his chest forward) ‘I swear to God.’ (page 56) In the same vein, another book, ‘The Tears of a Bride’ authored by Oyekunle Oyedeji, an accountant, is another reason to make a responsive and responsible parent feel concerned about the kind of adults schooling is grooming their children to be. The story is centred on two characters, Ajibike and Akofe, who are passionately in love, with Araba, the staff bearer, not allowing them to be. The author throws caution and modesty to the dogs as reflected in the following excerpts: 1. Lights open on Akofe and Ajibike lying criss-cross on the ground with Ajibike’s head on Akofe’s chest and his arms wrapped around her. Akofe’s eyes are closed as he savours the splendour of the moment. His index finger runs through her body, drawing imaginary lines with its tip. Ajibike curiously raises her head from his chest to look into his face, only to discover a wide smile is playing therein. (page 10) 2. Tell them also that the breast of a woman in a man’s mouth tastes better than the best of palm wine. (page 86) 3. Araba comes out of his house bare to the waist and readjusts his wrapper. Romoke cries weakly as she comes out from the house holding her wrapper to her chest to prevent it from falling off her body. Araba has just defiled her. (page 91) Furthermore, the tradition of literary immorality has recently graduated to the level of Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) as observable from the blameable content of its recommended Use of English text for the 2017 UTME, In Dependence. The book is succinctly described by the author, thus: It is the story of two people struggling to find themselves and each other – a story of passion and idealism, courage and betrayal, and the universal desire to fall madly, deep, in love. Nothing short of this enamoured description of love is depicted by the storyline. In fact, our students who sat the current UTME found it morally distasteful, to say the least. OUR REQUESTS In view of the negative effects of books like these on the morals of our children and the family system, the foundation of our society, we, therefore, request as follows: 1. There should be objective content analysis of books meant for learners’ consumption, before they are certified fit for school use by the appropriate organ of the ministry. 2. We request that such books (even as they affect other subjects) are withdrawn from use immediately considering the extent of their incalculable potential damage to the youths now and in future. 3. To forestall a recurrence, we demand that the process that led to the adoption of the books is investigated and whosoever is found culpable is sanctioned appropriately. 4. We implore the Ministry of Education to do everything possible within its powers to put a stop to the use of such books immediately. 5. We implore the Ministry to recommend, henceforth, books that teach values such as honesty, integrity, decency, hard work and selflessness, which seek to promote humanity in our youngsters, in the interest of our nation. In conclusion, we are hopeful that our concerns on the textbooks and some perverted aspects of the curricula would be given a listening ear. As a parent and a role model, we eagerly look forward to your urgent decision and action in addressing these worries. Thank you in anticipation of your favourable response. Yours faithfully, Mrs. Fatima Mahmud-Oyekan Head of Crescent Schools Alhaji Aliyu Gudaji Chairman, Parent-Teacher Association |

Teaching JSS1 students on sex education is not wrong. In fact that's the right age or even before. Secondly, masturbation as a means of sexual satisfaction is far more preferred than sleeping with multiple partners. And if my daughter or son has a high sex drive - I will advise masturbation than unwanted pregnancy, STDS or messing up their reputation as sex freaks. That's my parenting idea on this - You are free to choose yours! I think it's about time we quit these religious crap and deal with issues squarely. 1 Like 1 Share |
