I think this is one of your best sewing tutorials yet. The explanations are very clear that even a novice like me understands the technic. I used to wonder about all those mermaid skirts but now it is very clear. Thanks a lot

If you are talking about the basic bodice pattern. Then point C is half the shoulder measurements.
Re: Sewing for beginners by marylandcakes: 2:54pm On Sep 03, 2017
You can apply this method to a six piece skirt ,only that the centre back will be split because of the zip allowance. Also the waist measurements should be divided by 6 then divided by 2 if they are to be cut out on the fold.
Re: Sewing for beginners by marylandcakes: 2:56pm On Sep 03, 2017
If you the count the pieces you will end up with seven because of the split centre back. Don't forget to add seam allowance.

Hi Marylandcakes, nice job u are doing here. God bless u much. I recently picked interest in sewing and have been learning on youtube. pls I really need to ask, some videos I see don't really use this graph like stuff and all the markings here and there (forgive me I hate math). I just go ahead and fold into four, mark the measurements and cut. Pls can I go on like this or I must learn pattern drafting? Looks complicated. Pls just explain. Thanks.

Some people cut directly on the fabric but if you want a professional cut and look pattern drafting is the way to go, also if you make a mistake on the paper it is easy to rectify and you can reuse the pattern over and over again. I would suggest if you want to learn sewing you should learn it properly, if you are unsure you can always ask questions and I will try and answer them the best way I can.

From the little I've learnt from this thread I was a complete novice so you have a much better chance than myself. I will suggest you start from the beginning of this thread and watch the basic bodice video by the op.

I can make a gather dress, a skirt and I learnt it all from this thread, I'm still trying to perfect the sleeves.

If you mean the green cutting board then its a craft cutting board. or did you mean the pattern paper?

You will have to start from the very basics,

Taking measurements then learn how to transfer these figures onto paper to make patterns. If you watch professional designers they always use pattern paper even after that they will draft with muslin before cutting into the final fabric. You will need a lot of patience.
I will suggest you get yourself an exercise book and start from there. You don't need to buy too many materials all you need for now is a tape measure, ruler a good scissors. You can use any paper as your pattern paper. Some people use news paper the only disadvantage is that you can't see you markings clearly.

You will also need marking tools like tailors chalk and a marking pen.

Very useful advice for the novice. At what point do we have to purchase the dummy?
