Mimosa pudica commonly called ‘Touch-me-not’, Sensitive plant’, ‘Humble plant’ or ‘Shameful plant’ because of its reaction to touch, is a weed found throughout the tropics. Apart from its many traditional medicinal uses, a researcher at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Pharm. Justus Nwaoga, has discovered that the weed has solar properties suitable for the production of solar cell/electricity. Nwaoga spoke with Vanguard Learning in Ibadan recently. Excerpts:

Fascinated by the behaviour of mimosa pudica popularly called kpakorukwu or kpakochuku in Igbo, Pharm. Nwaoga decided to explore the relationship between sunlight and mimosa leaves. “I have always been eager to appreciate the behaviour of Mimosa pudica. The question has been; ‘why do the leaves collapse when touched, only to open again within minutes in daylight? “I look at the plant as a natural solar plant because it opens up in the mornings and closes in the evenings, therefore, must have solar materials in it. The search for knowledge took me to Mimosa locations to find out what happens at nighttime. I observed that the leaves remain folded when bright artificial light is shone on them. It became clear that the plant responds to solar energy, artificial light has no effect on it. “I believe that the movement of the leaves when touched, is connected with some form of electrical transmission. It can be likened to the behaviour of other living creatures. For example, when a person is touched unexpectedly, electrical impulses are transmitted to the brain, and the person moves with a jerk,” he said. Isolating the active material: Nwaoga subsequently, went to work to isolate the particular solar substance in the plant that responds to sunlight alone. “Nature has shown us that there is something there which is in fact, even more sensitive than the regular solar cell. “The generation of electrical energy with a solar-sensitive isolate from Mimosa pudica was achieved after series of designs to safeguard the electrical properties of the material. To convert the mechanical energy observed as spontaneous movement of the leaves to electrical energy, was an uphill task. A strong oxidation-reduction reaction was noticed in the extract, which quickly dissipated any trapped energy. After several attempts, however, it was possible to retain some quantum of electrical energy within the cells due to subsequent isolation of the principal compound,” noted Nwaoga. How it works: “The innovation is based on constructing bio-accumulators using the electrolytes derived from the mimosa plant. Solar cells constructed with the weed extracts and exposed to sunlight were found to accumulate solar energy which was converted to electrical energy,” said Nwaoga who is one of the 10 finalists for the forthcoming Innovation Prize for Africa. Mimosa pudica plant,Mimosa pudica plant, Refusing to give up: “The only meaningful way of demonstrating the electrical potential of the plant isolate was to use the cells to power an electrical circuit after combining the appropriate compound as electrodes. Experiments were performed initially using copper and other metals in turns as electrodes, but these failed. The conventional copper/zinc electrodes also did not work as the mimosa extract powerfully corroded the zinc plate. At that stage, the entire aspiration appeared to have turned illusive. Later, however, with more effort, the chemistry of the material was better understood, which guided the generation of steady DC current that lit a 4.5 V lamp. “With this breakthrough, it was possible to construct a functional mimosa solar panel with the plant extract. The solar panel is designed in such a way that the electrical potential of the cells can be restored on exposure to direct sun rays, after they have been discharged.” Pharm. Justus NwaogaPharm. Justus Nwaoga Prototype: “I have come up with the prototype which I have presented at so many exhibitions including the 26th European Union Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition in Hamburg Germany, and the NUC Research and Development show in Niger State where I came second. Mimosa pudica is now accepted as a new material for solar energy development,” he stated. On whether solar electricity will be cheaper if generated from this plant than from traditional silicon solar panels, he said; “It will be cheaper. About 0.5ml of one per cent concentration of mimosa extract can give you 0.25 volts or more when properly set. Again, some of the imported solar panels even crash or separate due to the intensity of the sun here.” Explaining further, Nwaoga said that there are scientific explanations to show that Mimosa pudica has electrical potential, which is energized by the sun’s radiation. “In conventional electricity, when ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ wires touch, there is a spark, and a situation known as short circuit occurs. This interrupts electric current and there may be power outage. “A similar process is believed to occur in mimosa pudica. When touched, the flow of electricity is interrupted and the leaves collapse. It may well be that a touch on this plant interferes with the flow of electric charges through the conducting parts and root hairs to or from the leaves. It is believed that the solar radiation incident on the leaf surface releases electrons that result in electric current,” he said.

Francisca Nneka Okeke FAS, is a Nigerian scientist and Professor of Physics at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and first female head of a department in the University.[2]

In 2011, she was elected as fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science, the apex scientific organization in Nigeria. She was inducted into the academy alongside Abba Gumel, a Professor of Mathematical biology and fellow of the African Academy of Sciences

Scientific Research

Okeke has dedicated much of her career to studying the ionosphere and the “equatorial electrojet phenomenon.” Energized by the sun, the electrojet is a river of electric current that traverses the globe eastward around the dip equator and causes the magnetic field at the dip equator to vary almost fives time more than anywhere else on the planet. (The dip or magnetic equator differs from the equator by a few degrees, as the Earth’s magnetic north pole is different from what we generally think of as the north pole.)

