The oba's influence in Edo is undisputable and thankfully this new Oba deserves every respect he gets, hitherto it was not easy for the common man to get justice at the palace court due to certain corrupt palace chiefs, this new oba doesnt take nonsense and is well aware of the ingoings. The Governor Knelt down for the Oba, Greeting him before he Presented his Programs for the State to him. That is to Show you how Much the Oba is Respected! Yet the Governor is still the Chief executive officer of Edo State! eh! Binis view that thought as heresy lol. Though a military administrator once attempted it when he tried testing who is more powerful btw himself and the oba, the much he suceeded in doing was retrieve his staff of office, strip the oba from his position as chair of Edo traditional ruler's council and suspended his allocation. To the Binis an oba is born not made by man, so the staff of office is just mere formality to them and isnt recognised, what the oba uses is his traditional staff (dont know what it is called in bini but it could be likened to what igbos call ofor), you can see him holding it here.

To the binis, the oba is a godking, you cant appoint an oba, you cant dethrone him, you may succeed in forcing him out of his palace(only the british has) but he would remain oba to all binis and his word would still be law to them. the only way to make an oba is to be born of an oba as eldest son, from birth your journey to the throne would start. you would be separated and taken away from the Oba's palace, have your own attendants, nutured as a crown prince and prepared for the throne, duties would be deegated to you over time. when the time comes you would be initiated into the owebo, much later on the order of the Oba you would be crowned Edaikhen N'Uselu and move into Uselu palace as ruler of uselu, at that stage your final step is coronation as Oba N'edo (Oba of benin) whenever the sitting Oba joins his ancestors.

As far as Benin is concerned even the President no fit change an Oba. forget the glamour, it is not all enjoyment, the benin monarchy is not an easy load to carry, the oba is powerful but as oba you cant just do whatever a normal king somewhere else could. gbam! i am deltan and i corroborate your claim. it is embarrassing. visit akwa ibom or cross rivers and you would wonder if it is the same oil money. the problem is that Delta has never been fortunate with leaders. its house of assembly that us supposed to checkmate its executive is very corrupt, its traditional rulers or lick the asses of politicians.
