Cannavaro is an exception, and wasn't the main man engaging in aerial duel. He would rather chase the striker in a foot race as he is very fast. Ditto Carvalho.

Mustafi has neither the height to jump with strikers, nor the body mass or strength to lever them off the ball to prevent them jumping, nor the footspeed to play the role of sweeping up after his partner has engaged the striker. I saw nothing in him that made Arsenal shell out that kind of money for him.

Trust me, Ake is a possession midfielder the few times I saw him. His touch, turn and repetitive passing is great.

Size is height and weight. His whole body frame is weak for a defender standing only 6 ft. It get the way your chest go big, you will pin down any striker trying to jump with you even if he is taller than you.
