It was a nice game with many positives, but somewhere in those skillful display of artistic mastery was a glint of malfunction.

Let me start with deulofeu. I did mention last week that his over reliance on speed was his bane. Someone rightly put it as "bringing epl style into the Spanish game''. The problem with deulofeu's kind of speed is that, a defensive set up that is compact can easily neutralize him. Take the eibar defense for instance, defenders come face to face with you, they don't mark with their side, giving you room to run. No wonder all his attempts to run with the ball ended up at the feet of a defender.

Now barca with all of our footballing wisdom decided to adopt the cut-back mechanism when crossing the ball into the 18-yard box, but the Spanish albino is stubbornly refusing to grasp this simple technique. When coming from the wing, defenders expect you to cross the ball and so they almost always form a deep line in front of the goal post, leaving space behind for master goal poachers to work their magic. This is what deulofeu is still failing to grab.

Semedo was pretty solid but I think there needs to be more communication between him and the DMF. When he joins the attack, busquet should be made to sit back as a make-shift RB. Most of the eibar attacks where coming from spaces left when semedo joined the attack. I do hope this is addressed before we meet a team like Madrid that relies heavily on wing play.

Finally, we should learn to deal better with crosses. Most of the attempts eibar made at goal were through crosses. I don't know if it was the absence of Umtiti but our central defenders were finding it difficult to deal with those balls. I fear to think what might happen if we meet a team with a striker that is good on the air.

I for one never thought or expressed that he was a bad player, because I saw what he did at Corinthians and at the Confederations Cup. My only gripe was that he is already 29 and would not last very long.

It's a good thing that you have now seen potential in Paulinho. He is formidable, a fine marker, can get dirty in order to get the job done, and what he lacks in vision he more than makes up for it by being a midfielder who scores. Dare I say that Paulinho could be our very own Frank Lampard. Now if only we had Coutinho in that AMF role. Darn! We would have been indestructible.

Although far-fetched, I think it must be because they are both South Americans and their understanding of football is quite similar. South Americans play very distinctly from Europeans. That sort of synergy can almost never exist say, for example, between Messi and James Milner.
