The Underqualified Myth Exposed: Our Graduates Are More Than Equipped by sgtponzihater1(op): 10:15am On Jul 23, 2017
The continious clamour that Nigerian graduates are unqualified for the work place are simply tricks used by employers, motivational speakers and government to distract and decieve the unsuspecting. Education makes people trainable, what companies should actually do, if they really have spaces is to do paid internship for qualified graduate and then employ the best among them after these 6 months to 1 year internship.

But with a country bridled with corruption, companies pay both legal and illegal taxes, and finally become hostile to their workers, paying them peanuts and under-recruiting as a way to get back at the countries hostile terrain. I have seen employer make millions and pay their employees peanuts, yet expecting maximum output from them.

It is already common knowledge that graduates world over have mostly theoritcal knowledge than practical skills and the constant reminder does no obvious good. Newly trained Lawyers do not go to court and start handling litigation immediately, rather they accompany senior lawyers and then learn the trick of the trade. A young pharmacist may be confused when 250mg of cimetidine is prescribed, but an internship program prepares him for the task ahead. Similarly a newly graduated Doctor is a liability to himself and his society, moving stuff that cannot save a patient with acute pulmonary edema from surviving, but after internship, they become molded into practical physicians, ready for the beautiful art of Medicine.

See business environment is already hostile in Nigeria, MTN have to pay millions in levies, thus WWTBAM (Frank Edoho), have been suspended indefinitely, Project Fame have not called for auditions, some hundreds of people are unemployed just from the above. Econet license to work in Nigeria was more than 2ice that of New-Zealand and they were finally frustrated out of the country. You then wonder why Human capital development is not at the peak in this country. Employers are threading on hostile ground.

What can be done instead of blaming young , intelligent and vibrant graduates:

1. An enabling environment should be made by Government for new businesses.

2. The minimum wage rules should be enforced both in the private and public sectors.

3. Every new company must set up a plan, reviewed by government for human capital development.

4. Multinational should be engaged on paid internships for graduates, and plan must be put in place to train the locals on some technical aspects of their jobs. This will reduce the amount of foreigner manning positions locals can be productive in. It would also breed local competitors in similar industries in few years.

As an addendum, the current emphasis on a professor and legislator based economy should be revisted. Foreign countries don't pay lecturers the highest wages, but do so to those in the industries, policy makers, Economists, Doctors, Engineers. Legislators are mostly paid as part-time workers. With the professor based economy several able bodied graduates have remained in the universities running academic masters, PGDs and PHDs, with a dream of becoming the most respected and affluent in the society. This deters economic progress.

We must all be rich

It's actually annoying. When you try very hard to be useful and achieve success but the society conspire against you. The same society that's made it difficult to succeed will also turn around and blame you.

It's not that we don't know ways to succeed. That's not the case. The issue is that the right ways we know to succeed has a corrupt person at its top whose moral compass is highly eroded and requires same from graduates. Cash. IM. Sugar Daddies. etc.

What they scream now is Entrepreneurship as though entrepreneurship is run with only our mental capital. The truth today is, the fastest way to succeed in Nigeria is through corrupting yourself and shedding away your humanity. Unfortunate.

Dude, our government knows what to do exactly to better the economy and create an enabling environment for every citizens... But we the youths are the problem.. We keep voting into power old men who are concerned about their family alone....

The constitution alone is Nigeria's biggest problem... It was even amended to give incumbent personels occupying one or two offices more opportunities to loot the country...

One man said, he was in Primary school when Obasanjo Mathew was the Head of State and when he was about graduating from the university he heard that the same Obasanjo became Nigeria's president...

Old men keeps ruling us... with dark minds..

Buhari is accused of appointing kids as ministers... and you can imagine someone calling a grandpa like Lai Mohammed a kid... So in essence, people within the age range of 70-90 are the true leaders from the mindset of those calling Buhari ministers kids...

Nigeria will get better, but no one can tell when... maybe it will get better if we youths employ assassin to eliminate the people manipulating our government... park them into one room and set them ablaze... then set a deadly penalty for any criminal offense...

I totally agree, youth corpers learnt bead making, soap making and baking, the government deceived them that it was the solution to their problem. Today they all agree that it was a way to keep them busy and blind from the truth

Sometimes I wonder when that change will come. But the current trend of government blaming graduates for being under qualified by the same institution they set up is absolute trash.

Those were good programs though but because business is beyond learning basic skills, most of us find it hard to practise after acquisition. If a reasonable loan system to SMEs was in place, most trainings will yield more fruits.

Youths are the problem? I disagree. Most people who rule us today existed and showed their hands in the time of our elders and fathers. And if our fathers and elders choose to be economical with the truth or not well informed in their time, it's difficult for a youth who put so much faith in them and not well informed to vote otherwise. Both the elders and youths are responsible for our current state.

This is so on point, imagine someone asking me to go and do PHd that when i am through I will get a job as a lecturer or with world bank. I just laughed.

So I should go and join these guys, who all they know is to copy many books, bind it together, and publish on one foreign website to get creds among themselves. Contributing nothing but rehashed ancient theories.
