Niger Delta Youths Shutdown Shell Facilities by Truth234(op): 5:19pm On Aug 14, 2017
The youths of Belema community on Monday shutdown Shell’s flow station and gas plant.

The angry youths accused the multinational company of neglecting them and marginalizing the community for years.

However, the General Manager, External Relations, Igo Weli, refuted the claims. According to him, a total of $31 billion has been paid by the multinational company to the federal government and Niger Delta Development Commission in the last four years.

Weli said a total of $29.8 billion was paid to the federation account between 2002 and 2016. While another $1.2 billion was paid to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) account in the last four years.

He further stated that the action of the youths is ‘worrisome’ and capable of discouraging investment in the region.

According to Weli, “In 2016 alone, Shell contribution to NDDC was 106.8 million dollars; people need to define their expectation; ask themselves if their expectation is realistic and if SPDC is government.

“Between 2012 and 2016, SPDC JV contributed $29.8 billion to the federation account which flows down to the state governments, local governments and to the communities.

“The business we do add value in several ways through contributions to the federation account and the NDDC.

“SPDC has made several efforts to sensitise the people on how our business is run, so that their expectations can be realistic and align with realities of how we run our business,” he said.

Reminds me of how dangote planned to situate his #12 billion in rivers state only for those stupid rivers communities to start forming unions, organizations just to collect money, as a business man dangote moved his investment to Lagos where sane persons reside. A refinery that could have employed thousands of rivers youths.

This is how these jobless and lazy youths keep driving away investors. How can they tell she'll to handover to their local company. Can't they take a clue from Lagos? why are people very comfortable setting up investments in Lagos and not rivers. Still they will complain of lack of jobs for youths. these guys are uselessly lazy. Spdc even has 11 court cases as defendants from 11 different organizations. U want to build road for them, u settle the youths, u want to build hospital for them u settle the youths, u want to give them water, u settle the youths.
I know how in Kebbi the indigenes bring roasted yam for us while repairing their water pipes, unlike rivers where they will kidnap and harass u

Why do some of our youths think that violence is the best way to go in seeking for retribution?

oga we understand you.B t look at it this way, why not restructure the country and allow them to mismanage the money and blame themselves..Let me borrow a point from the biafran manifest that says that states will have 70 percent of the resources and give 30 to the center while local gov takes 20% the host community takes 10% leaving the state with 40%. if you go by this the centre collects 3 billion dollars while the state share 28 billion dollars. So tell me whats wromg with that and whi will complian if such a system is in place. The citizens check there governors cos notting will come from tye centre...so lets do the right tging and stop running in the bush like anterlops, restructure or divisiom.

The day Nigeria dont get oil is the day Nigeria would die. Already, when the militants in the Niger delta were blowing up pipelines we saw how the economy collapsed together with falling oil prices. Oil is the oxygen Nigeria breathes with.

You think traditional rulers in Lagos don't collect money ND settlement from big investors? It's a Nigerian problem, not one perculiar to the Niger Delta alone. I work in the Telecom sector in Lagos as a Field Engineer. Anytime we go for fueling or major site work, area boys collect huge sums of money to let us pass( I've been flogged before. I know a colleague that was killed in Ikorudu for not settling) Plus greedy landlord association that bill as much as 600k a year as security fees for a single Tel station site. You should have asked your self who the Niger Deltans learnt from.
