The umbrella body of Local Government employees in Kwara State (NULGE), has rejected the 1 billion naira share of Paris Club Loan refund, describing it as a rude shock, unfortunate and display of insensitivity to plight of impoverished staff.
The share wasn't up to 75% of the 2nd tranche of the loan refund agreed upon by the State government to offset the salary arrears of Local government employees, Junior/primary schools teachers, Local pensioners as well as SUBEB staff.

The Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has approved the release of N1b to local government councils in the state to offset part of their salary arrears.

 
The State Commissioner for Finance, Alhaji Demola Banu, who made the announcement in a statement released in Ilorin, said the N1b is part of the N5.1b received by the state government as its share of the Paris Club refunds from the Federal government this week.
 
Banu said the N5.1b received by the state government is 12.5 per cent lower than the amount it was expecting from the federal government.
 
The Commissioner said the balance of the refund will be utilized for projects and programs designed to enhance the welfare and security of all citizens and residents of Kwara State.

State government might, as a short term measure, raise taxes on businesses, and road tolls on state roads to raise cash for the salaries.

That is because, since independence, our economy has been 'wired' that way. We sell raw materials and food abroad....and share the money.

(That is why we have had a big civil war, several coups, and the current tribal fight as well as all those calls for restructuring, and even things like sharia, and Christian argy-bargy over who gets appointments and CRK....ultimately it is an argument over sharing money).

Back in the 1970's....we did have attempts at having a value creating economy....via the National Development PLans...which later evolved into VIsion 2020. But unfortunately, oil went up by 100% in 1973....and we fell back into our resource dependent ways.

The sad reality is that this Paris fund won't be utilized fully. Our leaders are so insensitive as well as myopic. Dialogue with the local government workers on why the government can't meet their expectations and prove to them that other projects that will benefit the state will consume part of the fund. Hereafter, assure them on a future date when the salaries will be fully paid. Give the your word and stand by it.

Saraki has been controlling the state for more that fourteen years and there is no special development there.

when I saw 5.1b allocated to kwara, I knew satanic saraki's share wud be 3b.
Kwarans shud keep quiet and enjoy the monster they ve most stupidly been supporting.

I would advise them to collect the money and manage because these governments does not care.

And the sharing continues, embezzling continues no imorovement or what so ever. What is the change for if the federal can not make states accountable
