A socio-political organisation, National Council of Tiv Youths, has said that Benue State lost over 6, 000 persons and N5bn in the last four years to attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

President of the group, Dr. John Akperashi, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, lambasted the Fulani for placing more value on cows than human lives.



He said, “It is almost four years now that the problem of Fulani herdsmen has been going on in Benue State. If we are to make a monetary demand, it will be unquantifiable because we have lost over N5bn.

“We have also lost over 6,000 people in Benue State alone due to the massive destruction of properties, invasion of farmlands and raping of women by these herdsmen.

“We have yet to find a solution to the problem and that is why we are asking for a public hearing on the bill against open grazing.

“The Benue State House of Assembly also invited people to bring their own memoranda and there was a public debate. At the end, they saw that what will be a lasting solution to the problem was to pass into law the anti-open grazing bill, which we are all supporting.”

Akperashi said the bill against open grazing does not mean that they were chasing Fulani herdsmen out of Benue.

He said anybody that must stay in the state must be ready to abide by the rules and regulations that the government and people of Benue had put in place.

And when we raise our voice, they call us names.

And if they don't t want to listen now, our attitude and position about Nigeria will also change.

I believe this kind of disposition by Nigerians is what must have led to the current agitation in the South East.
