Is Blocking The Federal Roads On Fridays For Jumat Prayer Acceptable? by YOLO1(op): 1:14pm On Sep 22, 2017
Not asking this to cause religious divide here but want to know the views of people especially our Muslims brothers here on their views about blocking federal highway every Friday for prayer.
Work has taken me to almost all the northern states over the last five years and most times I travel back on Fridays. But it is always annoying to me as a non Muslim to meet a road block due to some people using the express way as a praying ground. This gets more painful when you still have much distance to cover.
This does not happen only in the North. In the southwest, I stay close to Sabo. And this happens also every Friday.
Is this praying style acceptable or should be abolished?
Over to you my Muslim friends

that idea should not be welcome in a secular state like Nigeria.... no one is above the law.... .i also wonder why is Arabic written on our naira note and no one has question it..... I think Muslim enjoy more political freedom more than any faith in Nigeria . isn't this partiality?

in Muslim world it can be accepted, but in a democratic country like ours it should be rejected.

What solution do you propose if it is 'abolished'? Or what do you think will happen? Muslims will look in, see the mosque full and go back home? Lol.

The phenomenon is a result of bad planning by the government. If proper allowance was made for the growing Muslim populations, they will have no need to block the roads.

When I am passing Ibadan-Lagos expressway during one of the RCCG programmes, I only blame the government for approving a building plan without asking the proper questions, like what facilities are put in place for traffic control, what number of people are expected etc. I do not blame the RCCG itself for seizing the opportunity due to an inefficient system. We frustrated passers by just adapt.

Before approving Jumat mosques, the government should ask similar questions. They don't, and I don't blame the mosque authorities either. The worshippers cannot also be blamed. They must pray. The passersby should adapt.

The only other option is more efficient town planning systems for approval for public places, taking religious sensibilities into consideration, rather than the size of the brown envelope presented. Every day, Monday-Friday, it takes me close to half an hour to cover about a 100 metres of tarred road, simply because approval was given to a school to build directly on the road with no parking lot whatsoever, creating a huge traffic jam out of the estate area. The school could never smell approval in the UK or the US for example. My solution?
I learnt to leave early.

You get my point. Cheers.

i love your observation..... so true, proper planning are not done in Nigeria enough before lands certificate of occupancy are awarded..... but not so quickly....by planning, central mosque are located within the major center of the market that most be close to the king palace.. go to idi ape in Ilorin.... it is located in the market very close to the palace likewise oja oba in Oshogbo, what about kasoa Benji in kaduna ..... so many examples I can give.....there was a reported news sometimes last year that ondo state governor wanted to destroy the central mosque located at the heart of the city in akure to make way for motors and relax traffics but the Muslim of the city protested...and the government had to cancel the project...

if the federal govt decided to act like their western counterparts like that of UK and USA you made mention, Nigeria Muslim will protest and the idea will be defeated...... what I suggest to be done is for the Muslim council to issue a fatwa concerning the development since the ulamas voice are much more respected in Islamic settings....

A fatwa declaring what? Fatwas are rulings based on Islamic law derived from Islamic sources. Which verse or hadith will permit a fatwa preventing Muslims from performing Jumaat prayer? Jumat prayer is obligatory on Muslims and this is not negotiable. Rather, the government should take into account the population of Muslims in every location and provide more permits to accomodate the growing need for mosques, in the same way that a highway is expanded when the traffic increases.
The reason why they do not pritest in the US or the UK is because the government takes into account the facts and figures before they grant the permit, not after. The Ondo State example you cited planned to destroy an existing mosque without any alternative whatsoever. If anything, that would have made the problem of praying in the streets of that location worse, not better, as the Muslims would have had to shift to smaller mosques in the area, and more streets would have been blocked... just another example of improper planning and shallow analysis.

A fatwa base on Islamic jurisprudence that will declare how a Muslim should behave or conduct themselves in a secular state like Nigeria.....the land is not meant for Muslim alone and whatever is the development in Islamic gathering here in Nigeria ,non Muslim aspect needs to be consider....

No one is stopping you from praying your congregation prayer, it become a problem when it violate the freedom of others.....everyone aren't Muslim ....

I repeat again, if federal govt should act like UK or USA Nigeria will boil.... the system is difference.... there is too much sensitivity toward religion in Nigeria unlike those country where human right lead the topic of discussion.....

ondo state govt proposed an alternative ground for a new mosque but the Muslims in the city especially the chief imam rejected the idea.... one of the reasons he gave is ....my father was buried in the mosque building...

I ask you ....why is it necessary for mosque to be situated in busy area like market?

my suggestion is very reliable...