Okeke’s research on how solar activity in the ionosphere affects the Earth’s magnetic field could lead to a better understanding of climate change and help pinpoint sources of dramatic phenomena like tsunamis and earthquakes

Jessica Obioma Matthews
is a Nigerian-American inventor, CEO and venture capitalist. She is the co-founder of Uncharted Play, which makes Soccket, a soccer ball that can be used as a power generator. Matthews attended Harvard College and graduated from Harvard Business School.[2] In 2011, Fortune Magazine named her Fortune’s "10 Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs"[3] and in 2015, named her as Fortune’s "Most Promising Women Entrepreneurs."[4] In 2012, the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations named her "Scientist of the Year. Matthews is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Nigeria. The President of Nigeria named Matthews an Ambassador for Entrepreneurship for the country.

Uncharted Play

As a junior in college in 2008, Matthews and classmate Julia Silverman invented Soccket as part of an assignment for an engineering class.[13] She has described the inspiration for the invention as coming from an experience attending her aunt's wedding in Nigeria.[14] When the electricity was lost and diesel generators were used to keep the lights on, Matthews recognized the health hazard posed from fumes and decided to try to do something about it.[2] She and Silverman presented Soccket as their proposed solution, a soccer ball that stores kinetic energy as it's used. A half-hour of play with the soccer ball generates enough energy to power a small, attachable LED light for three hours,[15] so that play with soccer ball also provides children a reading light with which to do their homework after dark. The two founded Uncharted Play to develop Soccket, with Matthews becoming CEO.[3]

After graduating from college in 2010, Matthews took a full-time job working at a crowd-funding company called CrowdTap.[8] The following year, she left that company to work on Uncharted Play full-time,[3] initially raising funds through Kickstarter and then utilizing convertible debt.[8] That same year, she presented Soccket at the Clinton Global Initiative University[3] and on President Barack Obama's 2013 trip to Tanzania.[9][16] The company also makes a jump rope that stores energy in a means similar to Soccket called the Pulse, which generates three hours of power for an LED through 15 minutes of jumping rope.[8]

The initial manufacturing run of Soccket encountered significant quality control issues, so Matthews moved production to Uncharted Play's own facilities in New York. She subsequently shifted the company's focus to developing a broader range of kinetic-energy-storying products in partnership with experienced manufacturers. This shift included trademarking MORE, an acronym for Motion-based Off-Grid Renewable Energy, a system which uses Soccket's energy-storing method in consumer products beyond toys. "Matthews describes her company’s proprietary MORE technology as an energy harvesting and emanating building block that can be seamlessly integrated into various infrastructures, objects and products — everything from floor panels, streets, speedbumps and sidewalks, to subway turnstiles, strollers, shopping carts and beyond".[18] In 2016, Uncharted Play had been profitable for three consecutive years and doubled gross profit margins year over year. In 2016, Matthews raised $7 million in Series A funding for Uncharted Play, with the company valued at $57 million. TechCrunch reported that this made Matthews the 13th black female founder to have raised more than $1 million in funding. As of March 2017, 500,000 Socckets and Pulses had been used in developing regions, primarily in Africa and Latin America.
Other initiatives

In 2016, when Matthews moved Uncharted Play to Harlem, NY, she created a non-profit arm, the Harlem Tech Fund (HTF), which aims to support 100 new startups and offer technology training to 10,000 Harlem residents over the next two to five years.[1] Matthews serves as chairman of the board of HTF.[24] That same year, she was recognized at the Harlem Economic Development Day, receiving the Outstanding Corporate Diversity Award.[1]

Matthews has expanded to work on global infrastructure projects. She is co-founder and executive director of KDDC, developing a hydropower dam project in Nigeria. The 30-megawatt dam is among the first hydroelectric dam projects privatized in Nigeria.[25]
Recognition

Matthews has received numerous awards, honors and recognition, like being named Innovator of the Year by Black Enterprise in 2013, one of both Forbes 30 Under 30 and Inc. Magazine's 30 under 30 in 2014 and 2016, respectively, and selected twice by Fortune for recognition

Samuel Achilefu the inventor of cancer-visualizing google

https://i1.wp.com/www.risingafrica.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/achilefu-1.jpg

Samuel Achilefu is a Nigerian-born Professor of Radiography and Biomedical engineering. He currently serves as a Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine and a research member at Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center.

