This is what I do when I am stopped on the highway by a stranger.

I slow down, roll my glass down and smile gently to the person. Afterwards, I roll my glass back up and voom!

Nobody can be trusted in this world again o

Funny

If you try that with me and I just happen to have my .357 magnum with me, nigga imma blast your smiling face off forever!

Can you imagine?!

You think being stranded is funny? cool

It makes me recall a situation I was in last year. I think the guys abandoned the plan, because they knew I was too innocent to even know what was happening.

It is my philosophy not to pick anyone on the highway. I enjoy driving alone with my music. I don't want anyone to set me up.

Ps: if you want to help anyone at all, please check their bag and pocket before letting them in and also let them know you will not stop half way.

When doing distant travels. I don't.

Simple reason:

Police stops you, you know yourself. Them, what's in their bag?

I stopped giving people lift many years ago after one family I helped stole my Blackberry despite the fact I helped them from where they seemed stranded late at night .

A man once assisted a pregnant woman in his car in the company of his wife and 3 sons, on getting to a lonely junction she started complaining of full bladder, not knowing she was among a kidnapping and ritualist syndicate. The family were waylaid and ordered to release one of their sons or they would kill them all, he had to release his son named simon and they were instructed to enter their vehicle and drive off, he quickly reported at the next police check point, unfortunately the deed has been done, the boy was killed and organs removed. What still haunt the man, was the son's last word which was " daddy why me"

Picking people on the high way read this and share.

A brother shared this testimony in the church today.

He was travelling to Warri and he had a very busy night and was feeling dizzy while driving but the trip is a must because he must catch up the appointment in warri.

He said he is not in the habit of picking people on the highway, but he needed someone whom he will be discussing with to prevent him from sleeping while driving.

Luckily for him, when he got to Choba brigde he saw two young ladies standing by the roadside waiting for car they waved at him and he quickly stopped.

The lady: Good afternoon sir

The man: yes good afternoon

The lady: Sir please will you get to Mbiama junction?

The man: Yes but I can only carry one person

The lady: Ok no problem sir, I just met her here we are not together.

The lady claimed.

She joined the man and they drove off, along the line she started acting restless, looking at the man, pressing her smart phone chatting and after a while she started answering calls, though she never said anything in the phone just mmh, mmh uhh, yes, no.

During the calls the man reduced his speed, and started observing the lady. At some point the lady started talking to the man seeking attention and all, he kept quiet and was observing her.

They got to Ahoada, the lady said she want to buy something and the man said he can't wait.

She went down and the brother drove off and told her good bye, along the line he decided to buy fuel and drove into a Total filling station, while waiting something told him to search the car especially the area the lady was sitting because she might mistaking drop a feminine object that he can't explain to his wife, while search he saw bunch of Indian hemp wrapped in a brown paper he quickly picked it up, asked for their rest room, went in and empty the content of the paper inside the toilet, flush and threw the paper inside the waste bin there, bought his fuel and continue his journey this time around the sleep cleared from his eyes.

They got to Mbiama bridge at the police highway patrol checkpoint before the army check point his car and one other car was thoroughly search they didn't find anything in his car yet they never allowed him to go as they continued with unending search.

Inside the other car they find Indian hemp under the seat, the man couldn't explain how it got in their, later he said he over had the man pleading and telling the police man he picked one lady at Choba bridge, probably the lady never knew it fell off from her bag.

Later the brother excused the man and asked him the cloth the lady was wearing and where she dropped, behold it's the lady standing with the one he picked and she stopped at the same Ahoada but he was smart enough to search his car after she dropped and discovered bunch of Indian hemp wrapped in the same paper similar to the one he thrashed in the toilet at the filling station.

He realised it was a set up but to avoid paying for what he cannot substantiate he kept quiet until they asked him to go and took the other man to their station, only God knows how they settled.

For the single men and married men driving on the high way do not pick strangers.

I do travel a lot by road and even I know giving lifts is a No! No! I have only ever once given lift to a person and it was a Police officer just immediately after Head Bridge in Onitsha. He said he was going to Agbor. Now the reason I even found myself talking to him was because I had stopped to pee by the roadside and he walked up to me. So I gave him a once over and he didn't look threatening to me. So I told him I can give him a lift if he answers all my questions properly. He said No problem. So I asked to see his Police I.D because he had a name tag on his uniform, He showed me and it matched. So I asked to see the content of his bag and pocket which he surprisingly agreed to. So I saw his pocket, checked his Bag and he was clean. His name matched with the name plate on his uniform. I told him I will only stop at Agbor junction and no where else and he agreed. So I put his luggage in the back and we set off.. It was a very pleasing Journey as he shared his Police stories with me and even gave me some smart security tips for road travel.. Tips like "Always pay attention to the other side of the road. Take not of the vehicles coming. They will be your first signal as to if there is a problem ahead of you" also "If you suddenly notice you haven't passed any oncoming vehicles in a while, find a safe place to stop and wait. Something may be wrong ahead of you". He said he understood why I did what I did with him and said it showed I was smart and security conscious and thanked me for the ride.

Like I said, I enjoyed this my one experience but I have never done it again. It's very not advisable and if you must, make sure to check the person out "including a full body pat down" if necessary. If they refuse, then its fine. Let them stay and wait for another lift cos they are not entering my Car if I am not sure if you. MY CAR, MY RULES.. After all it's a free ride.

My biggest issue however is the distrust in our society. As a road traveller, it's a common sight to see people with broken down vehicles on the roadside in need of some assistance. However the society we live in is so bad people can act vulnerable just to get you to stop. I drive a truck which is powerful enough to tow even an SUV and sometimes I realise all it will take is a simple tow to the nearest town to get them some help but I never stop. I always pray never to find myself in such situation cos I don't expect anyone to stop and I wouldn't blame them either for not stopping. Plus I would even be scared to try to wave down vehicles for fear of who I might be stopping. This is a very sad way to live as a people and a society.

Never stop on the highway, unless it's an emergency or a flat Tyre, if necessary risk loosing the whole Tyre if you have a gut feeling not to stop till you reach the next village.

Then you be learner for waka. grin Nigerian Police has searched my vehicle thoroughly from Boot to under seat, pigeon hope, glass compartment, arm rest, seat pockets, my luggage in the vehicle including browsing my plate number on FRSC website and checking my tint permit status online in the middle of an interstate highway.

There is a very notorious group on Owerri - Onitsha expressway just after Obosi interchange and Oba junction. They almost always stop and search me. grin

Within town you will rarely experience it.

If I remember well, a Nairalander once shared a story that made FP about a policeman he and his dad gave a lift, the policeman purposely left some bullets which they were fortunate enough to see and throw away. When they got to the next checkpoint, they were stopped and the policemen went to the exact place the officer they gave a left dropped those bullets but they couldn't see anything

you're sick!

how many times have you traveled long distances and encountered highway policemen?

they'll make you show them your papers, confirm they're ok then proceed to search your booth, your car seats, and sometimes even your engine. don't mess with the police, especially when they're mean.
