''Should i switch it on or leave it?'' K.C asked, waving his phone sideways continuously.

Since the previous day that he had almost said ''I love you'' to Dami, his phone has been switched off. He did it to avoid questions from her.

Atleast he would have a my-phone-was-switched-off excuse to give to her.

''I won't switch it on, atleast not until I have a reasonable excuse to give her for ending the call just like that'' he adviced himself and threw the phone aside, not minding if his family members would try to reach him.

Nate drove into Jane's compound, with worries and concern all over his face.

Tuesdays, were always very boring for him since he normally deal with all the challenging works on mondays and during the weekends.

With everything happening around him, he didn't even bother returning to work the previous day nor did he think of going to work at all when he woke up, all he could think about was Jane and her well being.

''Good morning Jane'' he greeted as soon as he entered unannounced.

''Good morning'' she replied weakly and he pitied her.

The previous day, she told him about herself and about her family members and he couldn't help but wonder why there are so many monsters in human form.

She told him of the car accident that killed her father and how her father's brothers took all their properties simply because her mum didn't give birth to a male child for her late husband.

''Jane take heart, it's okay, when one door closes another one open'' He assured her and walked over to her.

She stood up from the couch and sat, facing him.

''Thanks Nate, God bless you'' she smiled and he admired her courage; despite everything she could still smile.

A young man came into the sitting room carrying a can of water and a glass.

''Good morning'' the young man greeted Nate.

''Good morning'' Nate replied, scrutinizing him.

''My mother's body will be laid to rest on Saturday, I don't want any delay of any kind'' Jane said to the young man.

''Isn't that too early'' the young man asked.

''No, it's not, If not for people's mouth, she would have been buried immediately'' She replied still looking at the young man and totally ignoring Nate.

''If you say so'' the young man shrugged and sat in the chair opposite Jane and Nate's.

Jane turned to Nate and gave him a weak smile ''sorry, this is my sweetheart, Benjamin '' she replied pointing at the young man.

So she has a boyfriend?

Nate couldn't even begin to explain what he felt the moment she said ''sweetheart'' all he knew was that, if he had a gun in his hands, he would have shot Jane's so-called swetheart in the head.

Tuesdays were always very hectic for Ken, lot's of piled up work from the previous week, but this week, he was far from concentrating.

Too many problems at a time!

He's lost so much weight to the extent that concerned workers were beginning to question him,

Why won't he loose weight? No one to cook for him anymore, he's practically living like a bachelor, eating once or twice a day, unlike when Vicky was still with him, then, he usually ate to his satisfaction and she always makes sure to pack delicious food for him for lunch.


His door opened and he looked up with angerily, wondering why Tessy and Chioma would not inform him before allowing someone in.

''Not you again! What are you doing here?'' he asked, yelling..

''Mr. Kennedy, I will keep coming, until you sign this divorce papers'' Barrister Edwin replied bringing out the papers from his suitcase.

''Why is the Barrister so serious about this divorce of a thing, even Vicky isn't this serious'' Ken thought.

An inner voice Whispered, ''She might be moving on with the lawyer''
instantly, he began praying against it.

''Give me the damn divorce papers'' he shouted and stretched forth his hand.

He knew better than to continue persisting, Vicky always gets what she wants one way or another.

Atleast he now knows where she stays!

The Barrister handed the divorce papers to him with a smile and Ken rolled his eyes at him.

''What?'' he screamed, the moment he looked at the papers.

''Mr Kennedy, any problem?'' Barrister Edwin asked.

''Yeah, of course'' he replied frowning '' what's the meaning of all this T and C'' he asked pushing the papers aside.

''Terms and conditions''

''Mr Edwin, I know the full meaning of T and C, it's just that I don't get all that's written here''

''The terms and conditions of the divorce''

''read this number one'' he said loudly, tapping the papers with his fingers.

The Barrister came closer and peered at the paper ''Yes, that's correct, my client does not what to have anything to do with you as soon as the papers are signed.

''Okay'' Ken nodded frowning ''Then read the last one'' he said, with anger.

''that too!'' The Barrister answered with a tight smile and Ken grimaced.

''It was modified, your ex-wife, my client also wants 70 percent of your properties and everything that you own.''

''Happy Birthday!'' Dami shouted as soon as K.C opened the door.

K.C leaned against the doorpost smiling at her and at how funny she could be at times, she didn't even allow the day to break properly before coming to wish him a happy Birthday, but still he was glad she came.

''Happy Birthday'' she said again ''Here take this'' she handed him a birthday pack and he opened it almost immediately with smiles.

His smile instantly turned into surprise the moment he say what she got for him.

''What?'' he asked, holding up the gift.

''Euphoria Intense'' she replied, tilting her head.

''How did you know the cologne I use?''

''Oh! I can smell Euphoria Intense cologne by Calvin Klein from a hundred miles away, it's also my dad's cologne'' she informed him and he couldn't help but grin.

