Gabriel Adigwe, a FIFA badged referee in the NPL, at the weekend, was at the receiving end of a lynch by fans of Kano Pillars as they played out a 1-1 draw against visiting Dolphins FC.
Fans of KP began to attack the refrees in the 71st minute and the game had to be stopped for four minutes as the match officials were being hit with sachet water.
Adigwe, sensing that there will be trouble if the game ends in Dolphins favour, decided to award KP a penalty in the 97th minute in what appeared to be a 50/50 challenge which KP later converted.
Adigwe and the other match officials were later attacked as they made their way into the tunnel. They were severely beaten and the 2nd assistant was left unconscious.
Adigwe speaking on Top sports on Top radio this morning, spoke about how he is seriously considering quitting.
Adigwe on March 22nd, was also attacked by fans of Niger Tornadoes after they played out a draw against Bayelsa United in Minna where he said he was 'psychologically damaged' after the attack.

Can you please provide a source apart from claiming that you heard it from top fm?

i know for sure that Adigwe was once beaten at the ABA township stadium and not at Niger tornadoes as you posted.

i also didn't hear about any ref being beaten at Kano stadium, but i know there was a match holdup for 20 minutes when fans invaded the stadium.

Kano pillars just dug their own grave, why throw away the competition now that they are so close to snatching away the league title from Enyimba? they are surely going to pay fines and be banished for pitch invasion.

The NPL should come up with better hard hitting punitive measures like points deduction or outright relegation of erring teams. Banishing teams from their grounds or hitting clubs with fines is clearly not enough.
Re: Another Referee Beat Up: What Can We Do To Stop This? by honeric01(mod): 11:29pm On May 24, 2010
the first link stated that players and officials were attacked, but no where does it have it that they were beaten to the point of coma, i always try to match the highlights on supersport and also post match analyst from the local sport analyst, yet to hear, watch or see where they said k. pillars actually beat up the refs to a point (3rd official) of coma, i know for sure that there was pitch invasion, but there was no beating of the refs and players, that's not really true. you just need to watch the highlight (including the interviews granted after the match).

the first link, yea, i remember that incident now, he was truly beaten, i thought he was the ref that got his 2 teeth removed by enyimba months ago grin

i just can't wait to see the new npl boss stamping out violence in our league, i want to see at least 10 points deduction from any erring team's points, that alone would make any club think twice.
Re: Another Referee Beat Up: What Can We Do To Stop This? by medjai(op): 12:11am On May 25, 2010
yeah, the kickoff link didnt really elaborate cos it happened after the game, they were already heading for the tunnel. Adigwe called in on Top sports on Top radio and explained everything. He said he is considering quitting. He also said the NPL ordered Niger Tornadoes to compensate for the Minna incident but he hasnt been given a dime.
I think this is one area where Obasekis administration truly didnt do enough. It is becoming to common. Away teams go into games and play to lose so they come out alive. When last did an away team win a game in the NPL? This one problem Owumi and his people should really tackle head on. Points deduction or relegation to national division 1 or 10 million naira fine. They'll behave themselves by then.

Kano Pillars have been banished to the UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar following their attack on match officials after the 1-1 draw against Dolphins. Kano Pillars were fined 1.8 million naira. They are to pay 1 million to the NPL and 200,000 naira each to the four match officials.

Premier League sanctions Pillars

The Nigeria Premier League (NPL) have ordered Premier division club, Kano Pillars to play their remaining home matches of the 2009-10 season at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar in the aftermath of last weekend's encounter against Dolphins, which was characterised by acts of violence on the part of Pillars fans.

The encounter, played before a capacity crowd at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano saw the home side drawing level with the visitors from Port Harcourt very late in stoppage time to bring the score line to 1-1. But shortly afterwards, frustrated Pillars fans went on a rampage, attacking the match officials, as well as players and officials of Dolphins.

Sanctions

While Dolphins' players and officials were attacked on the pitch, the centre referee, Gabriel Adigwe and other match officials were attacked inside the tunnel as they headed for the changing room. It is the second time Adigwe will be assaulted by fans this year. Fans of Niger Tonadoes had attacked him in March during a match against Bayelsa United.

In addition to playing their remaining home games away from Kano, the Premier League also imposed a fine of one million naira on the club while also ordering them to pay the sum of two hundred thousand naira to of the match officials (the centre referee Adigwe, his two assistant referees and the match commissioner).

