Re: ASUU Gives FG 6 New Conditions To End Strike by profudus(m):
ASUU is the cause of this quagmire. First, the demand to remove IGR from TSA is driven by fraudulent intention of using public money for private purpose, which will result in embezzlement, misappropriation, skimming and larceny. Second, top management staff having their wives and relations in the staff primary schools shouldn't be a cogent reason for them to receive salary based on university scale. A primary school remains a primary school irrespective of where it is located and should be treated as such. Third, it has been the attitude of VCs in Nigerian universities to engage in massive recruitment to bring in their relatives, friends, children and allies before they leave office without recourse to availability of cash to pay salaries. Fourth , how can an employee asks for an autonomy in running an employer's organization? In a company, one's investment quantum determines one's controlling right. I thought philosophy and logic is taught by ASUU members. Why are they reasoning poorly? To say the least, our intellectuals act and reason poorly because of greed and selfish interests. ASUU needs to understand that public schools were established by government to render essential services to the general public at little or no cost.

See, just sell off these universities. People who cant afford the school fees will now be on scholarship. To ease the burden, everyone will pay the current fees in year one. In essence, govt gives everyone a scholarship. Then everyone on a 3.5 gp gets a scholarship from year 2 onwards. Drop from 3.5, u lose ur scholarship. All salaries should be paid by the schools, not government. Covenant university doesn't pay lecturers what govt pays them, yet they are one of the best in Africa, ahead of even schools like UI and OAU sometimes in the rankings. We don tire for this rubbish.

that will only lead to more problems, remember the UNILORIN 49 some 12 years ago, they took FG to court and won ,they were paid their backlog of salaries and arrears as well as those who were to be promoted, got promoted to the present status. It's not so easy to just sack a group of people in service, if 49 could win then how far will 500 sacked lecturers go?
Your point is very much valid..... But this ASUU as much as the Government do not actually care about the student, they are all about how they are going to get paid and the government is all about how they are going to loot money.....
With all these happening now...I fear for the future

All these are hap... do not have their children in our universities.
They are all schooling abroad, where you have leaders who love education and the future of their country.
So they should grant all the requests ASUU have made? You'll be a leader some day, I hope you'll remember these things. Leadership isn't as easy as we think. These lecturers are down right greedy, that's why I hate unionism, they always strong arm the authorities and it's unfair

Payment of University Salary Scale to teachers in primary schools in universities;

The the government is said to be shocked by ASUU’s fresh request that the Federal Government should pay University Salary Scale to primary school teachers in varsity staff schools.

It said: “They are saying that the staff school should be allowed to continue to collect tuition fees.”

“The government has a different approach to the staff school. Apart from retaining its policy that primary education is free under the Universal Basic Education (UBE) Scheme, the government is of the opinion that teachers in varsity schools be either paid by the Universal Basic Education Commission(UBEC) or be placed under the salary scale of the Federal Ministry of Education or Federal Salary Scale,” the senior government official said.

I hope the Teachers of staff schools of Federal colleges of Education are also included in this arrangement/agreement because they (Teachers of Federal colleges staff schools)were also laid off from Federal govt pay roll by the same directive that affected Teachers University staff school

You have to remember that majority of the primary school teachers in university staff schools are spouses of lecturers, especially the professors. They are protecting the interest of their families, especially their wives. It's all about the money. Why should primary school teachers be paid the same salary as lecturers who teach, research and do administrative work?

This a fresh demand because the staff schools teachers were under the federal govt pay roll as at 2009 until Buhari came to power and gave a directive through federal ministry of education that staff schools teachers should be removed from the federal institutions pay roll thereby turning them to private schools teachers

….WHILE WAITING ON ASUU

I remember being a university student a couple of years back and the news comes to you that ASUU is going on strike. At first you don’t feel perplexed because you have no idea how long it will last and many students even see it as an opportunity to take a rest from the academic rigour. Not until months start counting and it starts getting boring by the day especially for those who go back home. They begin to pray that ASUU should call off the strike. But you could be always sure that it will take at least four months before your prayers get answered; well, I said four month because that’s the shortest ASUU strike I experienced as an undergraduate.
So while this strike is on, you don’t have to sit down there and relax or keep praying that the strike be called off. We both know those people don’t care about the youths. And an Adage says when two elephants fight the ground bears the brunt. Their children are outside the country studying; trying to secure for them a better future, so they don’t care. the best you can do for yourself is to take your life is in your hands. Take the bold step and do something rather than waiting.

