Students of the of Ghana Medical School for some years now have been faced with a lot of challenges including the deplorable nature of their hostels and difficulty they endure in transporting themselves daily from the main campus to Korle-Bu for their studies.

Today, it’s exciting to know that, the next batch of UG medical school students will not suffer the same fate. Thanks to President John Dramani Mahama, the narrative has changed for our future medical practitioners.
In a few weeks, President John Mahama will commission the new 600-bed capacity University of Ghana Medical College situated on the University of Ghana, Legon campus.
Apart from providing a serene atmosphere for effective teaching and learning, this project will also significantly boost the university’s efforts to develop World-Class Human Resources and Capabilities to meet National Development needs and Global Challenges.
These exciting US medical college photos will make you want to become a medical student.
This project is Timely and a game changer especially for our medical school students and for an improved healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Nigeria, giant of Africa my foot. When a project like this is even initiated at all ,it would be trailed by nepotism ,bribery ,tribalism and man know man syndrome,I could remember when refurbishment of all the federal government teaching hospitals was to be carried out ,the equipment that were imported were almost going out of fashion already ,and some of the teaching hospitals were not even touched at all ,how abt the funds already allocated for the exercise ?ur guess is as good as mine, the monies went into party members' pockets.....
The Vice Chancellors and NUC re also culpable nd complicit in the rot bedevilling our ivory towers, truth be told the government alone can't do it and the subventions released to the citadels of learning re either embezzled and misappropriated by the " ogas on top "

We re just not ready to move forward as a nation becos we all ve our different roles to play bt unfortunately those at the top ain't setting good examples, during campaigns they say all sorts of things to get our votes ,president BUHARi even went as far as making a cup of tea with sachets of milo nd milk for breakfast just to create the
impression of an austere, accountable and responsible individual with whom our resources would be safe BT since he got on the seat it has been a different ball game altogether,it was still him who in the course of campaigning said he would end medical tourism and since he assumed that seat its been the opposite....

Deception and double-dealing re the trademarks of Nigerian politicians ,believe them at ur own peril....

You guys are yet to understand that good quality education is not cheap. As at last I check, medical students in Ghana pay as much as $2200 per year which is still very cheap when compared to other notable universities in Africa. And these university is still funded by the government.

If something like these is built in unilag or other federal unis and fees are increased so as to be able to maintain it, you will be the same people to start protesting. The sooner we come to terms with the fact that quality education is not cheap, the better for all of us.

We like things to be given to us on a platter but still complain that they are not enough. That's why we churn out half baked unemployable graduates every year and still complain of the fall in the standard of education.

If you think education is cheap, try ignorance.

Re u for real abt medical student paying 2,200 dollars per session? I am asking becos this is way too cheap compared to wat other universities in Africa. take for their. medical courses ,Nigeria inclusive.... I am not disputing that education is expensive BT wat steps is our own government putting in place to overhaul the whole system? After all,in this same country we have parents coughing out millions of naira per session in getting their wards quality education ,BT wat re the public universities and their. proprietors doing ?
Do they even get to remit any monies. from the numerous and acceptance fee they do charge. students to the federal government. aside the subventions given to them by government..

It will surprise u to know when the teaching. hospitals were last refurbished, properly funded and provided with medical equipments ... The C.M.Ds share in the blame of the rot in our health sector too ,an instance where like 50 to 70 interns re meant to be taken in BT they rather reduce. the number of interns to an infinitesimally low number so that they can pocket. the salaries meant. for the ones they denied admission , and also diesel palaver. and staff's allowances re other areas too, we as a people re not just ready until we start to look and search inwards the so much talked about development. would keep eluding us ..

Huh to be sincere I am jealous.... Lalasticlala I think we all need to see this.

We need to realise Nigeria can't fund all its universities to World Class. We need to pick 6(one from each region) flagship universities like the ivy leagues or C9 of China and fund it excessively like Ghana funds the university of Ghana, so that those universities can in turn help to solve some of our top most national problems.
Those universities would be
1) Mandated to reduce their various enrollment sizes to NUC recommended capacities.

2) Encouraged to put more emphasis on postgraduate/research education.

3) Allowed to determine its fees in line with an agreed aggregate with FG(Not expensive but not outrageously low)

4) Encouraged to do away with Catchment policies and Elds consideration for undergraduate enrollment and staff recruitment.

5) Encouraged to remain comprehensive universities but with a degree of speciality in certain disciplines e.g UI for Medicine/Surgery, ABU for Military research, UNN for renewable energy.

6) Mandated to do away with ASUU

7) Encouraged to tap into industry partnership for more income.

cool Encouraged to create an important metric that assess researchers relevance in Scopus and Thompson Reuters web of science and base staff promotion on it.

9) Excessively funded by govt. Recommendation would be to allocate additional funds of 25 billion per university.

10) Mandated to publish annual independent financial audit report by either PwC or KPMG which would be posted on the University website as done by many world class university.

11) Encouraged to have a strong and updated internet presence to boost visibility of the universities. UI and UNN websites looks like junk.

12) Encourage collaboration with research universities in developing nations and developed countries(dealing with issues pertaining to developing nations). This would also increase the chances of getting millions of dollars in grant from foreign organisations.

13) Individual FG ministeries should recommend research work to the university of choice as they deem fit. E.g Rice production in Nigeria with genetic modification(to carry b-carotene for vit A production) aimed at eradicating commonplace blindness in Northern Nigeria. In the event the project is too costly for govt or the university, the university having requisite facility, infrastructure, processes and international collaborations would be able to attract billions of dollars from generous foreign organisations. Case study; Oxford currently has a 5 bill USD grant from Gates foundation to develop C4 rice.

13) Govt set up an apolitical technical committee and assess the performance of these universities across their core mandate, research relevance, international outlook and rankings(especially Times and ARWU)

So that would be 150 billion more for our flagship universities. Considering the fact that the Nigerian senate takes just about that amount as its annual budget then that shouldn't be too hard for Nigeria to afford.

Noted!

Your points are valid!!

The system in Nigeria needs a total overhaul. I don't know how difficult it is to replicate a working system. These things are very easy, we can do it but we are used to doing things the wrong way.

Corruption have eaten deep into the fabrics of our existence. Am just tired. We keep on talking and talking with nothing to show for it.

Our mumu never do?!?

Let nobody complain about the Nigerian system, we have all contributed to the terrible state of the country.
During the next election, let us all go ahead and vote for a cow herder with no proven track record of honesty.
Let's all cast our votes for politicians who keep sending their children abroad and preach about loving Nigeria.
Let's vote for politicians with track record of corruption.
I believe we shouldn't forget to vote for a politician who believes overseas treatment is the best.

A program of two years in the university turns to four years and your hear some people shouting Great..... What...what...what

Religiously terrible nation.

What you said is the undisputed truth, but in a country where the minimum wage is #18000; I leave you to imagine how people will be able to afford such fees. Nigeria is a sham, an abomination that should have been killed off at birth

This is what a president who knows the value of education does, but here in Nigeria ASUU is still struggling with FG on strike.
Buhari will not think of such development, he will rather use the money to buy weapons from US while ASUU strike continues.

When you tell Nigerians that other African countries are developing faster and leaving them behind, they start forming giant of Africa syndrome.

I remember the Mugabe thread where he said Zimbabwe was better than Nigeria and some idiottts started arguing blindly. Thank goodness for the nairalander that gave sufficient evidence.

If you like continue fighting Biafra instead of fixing your uncountable problems.
