Innoson Motors lays off 50 percent of workers

Nigeria’s pioneer indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited, has laid off about 50 percent of its work force, News Express learnt.

A source close to the company blamed the development on a combination of declining patronage by government, high cost of the dollar and difficulty in procuring foreign exchange for imported vehicle components.

Whereas the immediate past Federal Government of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan and Anambra State Government under Mr. Peter Obi encouraged and patronised Innoson, the reverse is the case presently, with the incumbent Anambra State Government under the watch of Chief Willie Obiano preferring to import vehicles from the USA and elsewhere.

“Things are no longer the same at Innoson and the vehicle plant at Nnewi has laid off about 50% of the workers,” the source said.

The source also disclosed that Innoson Technical & Industrial Co. Ltd., producers of motorcycle parts and plastic products, has cut staff by some 25%. He said that Company Chairman, Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, started the retrenchment exercise from the Emene plant in Enugu State.

The source told News Express: “Mr. Chukwuma addressed the staff late in July and announced that because of the bad shape of the economy, 25% of the staff would have to go home and wait till December when they would be recalled if things improved.  The next day the list of affected staff was released and they had to go home after collecting their July salary. Of course, no one has been recalled because, rather than improve, the economy has become even worse since then.”

You think it is by Oju lasan that they are so desperate about seaport and coastline?
They are importers of substandard goods from China, Thailand, Vietnam etc. Mostly East Asia.
And they don't even bring in raw materials for further production like Yoruba importers and Dangote do, they bring whole made products into the market, adding no value to the economy in the process.

Close NPA for one month and see Igbos become destitute in 1 month. They produce Nothing.

Innoson too does not manufacture vehicles or buses from scratch. They import the parts as CKD (completely knocked down) components and weld them into shape, before assembling them into vehicles. Please be guided!

THE Anambra State Governor, Mr. Willie Obiano, has approved N13 billion (about $61 million) to bring investments into commercial poultry farming as part of his efforts to turn the state into a model for agriculture.

Signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Governor’s Lodge with Lynden Integrated Farms Ltd for the establishment of a modern poultry production and processing farm in the state, Governor Obiano emphasised that agriculture remains the number one pillar in his economic agenda.

He said that the proposed ultra-modern poultry farm, which will be located on a seven hectares of land at Igbariam, would generate no fewer than 250 jobs during construction and 200 permanent jobs as well as 2,000 indirect jobs subsequently.

According to the governor: “At the moment, all the day-old chicks sold in the South-East are brought in from Oyo State. We want to change that. We want all the day-old chicks sold in this area to come from Anambra State.”

I visited Zartech Ltd at Oyo state some weekends ago and there were several trailers packed at their logistics/hatchery unit fully loaded with day old chicks with plate numbers from anambra state which signify they still depend and would continue to depend on SW for poultry production.
