rodeo0070:
Zenith Bank Nigeria PLC has just overtaken First Bank PLC as the largest bank in Nigeria.

The data is based on both bank’s financial reports which showed that Zenith Bank’s total asset base is now NGN4.9 trillion compared to FBN Holdings’ NGN4.8 trillion total asset base.

As seen on this table, Zenith Bank took over the position with a slight margin and either of FBN Holdings or Zenith might take the lead at by the time they both disclose their financials for the third quarter of the year.

Looking at these data from another angle, Ecobank, registered as Eco Transnational Incorporated, ETI, is the largest financial services group in West Africa and not in Nigeria. This is because of its asset base aggregates all the asset position of its pan-African spread and its other subsidiaries.

The table also showed a list of their liabilities to further have a deeper view of things.

Note that there some bank’s asset were based on their last financial reports. This list will be updated from time to time as soon as all results are released.

Stanbic IBTC has assets in excess of 1trillion and not 1 billion. 1 billion is not even anyway near the capital requirements to operate a commercial bank in Nigeria.

SHINA PETERS VS JIM OVIA

In 1990, Shina Peters built a house with N20 million naira; the same year Jim Ovia started Zenith Bank with the same amount.

Today, you and I don't have a room in Shina's house but I have an account in Jim's bank and probably you do too.

Shina's house was built in Iju Lagos and remains there till date.
Jim's bank started in a corner and now has over 500 branches in Nigeria, and many international branches.

Millions upon millions transact business in Jim's bank daily.
Shina's house is becoming dilapidated...in 2015, he SPENT more money to renovate the house and bought a Nissan Pathfinder with N10 million...additional liability, while in the same 2015, Jim's bank MADE a profit of N105.7 billion.

Today, Zenith Bank is the largest bank in Nigeria, while Shina Peter might be ashamed to live in his house now.

This is the difference between Assets and Liability. If you buy a car for N20 million today, in 20 years time, you will be ashamed to drive it. On the other hand, if you invest that same amount in a lucrative business or in an asset, It may be worth billions in 20 years. ( Jim Ovia is now worth $980 million dollars, with the official dollar rate of N320, that means he is worth N313 BILLION NAIRA because of an investment of N20 million).

Spend the little money you have today wisely. Some people driving expensive cars today, are not aware that they are driving their future and the future of their children. Some people carrying iphone7 today, may not be aware that they are carrying their future.

When you are young, don't spend money. Invest it.
Every penny in your hand is like a seed, you can decide to eat it, or sow it. When you sow it, it will bear much more seeds later in future.

Let's be wise.
Where do y'all even get all these mumu stories from? This isn't the first time I'm seeing this mumu story. Shina Peters never built any 20-million naira house in 1990. Do you even have any idea how much 20 million naira was in 1990 (with inflation adjustment). How much was Shina Peters worth in 1990 that he'd build a house of 20 million naira grin

The principle is clear but the story was made up.

That was an error. The liabilities' supposed to be in millions, not billions.

You guys forget that Banks add loans as one of her asset.
Who knows what percentage of the asset is covered by loans.

Meanwhile I am more interested in Banks Liquidity ratio, so when trouble starts, I know who has the ability to manage it quickly. Some of those asset would be sold at a reduced sum if liquidated in times of need

It's a policy of stanbic bank not to own assets outside South Africa ...so most of there branches are rented that's why they don't have much assets

The OP gave a grossly innacurate information.
And comments are hence wrong based on the OP feeding them wrong data.

How will a commercial banks asset be 1 Billion. Even MFBs have more than that.
Dang even some MFIs and mine lenders have more than that in total assets.

Rubbish info being spread around

When bank managers talk of liability, it doesn't necessarily mean deficit, but deposits and the likes. Its termed liability because they're obligated to pay these deposits, interests, etc in the future or on demand.

If you are looking for a reliable Bank in Nigeria, Firstbank is second to none. Zenith Bank is owned by mostly fraudsters and Govt thieves. No ethics of banking and it encourages prostitution among the female staff. Firstbank is truly the First. With my 2k in Firstbank, I can sleep with my two eyes closed

You are writing rubbish! First bank is a known criminal infested bank, all the past leaders launder their ill gotten wealth. First bank was bequeathed by UK. Yet they still run on corruption. Unlike zenith bank, that is credible and trus.tworthy

I use both banks and GTB and it is only first bank I have found frustrating. Excellent services by all of them but for the theft and fraud being committed by first bank. Why would I be charged for card maintenance fee when there are months I don't even transact with the account. Obviously, they are loosing more customers. @ firstbank, If any of your team is viewing this thread, pls do something about that. Why would an account be debited monthly for several charges even as there was no transaction on/with the account that month.
Re: Zenith Bank Overtakes First Bank As The Largest Bank In Nigeria by DeLaRue: 12:32pm On Aug 27, 2017
There are many ways to calculate 'largest', 'biggest' bank.

Largest by branch network (First Bank)
Largest by net assets (Zenith?)
Largest by stock market valuation (GTB)

When financial experts (CNN Money, Bloomberg etc) talk of the 'biggest' bank in Nigeria, they say GTB. That's because it is the most valuable bank in the country.

Despite having much fewer branches than First Bank, Zenith, UBA and probably Access, GTB makes more profit than any bank in Nigeria.

Very impressive.