In 2014, Samuel received the prestigious St. Louis Award for creating and developing a set of high-tech cancer-visualizing goggles with the aim of helping surgeons see cancer cells in real-time while operating on patients

As head of the Washington University optical radiology laboratory — where researchers study how to use light to improve diagnosis and treatment of disease — Samuel Achilefu heard from surgeons frustrated by the difficulty of removing every remnant of a patient’s cancerous tumor.

Before surgery, imaging tests involving big, high-tech machines can create detailed pictures of a person’s cancer, Achilefu said, “but when a patient is in the operating room, it’s like walking in the dark.”

Achilefu wondered, what if he could take imaging technology and make it wearable like night-vision goggles used in the military so surgeons could see the cancer while they are operating?

The technology would be extremely difficult — some even thought impossible — to miniaturize and make functional and wearable for hours. But after dedicating five years to the project, Achilefu created cancer-visualizing glasses that were successfully used in surgeries for first time last year.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian-born scientist won the prestigious St. Louis Award for 2014 for his work in creating the technology, which could affect the outcomes of cancer patients across the world.

At the awards ceremony, Achilefu, 52, told the crowd his work was driven by the question: What if? “ ‘What if’ is really telling us that we should not be focusing on the problem,” he said, “but the potential solution for it.”

Foster pride

Achilefu is the 87th person to receive the annual award since it was established in1931 — the worst of the depression years — by prominent philanthropist David P. Wohl. The shoe company owner anonymously founded the award to recognize a St. Louis area resident who “performed such a service as to bring greatest honor to the community.” Wohl hoped to foster optimism and pride in the city he loved.

Award committee president David Kemper, chairman and of Commerce Bancshares Inc., praised Achilefu for “putting St. Louis in the spotlight for advancements in optical imaging technology that have pushed the boundaries of cancer treatment.”

Even under high magnification, it’s nearly impossible for surgeons to tell where a cancer tumor ends and healthy tissue begins. To make sure they remove all the cancerous cells, surgeons remove the tumor and neighboring tissue. The samples are sent to a lab and viewed under a microscope. If the surrounding tissue contains cancer cells, a second surgery is performed to remove even more tissue. Among breast cancer patients, about 20 to 25 percent who have cancerous lumps removed require a second surgery.

The glasses were used for the first time during a breast cancer operation on Feb. 10 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and have since been used on more than two dozen people with breast cancer, melanoma or liver cancer.

A commonly used contrast agent is injected into the patient’s tumor. When viewed with near-infared light, the cancerous cells glow blue. Tumors as small as 1 millimeter in diameter (as thick as about 10 sheets of paper) can be detected.

Breast surgeon Dr. Julie Margenthaler is encouraged. “Imagine what it would mean if these glasses eliminated the need for follow-up surgery and the associated pain, inconvenience and anxiety,” she said.

Achilefu started his research into the eyewear using funds from the university and the Department of Defense’s Breast Cancer Research Program. He assembled a team that included engineers and video game specialists to further refine the glasses. After successfully using the technology in rodents, his team received in 2012 a $2.8 million federal grant, paving the way for use in patients. The results will soon be used to seek FDA approval of the device so other surgeons across the country — who have already been calling — can start using it.

In 2001, Gill Jost, former chair of the radiology department, was searching across the country for an optical chemist to lead the laboratory at Washington U. It turned out, the best candidate was in St. Louis. Achilefu had since 1992 been working here for Mallinckrodt Inc., rising in the ranks as a star chemist.

As one of the top five students in Nigeria, Achilefu won a scholarship from the French government to study at the University of Nancy. He excelled and went on to earn his post-doctoral degree at Oxford University.

He came to St. Louis at the urging of his mentor, who was hired by Mallinckrodt to start a new research department. Despite being recruited by research institutions across the world, he chose to stay in St. Louis when he made the switch to academia. Married with two young children, Achilefu said he had come to love the city and see it as his home.

Jost said what makes Achilefu a great scientist is not only his diverse expertise in chemistry, cell biology, biomedical engineering and even genetics, but an intense curiosity that makes him delight in any challenge.

Achilefu also fosters that same determination in those who work in his lab. “It’s such a joy to watch how he nurtures people,” Jost said. His team is always pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Achilefu is also seeking FDA approval for a promising new contrast agent he helped develop. The agent selectively enters cancer cells anywhere in the body and stays there for up to a week, causing all different types of cancer cells to glow the same. The agent could help deliver toxic drugs directly to cancer cells, avoiding healthy cells altogether.

While the St. Louis Award recognizes a significant contribution by the winner, Achilefu said it was more about acknowledging values that can shape the city’s future.

“I’m fortunate to be at an institution where this is encouraged,” he said, “and to be a part of a community that encourages people to try very, very hard.”