The Premier League also directed the former league champions to effect the payments on or before June 5, 2010, and to identify the perpetrators of the ugly incident.

The decision will likely please officials of Dolphins whose media officer, China Acheru was thankful that they survived the incident. "We thank God we came out with our lives intact even though some of us will live with the trauma of that incident for a long time," he said.

Not the first time

It is not the first time this season that the NPL will be coming down hard on clubs owing to the action of their supporters as the likes of Niger Tornadoes, Rangers, Wikki Tourists and lately Ranchers Bees have all come under the NPL's hammer.

Ranchers Bees were probably hit the hardest as three of their players and two officials were each banned for one year after they attacked centre referee Francis Kreki and match commissioner John Ladan at the end of their league encounter against Sunshine Stars at the Kaduna Township Stadium earlier this month.

In addition to the punishment, the club was fined two million naira and ordered to play their remaining home games in Calabar, at the U.J. Esuene.

That's exactly what I had been saying all along. NPL is wrongly administered, how can such barbaric act continue to happen in our league without proper sanctions. What would have happened if those officials were beaten to death? It would have become another of such stories in the newspaper, NPL would have fined them and that is all.

All this shit, and somebody in my office ask me to stop supporting europian clubs and go to watch the league in the stadium in Nigeria or become a fan of a Nigeria club. Tufia, !!! No be me.

i was listening to all these tv soccer analysts one day and one of them said, in every game, the team playing home has the responsibilities of accommondating, feeding and transporting the match officials.
if that is true, how can a team do all these and still loose a match? the ref at least must learn to appreciate and give one or two penalties to the home team depending on the kind of services given to the ref by the team.

that was about 2 years ago, no longer in existence, it's nff that pays the refs now.

How to stop it?  huh

When anyone that is not suppose to be on the pitch or near the tunnel starts approaching it after or during a game, as they approach viciously and angrily, deliver a bout of hot lead travelling at high velocity with immense kinetic energy into their dimwitted skulls. Simple.

Shoooooot them! Nigerians mostly behave like animals, treat them like animals and somehow they become sane most times.

By the time it is customary that you are liable to be shot for attempted murder for "trying" to attack a referee, the quicker the common sense to realise you are not at liberty to attack anyone. SHOOT THEM!

And anyone identified by a competent official of threatening from the stand should be brutally removed by a team of about 40 MOPOL immediately from the stands and taken to a barracks. Anyone that tries to stop/prevent removal should be taken along. I personally will not raise a voice if they have to use wheelchair and be fed with straws for the rest of their lives after they live the barracks.

Lets do this for 2 years and you will see how it will stop instantly, and then hike the gate fees, so only mostly respectable people and their families can attend. Not agberos from the street.

Unrealistic suggestions, even in south American countries where violence is a norm when it comes to club football, they don't have strict and barbaric conditions like these. you can hike the gate fee and barricade the stands from the main stadium, but to shoot at sight is the worse you have ever said so far in your NL history.

grin grin grin grin grin

I am obviously joking.

That is just my quixotic vision based on anger. FIFA and CAF would never even look down favourably on that.

What jurisprudence would they have to shoot anyone coming on the pitch? Can they prove he is actually going to strike the referee or just unleash verbal rant?

It was a crazy joke showing my lunatic side.  cheesy

But it would be nice if they could do it sha.

Population reduction is something I want in Naija. Shoot them.  cheesy

^^^Nigeria will face FIFA's wrath if they do this but CAF, CAF will give a thumbs up and urge us to continue
Re: Another Referee Beat Up: What Can We Do To Stop This? by honeric01(mod): 5:04pm On May 28, 2010
@sagamite

If u want to reduce the population, there are other ways of doing that without sheding of blood, one's to put an embargo on how many kids you're allowed to have as a married citizen and when you should marry or get pregnant if you are unmarried.
Anyways, let npl introduce huge points deduction technic, you'd see the sudden effect it'll have on the league.

Each stadium should have a lion cage. Anyone threatening the referee should be grabbed and thrown in in view of the crowd, and then you will see how fast people will have manners in stadia. angry

maybe you want only lions left in the stadium, the players can as well entertain only the lions because no sane Nigerian would go to a stadium where lions are used as security guards grin grin grin
