Academics, Politicians, Others Gather In Osun To Discuss Southwest Future by Nobody: 7:05am On Sep 15, 2017
The South-West participation in national governance would be the focus of a one-day conference in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, on Friday.

The confab, organised by the Urban Media Ltd, in conjunction with the Osun State Government, according to a release by the organisers, would be chaired by a former governor of the state, Bisi Akande.

The organisers further said the conference would bring together scholars, journalists, politicians, Labour, human rights activists and other stakeholders, to appraise the journey so far.

Among the lead speakers is Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, public intellectual, former professor of Chemical Engineering at Howard University, USA and pioneer vice chancellor at Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State. He speaks on the first theme: “The South-west in national governance: an appraisal of the first two years”.

Dr. Charles Aina, Director-General of the Osun Office of Economic Development and Partnerships, would speak on the second theme: “From Osun to Abuja: investing in social infrastructure in a recession.” His office runs the schools feeding policy, a programme pioneered by the state but now running as pilot in 14 states, after its national adoption by the Muhammadu Buhari’s presidency.

Sen. Olubunmi Adetunmbi, a Development Economist and Ekiti North senator from 2011-2015, would speak on the third theme: “Federalising political parties to conform with local needs,” a topic, the organizers say, was included to stimulate ideas on how to reform the Nigerian political party system, comatose since the Babangida old breed-new breed experimentation of 1991.

To chair the three panel of discussions at the confab, are Prof. W. Alade Fawole, of the Department of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Mr. Adekanmi Ademiluyi, a former chairman, Editorial Board of Daily Independent Newspaper and Mr. Kayode Komolafe, deputy managing director, ThisDay Newspaper.

The panel discussants are top academics and journalists: Dr. Bisi Olawunmi, Bowen University, Iwo, Dr. Harry Olufunwa, Federal University, Ado-Ekiti, Mr. Sanya Oni, Editorial Page editor, The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Ismail Omipidan, Political Editor, The Sun Newspaper, Dr. Emmanuel Oladesu, Political Editor, The Nation Newspaper and Mr. Sulaiman Salawudeen, the Ekiti Correspondent for New Telegraph Newspapers.

We seriously need to wise up in this country, am not against nor for the confab but the question begging for answer is, is the gathering meant to elevate the standard of living of the commoners or another ploy to enrich their pocket

So Afonjas are now discussing their future after they were given back seats by buhari and his northerners.

Pls............I need to ask this question, is Tinubu still alive, if yes........is he still in dis country? It's unusual for him not have said anything with all that has been going on.

There is no real leaders in Yoruba land of today.

An excellent leader that loved his people and his people love him dearly in return.

I have thoroughly considered what the future of the South West would look like with the exit of the South East and no matter how I look at it I conclude that it is highly dangerous for the South West to remain in a Nigeria without the South East. The exit of the S/East makes the West politically weak and vulnerable. It would make Nigeria predominantly Islamic(no offense to moderate and Yoruba Muslims) and the Christians in the "new" Nigeria would have to settle for being second class citizens. Of course there is not a problem with having more muslims(don't get me wrong at all) but that secularism would go down the drain pretty fast if a strong south can not successfully check the religious excesses of the North.

For example, it took the SW, SE, SS to resist the Child bride bill that was put forward by the North some years ago. We wouldn't be able to have resisted that bill without the SE lawmakers vote. Meaning if SE representatives were absent in Nigeria then that bill would have passed because South West can not have enough rep to pass or stop a bill in the new Nigerian national assembly.

Some Northern states today don't allow alcohol sale or consumption and even destroy it whenever found in the North. I know very well that religious southerners are against alchohol too but are not willing to use the law to enforce people against taking it.

What about the time when MBGN contestants were 'chased' out of Nigeria because they dressed "indecently" and the pageantry event had to hold outside Nigeria.

