Chapter 21.


The cruel sun beat down on the young soldiers as they moved towards their camp, it was one malevolent eye unblinking and the sky was its co-conspirator with not even a wisp of cloud to soften the harsh rays.. The lizards took shelters in the shadows of the rocks where the sand was not hot enough to roast them alive, but there wasn't shade large enough for the young army as they jogged on to their camp which was still miles away. Each step into the searing sand, the air was thick and hazy, each breath like drowning in larva..

Three days had passed since Jason touched down in Rigestan, Afghanistan. The country located within South Asia and Central Asia.. Rigestan, also known as country of sand, was a sandy desert with ridges and small isolated hills of red sand. The sand, ridges and dunes, ranching heights of between fifty and hundred feet, jason had been told that the land was full of wild animals especially snakes, and vultures. It was known as the land of hell.

Jason jogged on as the wind stirs up the wispy sun and the sun's never ending rays beat down on him mercilessly. Salty seat rolled off his nose and stinged his eyes. His clothing was overwhelmingly hot and sticky. The stiff, dry desert breeze blew sand into his eyes and made his hair stiff with salts. His tongue felt as if it was coated in fur and his lips were chapped and dry. He longed for crystal cold water..

The young soldiers had been running for twelve hours that day , ten of them had collapsed on the way and not a single one of them was helped. They had to keep on or they had served as meal for roaming wilds...

They had been told earlier by the commander that just three of them would be qualified as "Hunters".

"Good morning young soldiers! " the commander had said the previous day, a day after his arrival. The ninety six young men sat up and were all on attentions as he continued.

" now listen up very carefully, hundred of you had made it to this place, four are dead already but only ten of you will qualify as commandos, out of the ten of you, only three will be given the title "Hunter". You have no friends here, your friends might end up killing you, so you are on your own" the commander gave a wicked smile and then continued.

"you are just common Men from all over the world, who, if you are alive, would be called 'Hunters'. Have you ever jumped 20500 feet carrying 65kilos? A commando has to do five such jumps in his initial training and one of which must be in the dead of the night.... " he said as the Major entered. He was a man in his late twenties,tall and huge like a giant, he wore a frown face as he looked round the young men, he then continued from where the commander had earlier stopped.

"..... And one armed with the weight of an entire battle gear, 60km hike carrying 50kg of weight trekking to height of 29km with the same weight handling 22 types of guns the apex of which is the 'black mamba', diving deep inside the ocean" the man who was now walking round the men suddenly stopped in front of Jason and tapped his shoulder as he continued looking straight into his eyes "this is just a routine for a Hunter"

The commander who had been silent since the Major arrived continued.

"A hunter fight enemies without weapond, infiltrating enemy regions and eleminating them in their own areas where even the sun rays find it difficult to reach. Poisonous snakes which are responsible for countless of deaths are parts of hunter's meal "

The commander suddenly stopped as the major took over Like a planned speech.

" A Hunter is equivalent not to hundreds but thousands of soldiers because out of thousands of applicants only three qualifies as hunters, just three" he concluded....

As Jason moved on, he felt tired and physically exhausted. There were about fifty men ahead of him and countless behind him, not that he was a lazy soldier, but because he had been slowed down by Mike. He had wrapped his arm round his waist and helped him to walk. Mike had earlier collapsed on the deserted road and because Mike had earlier welcomed him warmly, jason was just helping a friend.

Mike had arrived a week before Jason, he was from the United state. Mike was tall, Lanky and garrulous in nature. He was arrested some weeks back for hacking the FBI web page system. The sixteen year old was later sent to Rigestan, Afghanistan to undergo a military training. Although Mike had no interest in fighting enemies with physical combat, but with computers, he had been mandated to undergo the same daily routine of the other soldiers which he had found rather Mundane..

When Jason arrived two days back with another twenty young men of below the age of twenty. They were met by four highly ranked commanders and a major. They were later taken to the camp where they had met the other seventy five. Jason, who had been oblivious of his new environment sat on his bunk, beside him was his bag which he had been given earlier by a soldier. No one had been allowed to come into the deadly camp with anything other than the bag.
As he sat, he looked around and noticed a large crowd of young men fro different countries. Jason ignored them and picked his bag, as he was about to open it, he met a standoffish gaze of one of the young men, his eyes were cold and frightful. Jason didn't flinch, he kept on looking at him as the boy wouldn't stop staring intently at him.

"That is python" Mike had said breaking the connection between the two boys.

"his real name is Thai Young. He is from Japan. He's brutal, cruel and ruthless. You don't want to mess with him . " Jason looked at his direction again but he had vanished.

" he had never spoken to anyone, he's always training on his own. He never gets tired, even when others are exhausted, he trains on. No one dares compete with him. Since he arrived, he had killed for men who had tried to challenge him.."

"is he retarded or something " Jason cut in feeling irated by what he was hearing.

" I don't think so, I learned that he was a convicted murder in his country and since he had killed four me already, I presume what I heard was true ". Mike said

" and what did they do to him, was he not supposed to be punished? " Jason asked

" punished!, there's no laws here, kill or be killed. We have all be condemned to death here, only ten of us will make it out alive, and I'm sure python will lead the survivors.. Anyways my name is Mike aka Fox as they call me " Jason looked at Mike in amazement.

" python!! , fox!! what a name " Jason burst into laughter..

" well we are Called by animals' name that fit our personalities..you will soon be given one. Welcome to hell Jason " he said checking the tag on his bag.

Jason was quiet, he remembered what he had been told by Mr sextone before he left, "You are the fifth boy I'm sending to Afghanistan, and if you can return alive then you will be the only one who had ever survived ."

Jason knew it would be a tough test for him but one thing was for sure, he must be part of the ten survivors. Jason knew he had already lost his moral sense, his conscience was dead long ago. He now lived for only one purpose "kill them all"..
