Obaze is a common name in Anioma. Name of Benin/Edo origin of course. Other common Anioma names of Edo origin are Irabor, Isibor, Igbinoba ( several Deins/Obis of Agbor were called Gbenoba/Igbinoba in the past), Osifo, etc Considering Onitsha is part of Anambra North, just across from Anioma, not a big surprise.

Several accounts points to founding of Onitsha by people from or linked to ancient Benin Empire in the 1500s. See Wiki on Onitsha.

But with modern Nigeria with tribal and secessionists tendencies, such debates about links to Benin Empire quickly generate into bigotry instead of trying to learn & explain.