''I'm grateful, thanks alot'' he said and hugged her--a hug that was supposed to end within seconds, but it didn't end until Dami began to shake uncomfortably.

He stepped back a little embarrassed for letting the hug last that long.

''Come in'' he said to her and pushed open the door for her to enter.

She entered and he closed the door behind him.

''Thanks for this wonderful birthday gift'' he said to her and she laughed lightly while saying ''You deserve more''

Soon, they were settled on the couch few inches away from each other, talking and laughing in excitement.

''...My very troublesome younger sisters, both called me at exactly 12:05AM to wish me a happy Birthday'' he said yawning.

''You're lucky to have them, mine can set the roof on fire with just a word, but I love her just the way she is''

''I don't have a choice? do I? I have to love them and tolerate them'' he said and she smiled.

''yeah! It's not like we both have any choice, we can't possibly throw them out...

Suddenly, he found himself loosing focus, he couldn't hear her voice anymore, he was mesmerized by her lips and the way it moved when she talks, the desire to kiss her and taste that lips overwhelmed him and blocked out every other thoughts and feelings from his mind.

When the desire became too strong for him to handle, he finally succumbed and closed the gap between them, but when he made to kiss her, she closed her eyes and turned sideways.

That singular act knocked some sense into him.

''what the heck!'' he mumured and rosed up, he looked at her and she refused to meet his gaze.

He didn't know what to do, if he should apologize to her or just run--run far, far away from her.

''Give me a minute, i want to take you out and please don't say no, I know it's abit too early for taking out and all that, but remember, it's my Birthday'' he said and walked away before she could reply.

Once inside his bedroom, he began hitting the wall with his fist and that lasted for a while before he went to his wardrobe and started searching for clothes to wear.

He was in a bad state but he still congratulated himself for keeping calm and managing the situation, atleast, if they were in a public place, he would have better control of his emotions and his body parts.

''Vicky, I'm sorry'' Ken apologized.

He was on his knees before his wife once more, pleading with her to forgive him.

Unfortunately, Vicky wasn't even looking at him, all her attention--well, almost all was on the television, focused on a film; Race 2, which was being showed by Zee World.

''Vicky, please forgive me, I still love you very much, I'm sorry for everything'' he apologized again and when she ignored him, he moved closer to her and tapped her leg gently.

''What? Do you want to cripple me?'' she asked fiercely.

''Sweetheart, I'm sorry, please forgive me''

''Ken, I have told you times without number that you should stop coming here, well, I don't blame you, I blame Queen for not having any control over her mouth'' she turned to him and when their eyes met, she muttered ''I will never forgive you Ken''

He shut his eyes, hating what he was about to say, but if that's the only option he has left, then he has no choice, touching her legs gently, he said ''Vicky, I don't deserve to be forgiven but please, do it for the sake of our unborn baby''

Her expression softened for a while before she used her leg to push his hands away ''My baby Ken'' She replied, pointing at herself ''Ken, my baby. You can go to Kath so you two can have yours, but this one I'm carrying is my and mine alone''

''Vicky, I'm sor...

''Ken, leave now or I will also pour hot water on your face, if you don't leave'' she retorted and he stood up gingerly.

''It's alright, I will leave but don't expect me to ever sign those divorce papers, never!'' he said, walking towards the door.

''Ken don't push me. You must sign them o, or I will be forced to commit murder''

He walked away without saying another word to her, knowing that she was punishing him with the harsh divorce Terms and Conditions, a punishment which he deserves, and the best thing to do at the moment, was to give her space.

Nate was late for the burial.

Blame the bad roads!

He had set out early for the burial of Mrs. Theresa Omeje; Jane's mother, only for him to be delayed by a driver of a mini van who took the wrong bend and got stuck causing traffic congestion on the small road.

As he walked towards the cemetry, he saw Jane on black from head to toe standing close to her mother's open casket.

Her mouth was moving but he didn't hear what she was saying until he got closer to the small crowd and realized she was singing, a very emotional song he has heard so many times but had no idea who sang it.

Nate stood behind everyone, watching her sing and cry her eyes out. For once in his life, he wished he had supernatural powers or even wished he was a powerful man of God who could cure any disease or raise up the dead.

''...And, now I have to move on, I'm trying to be strong, I have unfilled dreams inside of me, I'll pick the left of myself up, I'm gonna lift my head up high.

Nate could no longer stand and watch her cry, the sight was too heart-rending for him to continue looking at, so he went over to the front where she stood and drew her into his arms, not minding what the crowd of more that 30 people would say or do.

She held unto him tightly as if her life depended on it.

He looked at the lifeless body of her mother lying in the casket and he almost started to cry also.

He slowly turned away and began patting her back gently with more determination than ever, to make her happy and put smiles on her face for as long as he could.
