Varieties they say is the spice of life and with the announcement of TSTV entrance into the Nigerian digitally broadcasting space which has been bullied, monopolized and shortchanged by a particular provider. The announcement of TSTV came as a sign of relief. Sighs of relieve has heaved and subscription suspended ,while Nigerians await for the “pay per view ” Messiah which a popular provider made us to understand that Nigeria isn’t ripe and matured for PPV. Like many Nigerians, I am excited at the impending launch, on October 2, of TStv, a new satellite TV which is set to challenge the monopoly and arrogance of South Africa based Multichoice, owners of Dstv. A brief description of TSTv shows that “it is a DTH pay TV, and will be offering 200 rich blend of local and international channels and packages for entertainment, including news, sports, kids, health, etc. These will be distributed on the ABS 3A Africa beam, located at 3 degrees west, beginning with 100 channels. The TV will also show live sports like Premier League, UEFA Champions League, Europa League and so much more. Some sport channels on TStv Africa are Sport 1-10, Fox Sport HD, and Ts Sports. Running on 4.5G network, every subscriber will get 20G of data for N3,000 monthly. Another thing that is making Nigeria whet and wait is the WiFi options available…the TSTV is coming with a disrupting technology that would bring convergence of broadcasting and communication to Nigeria. The thin line between broadcasting and communication regulations are getting blurred daily and TSTV has demonstrated that. The data can also be used for video calls conferences with camera and WiFi. The TStv decoder will have 50GB hard disk to record TV programmes and a pause/play function. This is one selling strategy that would ensure internet penetration. With the issue of “last mile ” on the lips of regulators and also driving internet penetration, TSTV sounds appealing and attracting to Nigerians . Homes would be connected and the issue of ” TV white spaces” and internet penetration laid to rest, at least for now. Bright Echefu, Managing Director of TStv, during the signing of the multi-transponder agreement with their ABS partner, said their services would offer viewers the experience of HD and SD video, internet services, broadband, TV and radio, at a very affordable rate”. I hope it won’t go the way of HiTv, which owners made so much noise and fizzled out before we knew it. As for DStv, anybody who can break it’s monopoly and save us from their arrogance is most welcome. Just like a man that is anticipating his new bride, said are Nigerians waiting including me. I can’t wait for the launch of TStv, especially it’s pay-as-you-watch option. Multichoice DStv told us this is not possible. Just like it’s sister, MTN, told us per second billing was not possible until Otunba Mike Adenuga launched Glo and all that changed. The era of not having control on what we watch, how we watch and when we watch is gone, hopefully. TSTV would be shifting the paradigm to a customer centric business model. With the level and amount of subscription which is far cry from their competitors like StarTimes and DSTV, having majority market share is a question of time and TSTV is eyeing that spot. Another change is in the offing. Let’s hope it’s the real change. Welcome, TStv. https://etimes.com.ng/paradigm-shift/
