babyfaceafrica:I needn't be in US to know that. If your see their movies and read books written by Americans you'll understand how their educational system works. The guy thinks he's talking to JJCs. I've SAT, GCSE and TOEFL past questions at home my brothers used. Going through those books made me understand that the Nigerian Educational curriculum is more complicated than theirs and that's why a Guru in Nigeria would go over there and come out in flying colours 'cause their teaching is less complicated. |

kimbraa: How can that question be meant for high school. Have you taken your time to check the literature some of these pupils read and are able to understand? What really is your problem with the question? The words or the difficulty of getting an answer to it? 1 Like |

kidman96: Oga, you tried small, but goofed. You are right when you say parents need to be involved in their child's learning process. However, you don't teach a primary one pupil good virtue and goal setting by asking him to write and explain in this manner. You teach them such principles through practical examples and play acting. You teach them using stories that depicts such character traits. You're right that Nigerian educational system is backward though. We're still stuck on old teaching methods. Pour out plenty notes and make kids cram. Go and read about preschool and primary school education in Finland and some other Scandinavian countries. They don't even give homework to kids at this level. Just yesterday, I was reading about how some schools in the US were modifying the school environment to take teaching out of the conventional classrooms by converting hallways, stairwells and so on to areas of learning. Here in Nigeria, most private schools have scrapped primary 6 and developed this "ahead by one" system where they teach kids stuff that is one year ahead of the curriculum. I have a child in primary 2 who is already using primary 3 textbooks. Where are we hurrying them off to? I had to download the US and UK primary school curriculum to compare. Private schools here are teaching way ahead of both countries. Our classes are not age appropriate. Then they will still ask you to pay for after school lessons. Keeping a 5-6 year old in school from 8am till 5pm. To teach what? 2 Likes |

kimbraa: you just love being ignorant don't you I never said I was shocked I said I admired her. there's a difference, pick up a dictionary. secondly your logic is flawed, not everyone communicates with their kids in native dialect, my parents never spoke to me In their native dialect because they were from different tribes and so my sister and I were always spoken to in English. so stop supporting a child not being able to speak well by saying English is not his/her first language. A child in the us is also taught English same way(i don't mean same curriculum before you get confused) we are taught English here. They are taught vocabularies, how to properly pronounce words and language building, some schools even teach Spanish and French. It is because they are taught in school that is why they speak better with vocabularies and the rest not because English is their first language as you wrongly assume. let me take blacks for example, if you hear a black American that isn't educated talk you won't be able to comprehend, they use thangs, thots, yer missus and other words, they don't speak proper English. I'm not surprised anyway at your lack of knowledge and extreme ignorance, most Nigerian women are dull or at best average thinkers. 1 Like |

LordOfNaira:Do all the academic guru you know come out in flying colours in your country?. Someone that's meant to graduate with a first class is deliberately made to graduate with a first class lower. Nepotism/bribery strives in Naija. |

collinsebuka: Have you really bothered to find out why her vocabulary is expansive? I can tell you it is not by doing homework like this. I have a 6 year old who's vocabulary and range of words amaze me. She learnt most of it by watching Disney Junior. This is grade one curriculum in the US: Overview of First Grade Learning Milestones First grade is a year of highly visible progress in reading and language arts. The four major milestones in first grade reading and language arts are: Knowing the names and sounds of all the consonants and vowels Understanding phonics concepts such as consonant combinations Following along, reading, and summarizing simple stories with pictures Developing an understanding of composition First grade is also a year of exploration and discovery of the numbers in the world around us. Five major milestones for first grade math include: Counting to 100 by 1’s and skip counting Knowing the addition math facts Adding and subtracting small numbers Understanding the value of money Knowing the units for measurement, time, and weightKnowing the names and sounds of all the consonants and vowels. https://www.time4learning.com/education/first_grade.shtml Most of this my daughter was learning in Nursery 1. In primary 1, she was already counting to 1000, and having homework to write from 100-200, 201 - 400 and so on. They already learnt how to add up in hundred, tens and units in primary one. 1 Like |

collinsebuka:I give up on exchanging words with you, you know why?. You just played the gender card. You think that because you're a guy then you have superior knowledge, on a field you lack basic knowledge. You didn't even know your first language wasn't English. My dear, go argue this shìt with your girlfriend, not me. |

kimbraa:I have been following your arguments closely as in the guy thinks that a student of primary school primary 1 to be exact knows the meaning of "virtue" and "goal setting", does he even know how students in the primary 1 age bracket talk and reason talk less of having the ability to say that yes this is their goal in life. I think his niece is a genius if she can solve this homework obviously, the second coming of Shakespeare. 1 Like |

kimbraa: But nepotism and bribery are not a part of our curriculum so why blame our curriculum? Also, you seemed to be one of those who feel a curriculum should never be revised. If primary 1 pupils only did ABC years ago, should it mean that it should be the standard forever. If our curriculum finds this question too difficult for a Primary 1 pupil, then there is a problem. These words are no different from the words I find in many Lantern books recommended for primary 1 pupils. With my level of experience in psychology, I have come to notice that kids of today do not like to be talked down at. Tell a child that "Exhibit means to show" and you may hear him/her grumble and tell you, "But I know. I am not a baby". Also, check the cartoons that are shown today and you will notice that children are being prepared to expand their vocabs. I still don't see anything wrong with that question, though. 1 Like |

mrMeen:Lol, even the 9 years old in my compound in primary 4 can't answer the question. He kept screaming I'm ignorant but no one wins such argument. Cc: collinsebuka, is it the illiteracy rate in Nigeria that's 65-75 million as at this year that is your yardstick for saying your parents thought you English from birth. Who compares a fraction of the English speaking elite to the majority of illiterates?. It's only you!. 1 Like |

Re: See Assignment Given To A Primary 1 Pupil by Nobody: 11:02am On Sep 23, 2017 |
LordOfNaira:There's everything wrong with the question. First and foremost; what's the IQ of the average primary1 pupil?, what percentage of children in primary1 could read fluently, write and summarise passages?. The answer to this question is either none or a fraction. When I say a fraction, I'm now making reference to kids from very solid academic background that perhaps in primary one he/she is already reading fluently and writing. This question is tantamount to giving a primary one pupil an Algebraic equation to solve. Where will the child start from?. Let kids grow as kids, and at the right age teach them what they should know. 1 Like |

Evaberry: I see now why the educational system in Nigeria is completely phucked up. It is not that the system is bad. It is because you all don't know what is expected and what the standard is. What rubbish are you spewing? That nonsensical homework is out of the range of a primary 1 pupil. A primary 1 pupil should be focused on Arithmetic, and A, B, C's. Not essays. And how many primary 1 pupils do you know that have full grasp of that kind of grammar? I don't know which USA curriculum you are talking about but it is definitely not the USA i know. Na wa for una i swear. |