Well, I will quickly share few tips with you on what to do while waiting on ASUU.
1. Get Certified.
2. Get an Internship placement
3. Get a vocational Skill.

Let me start with the first, Get Certified; See, certification is the only way out of joblessness and the best time to get certified is now. I’ll tell you why; many certification institutes have discount for students which means you have to take advantage of it; because once you graduate the discount umbrella covers you no more. Secondly, why procrastinate? If you have the means why not do it now instead of getting a new phone. The perfect time is always now, you might never get the same opportunity you have now again. There are a lot of certification you can get; I’ll mention a few; Oil and Gas certifications like General and Advance HSE, NEBOSH and OSHA certifications will make you a prospect. These certifications are very important and they haven take a lot of people out of the labour market. They are relevant in almost any industry or sector and if you think that your course of study will rob you the opportunity to work in your desired industry, well, I have a good news for you; there are oil and gas short courses that will avail you this opportunity.
Another important certification I will mention is I.T certification; you can get a certification in networking or programming while you wait on ASUU. This will not only give you an edge in the labour market it will also make you a potential entrepreneur. Well, I used the word ‘potential’ because not everybody realise this and not everyone have the desire to become entrepreneurs. Getting I.T skills have the highest possibility of making you an entrepreneur. What more can I say? GET CERTIFIED!! CERTIFICATION IS THE WAY!!

Second point is; Getting an Internship placement; this might be a little bit hard in this country especially for those who do not have uncles and aunties in these organisations, but it should stop you from trying. Write a letter to as many of them that you have mapped out and will be willing to work at, send you CV along side, let them know you would be willing to intern in their organisation without getting paid. Of course, you shouldn’t be after the pay now, you should be after the experience and the opportunity that comes with it. Learning comes before earning you are still in your learning stage. And if you have few certifications already, it will boost your CV and increase your chances of getting the internship placement that is why I made the getting certification the chief point.

Well, the third one; Getting a vocation skill is also important especially for those with the entrepreneur mind set. As a lady you might want to get some fashion designing, makeup or catering skills, there are several others though. And as a guy you might want to learn how to fix computers and phones or some computer software skills depending on your passion, you might even try the so-called ‘feminine’ skills I mention earlier or hair dressing. The trend is changing as men are becoming very successful in the line of businesses that was once believed to be feminine. Most women prefer the male touch to female. I bet these skills would certainly help you when you least expect.

A lot has been said about the Federal Government not abiding by an agreement it willingly entered into with ASUU. The government through the Minister of Education has acknowledged that it failed in that aspect and it doing everything to remedy it. What I don't understand is why ASUU, which signed the same agreement in 2009 with the government, is not abiding by the agreement.

Let me quote directly from the 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement signed in January 2009.
Page 19
"Section 3.3 Non-Conditions of Service
(a). Fringe Benefits
...
(ix) Staff Schools
(a) The University shall bear the full capital and recurrent costs of University Staff Primary Schools (as in the May, 29, 1999 Agreement).
(b) The University shall (without recourse to Government) bear the full Capital Cost of University Secondary Schools while parents bear
the full Recurrent Cost (as in the May, 29, 1999 Agreement)."

From what is stated above, it simply says that each University, not the Federal Government, shall pay the salaries of employees of staff primary schools (recurrent costs include wages and salaries of employees). So the question is, why is ASUU now complaining when the government decides to implement what both of them signed?

Thanks2God:
This a fresh demand because the staff schools teachers were under the federal govt pay roll as at 2009 until Buhari came to power and gave a directive through federal ministry of education that staff schools teachers should be removed from the federal institutions pay roll thereby turning them to private schools teachers

The way things are going in the university sector, it will get to a point where the federal government will reduce funding to the universities and allow for increase in tuition fees. The system is not sustainable - it is obvious the government does not have the funds. In the UK, from where we largely adopted our system, more than 70% of funding for the universities comes from tuition fees.
