I am a Grandfather, so this story of the 1970s should not surprise you.... Going through some old junk, I came across the Coop Bank savings passbook which I used in my undergraduate days. This was before 1973 when we changed from Pounds, Shillings and Pence to Naira and Kobo. Find attached a five shillings note we were using up till 1972. This was a lot of money in those days. Going down memory lane, I remember then in 1979, just before he handed over to Alhaji Shehu Shagari, when General Olusegun Obasanjo decreed the nation's highest currency of N20 to honour the late General Murtala Muhammed. That was how the colour of N20 naira note was until the regime of Gen Muhammadu Buhari changed around the colours of N1, N5, N10 and N20 notes in 1984 Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you have enjoyed a bit of the practical history of Nigeria that I just narrated? As they will keep on saying: "That Was Then: In Those Good, Old Days!".... It will seem that I have now joined "Them", isn't it?

Officialkplus:During 1975/76 period, newspapers were being sold for between 10k and 15k (10k being ten kobo or 10% of N1 (One naira) I hope no one will mistake my 10k to your youthful way of writing of 10,000!!!) Very confusing - these present day youths! I had earlier written of the cost of brand new cars... A V/W Beetle then was less than N2,600 A litre of SUPER petrol was 10k (as in kobo). To fill up an empty tank of 30 litres was N3 'pere'! The regular or ordinary petrol was 8.5kobo a litre As Corpers, (NYSC) our monthly stipend was N80 - a big improvement on our predecessors' N60 a month. I was able to still save and buy a Television set for my proud father at the end of the Service Year in 1976. It was a Sanyo product. It was enclosed in a cabinet with sliding doors and provision for standing legs as shown in this live picture. Yes.... I still have it nearby more than 40 years after. In addition, I am attaching a picture of my NYSC cap - it is still available
