Death comes to everyone and everything in time. There are several reasons people die – disease, old age, murder, and accidents. Though we are well aware of how frequently people die, we always find ourselves shocked when we do hear about someone’s death or see someone die. Even though no death could ever be considered lucky, some people’s deaths are worse than others, especially those who could have just avoided their fate by inches. Here are some people who died the unluckiest deaths.

1. In 1985, a New Orleans man drowned at a pool party attended by over a 100 lifeguards celebrating a summer with no drownings.

The party was hosted by the city’s lifeguards at the New Orleans Recreation Department Center to celebrate a summer season with no drownings, a first back then. It was held at the end of July that year when most of the city’s recreation centers were closed. The party was attended by around 200 people, half of whom were lifeguards. After the party was finished, four lifeguards who were cleaning the pool found the fully clothed body of 31-year-old Jerome Moody at the bottom of the pool’s deep end.

2. A man in Arizona died while shooting a 26-f00t-high saguaro cactus to topple it over. A 500-pound arm of the cactus fell on him crushing him to death.
In 1982, David Grundman and James Joseph Suchochi went to the desert two miles north of Arizona’s Highway 74, west of Lake Pleasant. At first, Grundman shot a small saguaro so many times that it fell down to the ground. He next took on a 26- foot-high saguaro, which was estimated to be at least a hundred years old, and that led to his demise. Saguaro cacti live for up to 150 to 200 years. Some are known to live up to 300 years as well. They grow up to 60 feet and can weigh as much as eight tons (16,000 pounds). The arm of the cactus that fell on Grundman weighed 500 pounds

3. A Thai woman accidentally slipped on mud, grabbed a live wire and was electrocuted to death. The same day, her sister was showing her neighbors how it happened, slipped in the mud, grabbed the same live wire and was also electrocuted death.
In April 1991, in a rural area located 60 miles north of Bangkok, 57-year-old Yooket Paen was walking in the farmyard when the accident happened. Her 52-year- old sister, Yooket Pan, was showing her neighbors later in the day, how the accident happened, and she herself underwent the same set of events which led to her death the same way.

4. After a plane crash-landed in San Francisco, a 16-year-old girl survived only to be run over and killed by one of the rescue fire trucks.
On July 6, 2013, Ye Mengyuan was traveling on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 with a group of 35 teachers and students from Jiangshan, China to California when the accident happened. After the plane crash- landed and caught fire at San Francisco airport, Mengyuan was flung out of the plane. She died of multiple blunt injuries after being struck by one of the aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles. She was lying on the ground and possibly covered in foam which was being sprayed on the plane to douse the fire when it happened.

5. After hearing a scream, a man in Florida ran to his brother’s bedroom to find the entire room swallowed by a 30-foot-deep sinkhole along with the brother. They were never able to recover the body.
In 2013, the bedroom of a one-story, 1970s house in Seffner, Florida, a Tampa suburb, collapsed into a sinkhole 20 to 30 feet across and almost 30 feet deep, taking a man named Jeff Bush along with it. His brother, Jeremy Bush, tried to rescue him by digging into the rubble until the police came and pulled him out as the floor was still collapsing. The rescuers couldn’t go into the sinkhole as it was still too dangerous. Though it started as a rescue operation, it soon became a search for the body as the monitoring equipment did not record any signs of anyone alive. However, they could never find a body.

6. A man who survived to suffer from PTSD after the burning and sinking of a ship in 1871, died 41 years later when, finally overcoming his fears and nightmares, he sailed again on RMS Titanic .
Ramon Artagaveytia of Uruguay was one of the 65 passengers to survive the fire and sinking of the ship America on December 24, 1871, carrying 164 passengers. He escaped by jumping off the ship and swimming for his life. According to a letter he wrote to his cousin, Enrique Artagaveytia, he suffered from nightmares and woke up in the middle of the night hearing screams of: “Fire! Fire! Fire!” Even during the simplest of trips, he would stand on the deck wearing his lifebelt out of fear. On April 10, 1912, he boarded the Titanic. In one of his letters, he expressed the assurance he felt because they had wireless telegraph on board. He felt that unlike the time nobody could see their light signals when America sank, they could communicate with the whole world instantly. However, the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, and Artagaveytia was one of the 1,500 who died.

7. In 2002, a man was thrown down into an 18-foot-deep manhole during a fight. The tunnel had hot water and steam of over 300 degrees F which cooked him through while he was still alive.

In December 2002, a man named Michael Wright, thinking his bartender friend, Sean Doyle, was hitting on his girlfriend, got into a fight with him. According to witnesses, Wright then threw Doyle down an open manhole as he was screaming, “No, don’t break my legs!” The manhole was 18 feet deep and, unfortunately, boiling water was pouring into it from a broken main. Doyle was reaching up and screaming for help. As the temperature in the tunnel was at least 300 degrees F (148 degrees C), the paramedics could not climb down to give help for four hours. By the time they could get him out, he was dead and his body temperature was 125 degrees F (52 degrees C). His skin had peeled off and his internal organs were cooked through. As he had no head trauma or other injuries, he was thought to have been fully conscious while he was boiled to death.

8. Three people died inside a flight simulator in a flight safety building at the Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport, Kansas, when a real plane crashed into it.

The 53-year-old pilot, Mark Goldstein, was a retired air traffic controller who had been recognized for his safety efforts by the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. He later became a contract pilot and was ferrying this plane from Wichita to Mena, Arkansas when the plane lost an engine during takeoff. The two- story building of the Flight Saftey Cessna Learning Center at Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport had around 100 people in it at the time of the crash. Three people who were in the flight simulator at that time were found dead along with the pilot whose body was found on the roof.

9. In 1989, a convicted murderer who avoided the electric chair died of electrocution on his toilet when he bit into the wire of his earphones while trying to connect it to his TV.

In 1983, a 22-year-old man named Michael Anderson Godwin was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at the Central Correctional Institution in South Carolina. An earlier verdict for his crime was to have him electrocuted, but it was overturned on appeal. Six years later, he was sitting on his toilet apparently trying to connect his earphones to his television set when he bit into the wire and was electrocuted to death.

10. A Brazilian man died when one night while sleeping alongside his wife when a cow fell through their corrugated roof and landed on top of him.

The cow was believed to have escaped from a nearby farm, climbed a hill, and then onto the house which stands next to the steep side of the hill. The house had a corrugated roof, and it gave way under the weight of the one and a half ton cow which then fell on 45-year-old Joao Maria de Souza. He was then taken to a hospital as he had a fractured leg but no other obvious injuries. However, he died of internal bleeding while still waiting to see the doctor.