In a new Nigeria without the SS and SE people like Denrele, Bobrisky, Bisi Alimi could end up in jail(NB: I don't agree with what these guys do. But do they deserve jail? Certainly not)

Yes we are conservative in the South West but do we want a state where people are mandated to do things we see as morally right rather than do them because they believe in doing so.

The values and priorities of the North is very different from that of the South West- though we are deeply godly and very cultural yet we value Liberty and Freedom. I understand that Yoruba Muslims may feel that a nation with the North can work I would tell you otherwise. While the fate of we Yoruba Christians would be worse off in a Nigeria without Igbos the Yoruba Muslims wouldn't fair better either. If you doubt you should ask how the Kwarans are fairing politically in a region called "North Central ". During the Ibadan summit that held some days ago some "foreign" unscrupulous people tried dividing us along religious lines but thanks to smart people who didn't buy into such nonsense. But we would continue to deal with such divide and conquer tactics if we remain in this country without the Igbos.

We all do well to heed the instruction of the great sage, Awolowo who once said there is no way the Yorubas would stay in a Nigeria where the East secedes. We do not have the moral right to stop the SE from aspiring to secede because it doesn't pay us. The SE has the eternal right of self determination. But we can begin to debate our position forthwith. Do we remain with Nigeria where we become the part of the south the North would look on with suspicion or form a nation where the Yoruba race can fully express her Culture, Language and Heritage and put religioitwhere it belongs-out of our constitution.

*** I do hope my comment is not regarded as being islamophobic in any way at all. It is certainly not my intention whatsoever also to create a religious distinction in SW. but when talking about the political future of the SW it is impossible to not talk about our unique religious demography. I would say it again as someone who has Muslim family members that I love all persons of Yoruba ancestry regardless of their religion or lack of it***

when Jesus said it was finished, he meant your ability to reason properly.

Nice point statsocial, but it won't make Nigeria an Islamic states because the SS and middle belt are predominantly Christians

@Statsociall: You don't have to pretend to be 'Islamophobic', considering that you are a product of Covenant university, whose proprietor doubles as a god who slaps demons out of you lot, and is an unapologetic islamophobe. All your talk about 'Yoruba Christian' and 'Yoruba Muslim' gives you off as one of those fifth columnists fixing to weaken Yorubas as a people. Perhaps you are better off lamenting over the fate of Igbo Christians in a Biafra dominated by Igbo Jews who oppress them, or that of igbos of Anglican faith over those of Catholic faith (who refuse to give their children to each other in marriage), or where Enugu indigenes were kicked out of Anambra civil service after state creation split them into two states, or where Imo Catholics reject an Anambra priest preciding over them, rather than worrying about Yorubas who have demonstrated unprecedented religious tolerance among themselves.

You don't have to worry for the SW coz we are already contemplating and working towards securing our own future without the SE or the North. We don't have to force ourselves into any atttache with those hate-mongers.

You people are still shouting Afonja all over the place even while your God kanu is getting hunted like a rat and the rest of you are drinking muddy water and urine. Are you people cursed??

I am also clamouring for a nation without the SE and North. I believe it is unfair to lump the entire south west with North just as it is unfair to lump SW with the SS. The SW is better of on its own.

The purpose of my write up was to reiterate that SW cannot stay in Naija for a plethora of reasons. It is unfortunate you see it as a declaration of allegiance to the east.

But I see as very stupid what many Yorubas are doing on this platform. Our e-conflict with the Igbos as given North even more leverage and dominance. I pray we do not dance to the tune of the demon we are fuelling.

On the issue of me graduating from Covenant uni. It is irrelevant. Not all Covenant uni graduates even like Oyedepo to begin with.

You call me a bigot. But in that same canaanland I convinced not less than 5 other yorubas to vote for a muslim Buhari so I do not see myself as weakening the Yoruba's in any way.

Tinubu is just a wheelbarrow used by Fulanis to collect votes from the south......and be dumped.......afterwards
