grin, simple question i asked only 1 person answered (ajax 96),.

Una comments dey crack me up, cheesy some nostalgic references made is jus so amusing. wink

Did any of you watch FULL LEAGUE season before Y2K?

What do you mean by watch Full leagues? Well for me. we no get cable so na only from my friend house I dey go watch

94/95 I watched about half of Ajax games either live or the highlights.

EPL it was because of Nigerian guys like Amokachie in Everton under Joe Royle and later Babayaro that made me watch some games

96 I watched mainly Serie A. In 96, 97 98 the era Taribo and Ronaldo were in Inter I watched at least half of Inter and Juventus matches in the league

In 1997 Madrid The Capello Madrid. Where Pannuci, Carlos, Hierro, Seedorf, Raul, Amavisca, Karembeu, Bodo Illgner. I watched half of their games

From 93, I followed Bundesliga based on highlights alone, It was until 97 that I was able to watch many Bundesliga full lenght games live

In those days you are lucky yo get compressed highlights for like 30mins of each league, then watch football Americas to see South American clubs like U Catolica, Colocolo, Gremio, Corinthians

Most of the other knowledge of football was from reading Complete football and ISR(International Soccer Review) later world soccer magazines

Probably not is the answer. The focus is overwhelmingly on international footy cos you could only really get weekly highlight shows in those days, with maybe one or two live league or UCL matches a week.

Then Larry Izamoje on Raypower 101.5fm will fill you in on Milo world of sports every morning about what was happening with Zamelek of Egypt or maybe FC Zuuuuuurick as he used to call it.

I think it was mostly Italian footy that people used to follow those days due the weekly italia show. My own brother whos in the same age group was first an A.C. Milan fan, then a Leicester fan, and finally Chelsea. The latter two only happened after travelling to UK.

Was that the same tournament Oladimeji and Chris Ohenhen played?

There was this song they used to sing:

Oladimeji, he's a skilla
He pass the ball to Osando
Osando pass to Ohenhen
Ohenhen put inside the net
Ohenhen, put the ball oh, inside the net

For Saudi 89, much was expected from Phillip Osondu but he didnt deliver. It was Chris Ohenhen, Chris Nwosu, Mutiu, Sam Elijah that bailed us out. Ohenhen was our freekick specialist, he scored I think 3 freekicks in the tournament.

We had one defender then Mike Onyemachara. Anyone wey no sabi play na Onyemachara we dey call am

Don't forget Complete Sports abi Complete Football. I believe it was N50.

You have not followed football in the 1990s if you did not buy Complete Sports magazine. I can forego lunch for a whole week just to buy that magazine.

I am sure the owner of that magazine never conducted those interviews, just probably ripped them off foreign newspapers. He made a killing boy. My first ever copy was before World Cup 1994 either the one they were talking about how Ruud Gullit has been banished from the Dutch team, or the one where Romario was giving interview saying this would be his last World Cup as he would be 32 by France 1998. That magazine dey trip me then ehn.

Why did none of these guys make National team except Headmaster? I believe Chris Ohen had a decent career in Spain. I used to see him on Championship Manager as late as 1998.

Another guy who is probably Naijas 2nd best AM of all time was Oruma, but injuries and Okocha stunted his Eagles career, though he resurfaced quite strongly in the 2000s with Marseille and sometimes with Eagles. That guy was too talented jor. I even naturally like his style of play compared to Okochas riskier style. He was a very European style of playmaker, low risk, but great passing.

Another dribbler extraordinaire was James Obiorah. He was the star of Qatar 1995 but that team phucked up his profile by going out in Quarter final.

My first memory was Canada 87 final vs USSR, My mom wanted me to go sleep because it was late at night na popsie say make dem leave me. I am sure they all regretted it because na cry I cry till morning after USSR beat us on penalties and referee robbed us.

Nations cup I didnt miss any from Maroc 88, FA cup of the days of John Fashanu Wimbledon and Bruce Grobbelaar Liverpool, Then Serie A, Then football made in Germany was popular in Lagos then that was when I started supporting Bayern but as with youths of those days I still supported Ajax because of the Naija connection.

The only nigerian Atlanta 96 player I can vouch for that did not do football age is celestine babayaro! He grew up playing soccer around us in sardauna crescent back in kd as kids, his talent was why one wealthy mallam who had plans on hammering in soccer via him adopted him and his brothers hence the name babayaro( for an Igbo boy)!

Cele used to hit jos back in the days from chelsea and host boys...na party and bullshit master! I can't count how many times I've boozed with the nigga and his bros! His late younger bro Ken was my guy in u.j... his older bro Emmanuel the keeper/actor and another one called uche na my guys for abuja ( all na kd connects)... Cele is about 38 now! All those other guys like kanu, amokachi and okocha should all be smooching 50 or 50 something by now...but when you meet them up close the good life they live causes them do look younger than you! But they are all grand pa's!

I no remember any of those other stuffs tho. Mexico vs Argentina was the only match i remember watching.

As for the Nepa stunt, that one no be new thing. Happened in Nigeria 2009 as well in one of the matches in Kano. Blackout lasted for like 10 mins.

I've met a few. Know one as a guy of a guy.

Waka pass a lot more. There was a time I saw Okocha thrice in one day - at the football field at Airforce base Ikeja, then at the Tennis court at Sheraton Ikeja, and then at MMA that night
