I've noticed a lot of people are ready to import but don't know how or where to start. I created this thread to help push people in the right direction. This is aimed that those that would like to import from United Kingdom (UK). I can assist you by:

1) Helping identify the right service for the items you want ship (Air or Sea, Door to Door/Door to Port, courier etc) whilst outlining the advantages and disadvantages.

2) Retrieving quotes from a list of forwarding companies that offer the service you need on your behalf.

3) Being your point of contact for any information you needed in the UK.

**UPDATE: After some conversations, I have noticed another major issue seems to be identifying the right suppliers, hence I will also help in this aspect.

A little about me, I am born and bred in the UK (lived in Nigeria for a short period), not affiliated with any shipping company and just to be clear, will not charge for any of the services provided.

How do I receive my goods in Nigeria? Do I need the service of a clearing agent?

Depends what service you order. In a door to door service, the goods will be cleared and delivered to either your address or the company warehouse. However, for a door to port service for instance, delivery ends at the port so you either clear goods yourself or with the help of a clearing agent.

Are there similar types of Alarms that are already selling in Nigeria? If so, does your product improve on the already existing?

Hi,

Below are some useful tips.

1) Understand the product and market you want to serve. This will lead you to gaining a better understanding of the type of service you need, whether Air or Freight. For example, Sea freight takes approx 3-5 weeks from UK to Nigeria (depends on location of port), this may not be ideal for products that are based on the latest trends which can be seasonal.

2) Is your product, prohibited or restricted by Nigeria Customs. This is where a freight forwarder is useful but you can do a little research yourself. Did you know for instance that used Fridge/Freezers or Footwear are prohibited? Some items may also require the need for you to hold a licence to Import.

3) Quantity and size- Once your import starts to weigh above 80kg or so, sea freight begins to be become more price competitive. Anything lower Freight forwarding Air freight service via courier tends to be favorable. For items weighing below 10kg (documents, small packages), a parcel delivery company will be ideal.

4) Ask if your forwarder offers any type of cargo insurance! and whether this is included in their quote.

5) Any quote you receive for shipping, make sure to ask if this is the final cost. Whether this includes custom clearance/packaging of products/delivery to final point. Some forwarding service may leave some of these steps out to make it look as if they are offering a cheap service in their quote (but you will end up paying for such those services). Aside from this make sure to discuss about what to expect with regards to custom duties, so that you don't get an random cost.

I would advise you to get quotes from a few companies to compare before taking any decision and if possible check for online reviews or testimonials!

I have not seen such alarms in the market. I am sure it's completely a new product.

Have you done any kind of market research on whether people "need" the product rather than what you think they may want. Again I ask, what alarms are currently available and are people using them?

Hi,

You will need to be more specific with your question. There is generally no difference in the process if importing clothes from other items. What you need to watch out for is the Nigeria Custom regulations, where certain textiles and footwear's are either restricted or prohibited from entering the country. A freight forwarder should guide you along this process and explain the necessary duties and documentation expected from both the origin and destination country end. I can help you get started now if you are ready to import goods.

It's interesting that many of you seem to have an idea of the product you want to sell? So what is stopping you? You can never expect to make huge gains if you don't take risk. The key is making sure the risk you take is calculated..

Why not test the market first, advertise the product you want to sell online (Facebook for instance) and see the responses you get, collect e-mail addresses from those interested and collect orders first. Don't sell products you think the market wants, rather focus on what the market needs. At the end of the day the most important thing is to provide value to the customer by solving their need.

Lets use our scenario for example, if I said to those of you interested, that I will ship your goods on your behalf from UK to Nigeria, where all you need to focus on is finding the product you want and it will get delivered to your address with out you needing to do anything else (like a eCommerce portal, Alibaba etc)

I work with the forwarder dealing with the hassle of documentation etc but I charge a 5% commission (processing fee). so if buying your goods and shipping cost you overall N200,000, I get N10,000. Would I be providing you value? I have just solved an issue that is stopping you from making potential profit from your sales. Would you pay for this service?

Re: What Is Stopping You From Importing? *UPDATE: Need help with Suppliers? by afecofrank(m): 6:35pm On Sep 02, 2017
Who is buying alarms nowadays that smartphones are a smile away, let alone key chains? Be careful before you waste your hard-earned money on unnecessary investment. You should ask yourself, in the present economic situation of the country, what does people need? Anyway, if you need more consultation and suggestion, please contact me in China.

Thanks for sharing your concern. So the main issue is the fear of being scammed? Which is understandable. Scammed in what sense may I ask? Buying genuine goods or transportation of these goods? Have you heard of Freight Forwarders that offer procurement services? Where b purchasing and delivery is done for you? I want to help you at least get further in the process and solve such concerns so you can confidently invest and benefit from it.

Hi all,

I see the main issue is "trust" and fear of being scammed and been thinking how this can be solved so that more people can confidently venture forward. I have therefore decided to create a fiverr gig for my services where you would be protected by the rules and regulations of fiverr, so hopefully this will encourage more people.

Below is link to the gig:

The main thing is working on how you would market this product as a "necessity". However, I seriously advise you test the market first before spending a large sum of money importing the product. Like I mentioned earlier, why not create a facebook (fb) page of product. Spend some money on fb advertising and see the type of responses you are getting. The responses you get will determine whether there is gap in the market for your product.

Hi ziziangel

Are you looking at a wholesale level or just a few laptops?

Thank you to those that have made contact. From the conversations I have been having, aside from finding the right logistics service, a lot of you seem stuck in finding the right supplier, if I am correct? I will thus like to assist in this aspect, with sourcing out reliable UK suppliers for items you would like to import. I want to keep this thread mainly about the freight logistics but for those of you that need help in identifying the right supplier. Kindly make contact via my e-mail: info@ogongo.co.uk

Hello Ziziangel,
Are you looking for low end or high end secondhand laptops? You can get better deal from China. Like this high end laptop in China is not bad.HP-8570w Work Station, featuring Intel i7, 8G RAM, 750HDD,etc. Clean and fast. You can also get low end laptops like Duo core, i3, etc all imported from the US and the selling price not bad.

Ok. Noted. To my understanding you are still at a stage of gathering funds? Have you thought about details such as your budget, brand, laptop specifications etc so that we can find products according to what you need or if you want I can send you a list of suppliers where you search through these details yourself.
