Read the article earlier in the week and completely agree with the bolded. This is another reasons why I refuse to countenance the people that were crediting Bag of Beans with 6 assists last year, with 3 coming from corner flickons and I think another two were sideways passes to Pedro and Kante to blast from outside the box.

Nothing in stats is absolute its only a pointer and its the best pointer you can have to judge performance, there are always outliers If you are trying to go granular then you have so much room to do that. You wont get 100% most times

E.g when talking about goal scoring the easiest stat to see in football. How do you differentiate a player who has 4 tap in, a player who miscued 2 shots, played a weak shot but keeper fumbled it and it landed in the net, a player who scored 4 penalty kicks, a player who had to dribble multiple defenders to score 4 goals

Or a keeper who faced 6 weak shots and saved all 100% save rate vs a keeper who saved 2 weak sots and conceded 2 100% chances

Over a season these outliers will even themselves out and the guy who tops goal scoring is the sharpest scorer and the guy who tops assists chart is the most creative

This is one reason why counting ‘assists’ in isolation is not an entirely representative way to assess creativity. The creator is often reliant on the finishing skill of the player receiving the pass.
We also know that not all key passes create the same quality of scoring opportunity, and this should be reflected in how we value them.