Chris and Ada Ngoforo Founder of Rooti Dolls

Meet the Rooti dolls! Talking African figures wearing colourful clothes challenge racial stereotypes by breaking the Barbie mould

Dolls created by Chris and Ada Ngoforo who felt their children did not know enough about their roots
The couple have now made 12 dolls from different African countries
Each doll can speak a range of different African languages

They have launched their own range of toys, called Rooti Dolls, which are programmed to speak in several native African languages.

The couple have now made 12 dolls from different African countries.

Chris Ngoforo told CNN: 'We observed that over 90 per cent of children born or living in the diaspora and millions in Africa do not speak or understand their mother tongues.

'Our research made us understand that the reason for this is not because our children don't want to learn their mother tongues, but more because there are not many essential tools that can easily be both educational and fun at the same time.'

Among the dolls is Nina, who can speak Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa and Ibibio and loves to watch 'Nollywood' - popular term for Nigerian movies.

Then there is Ama, who dreams to be a doctor, and can speak the Ghanaian languages of Twi, Ga, Ewe and Krobo.

The couple hope the dolls will breakdown stereotypes and provide a more accurate representation of black people.

Debbie Behan Garrett, author of 'The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls', said: 'Today's black dolls have evolved from negative caricatures to play-scale representations of haute couture fashion models and other positive images of babies, toddlers and adult black people.'

Grace Ihejiamaizu

In 2012 The U.S. Department of State selected Grace Ihejiamaizu as September’s State Alumni Member of the Month in recognition of her dedication to developing Nigeria’s next generation of leaders. Ihejiamaizu participated in the 2010 Study of the United States Institute for Student Leaders (SUSI) Program on the theme of Social Entrepreneurship. She has since applied these entrepreneurial concepts in Nigeria by founding an after-school youth program.

Ihejiamaizu’s SUSI experience allowed her to examine how business techniques and entrepreneurial skills can be used to address social issues. Motivated by this knowledge and following her passion to help young people, Ihejiamaizu returned to Nigeria and launched Raising Young and Productive Entrepreneurs (RYPE). This after-school youth development program offers skills trainings, internship placements, volunteer activities, and a peer mentoring club to educate, engage, and empower Nigerian youth to become leaders and entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 2011, RYPE’s has reached more than 150 Nigerian youth.

As a young social entrepreneur, Ihejiamaizu has already won considerable national and international recognition. In 2010, Ihejiamaizu was recognized by SIFE Nigeria, for her Outstanding Contribution towards a Better Society. In 2011, she was named one of Google’s 12 Brightest Young Minds in the World and was invited to attend Google’s prestigious event, Zeitgeist Minds 2011. Also in 2011, Grace won a grant from the Young African Women Leaders Forum Small Grants Program in support of her RYPE initiative. Most recently, she was one of 60 young people selected from more than 2000 applications to attend the British Council’s Global Changemakers event.

Last month she was listed as Africa’s Top 30 Most Inspirational Young People. She has just started a Social Enterprise company, iKapture Networks, which provides educational services and products to secondary and post-secondary students in Nigeria. She is also the founder and content creator of the fast-growing online platform, opportunitydesk.org, with more than 100,000 visitors monthly from over 160 countries across the world.

Igbos have run out of pictures to post, now they have started listing their brothers and sisters in diaspora. I am really ashamed for these guys.
95% of the products they have posted on this thread are fake and substandard products imported from Asia. These people will go to Alibaba, import bulk of substandard products and re-labeled them as if they are produced in Nnewi or Onitsha. What a shame! One of them even has the audacity to show a wine product, I asked him where in Igboland the vine grapes used to produce the wine was harvested, I'm still expecting his response.
They claim they control 80% of industries in Southwest, we ask them where the industries are, they turn blind, deaf and dumb.

3. Install wordPress, pay 1500 naira for graphics

4. Pay $25 to tech crunch, or any tech related blog... Some might even do it for free who doesn't want free content for their blog.

5. Make some hype, and give outrageous figures which no one really cares... Venture fizzles out after a month

We know they spew rubbish, tales and lies, but funny enough, they started this thread to prove and support their fake claims, but it backfired and exposed their lies and tales.

You are the smartest, but you can not prove it.

You say you are the richest, but you have almost zero billionaires while other regions have so many on the list with the SW leading.

You say you are industrious, but you have nothing to show because your interpretation of industrious is 2x2 petty buy and sell shops or gala and pure water peddling.

You say you own everything from Lagos to Abuja, but you can not show us 1 single meaningful business to show us.

Now we have a thread about your fake industrious claim and instead of showing us your so called industrious traits, we are instead getting bombarded with meager achievements, fake and mediocre info, stealing other people's achievements and a dead thread.

This thread is a testament to their lies and we should let them off the hook grin

The pace of the Igbos is very fast and furious. How I wish we have our own country and all these people are producing in igboland, there will be jobs for even those in primary schools as industries will be more than the people grin
